That would be great! Let me see how my trip today goes. If there isn't a local sample and I don't end up going with one of my other choices today, I'll PM you.

I agree with ScottyB, that carpet can be too much of a focal point in a theater room. Sometimes the wild carpets give the "theater look", but then if you think about it, the wild carpets in a commercial theater are in the foyer and sometimes down the isles, but not in the seating area or in front of the stage and screen. Many of the wild patterns will reflect the light and make the movie experience less than what it could be. I suggest a medium pattern out of the categories of "wild, medium, and mild".

In your case, my feeling is toward a burgundy with a medium, fun pattern.

Sherwin Williams has a whole color chip card devoted to 'black'. There are like 8 choices.

I'm trying to get a feel for the price ranges I'd be looking at.

I have the same carpet as Jamis, and it was around 2k to have it and new padding installed in my theater. The room is 12'6" x 18'.

It picks up that trim color in the soffit a little bit and spreads it around the room. Actually I like a carpet I've seen black with stars.

I think bmackrell has it I'll go look.

The movie inspired carpet is fun, but I think it might be a little busy. I tend to agree with some of the other posters about some geometric pattern of some sort.

I ended up getting this:
http://www.couristan.com/cms.aspx?Gu...e-7412f8081bfe

But, the web sample makes it look pretty lame to me. It actually looks pretty cool in person. Nice and dark with a pattern and texture (plus very soft and squishy for the feet).

Good luck with your decision!

Successful trip! I've got a choice I'm comfortable with.

I visited 6 different places (on top of two yesterday). The suggestions from here really helped me narrow my search.

I didn't find anything I liked at Home Depot or Lowes that compared to the suggestions I like from this forum.

I found an area rug of the Nourisan Cosmopolitan Celestial at the first dedicated carpet place I went to. Unfortunately, the 'Black' one looks pretty 'cool' (it's a dark gray that leans bluish). The Red is interesting, though, and goes reasonably well with my GOM.

At the last store (CDC Carpets and Interiors, a local store). They had large samples of black and red Celestial, the Masland Quadrate, and the Couristan Miami (Marco Island).

I brought them all home, and I like the Marco Island:

My only concern with it was that the pattern might be too eye catching. Looking at it in the theater with realistic lighting (not full daylight, not bright flash), the tan highlights are actually quite muted. It looks great. My wife likes it.

We also like the Nouristan star carpet, but it was going to be $123/yard (installed with good pad). It's wool. The Marco Island/Miami has a better black, and is going to be closer to $50/yard installed with good pad.

The Masland Quadrate (times square) is my other holdout possibility. It's a tad cheaper ($45/sqyd installed), a bit less soft, but it will likely wear better. My sample is so small it's hard to get a feel for how it will look. Big Mouth's is gray (Union Square), although I'm looking at pictures of the black in Sandman's thread...

But I've got it narrowed WAY down to two reasonably priced carpets, both available locally, and I would be happy with either of them.

You guys have been an amazing help!

I really do like that (original idea) carpet!

But not on the stage riser. Black is thoroughly boring, except on the stage riser.

It's probably too late, but my advice is don't give in to peer pressure.

If it's a truly dedicated room, in an out of the way part of the house, go with whatever you like. If you're worried about resale value, make it easy to change by putting in a solid color border, so the "wild" carpet is just a simple rectangle that can be easily replaced with whatever neutral color is in fashion at the time.

I really don't want to offend anyone's choice, but over the last several years I've noticed a trend for many theaters on AVS to copy the exact same carpet, and wall fabric, and sconces, etc. They all look nice, but new ideas in theaters seem so rare now.

It's not quite too late, I've got carpet measurers coming out tomorrow and Wednesday.

I definitely did not cave into peer pressure. Ironically, however, I did pick the same pattern as Big Mouth and Sandman (Masland Quadrate). Essentially, the more I thought about the different carpets (from the wild one, to the Miami above, to the Quadrate) and pictured them in my room, the more I realized that I didn't want a carpet pattern that caught the eye. I wanted understated, dark, neutral.

Unfortunately, that tends to mean dark gray or black without much pattern. None of the examples here supplied that (Big Mouth's got closest, but it was a bit too light for my room). However, I found the 'black' version of Big Mouth's carpet, searched for it in the forum, and hit Sandman's thread. I looked at the pictures there and was sold.

The fact that it was the cheapest of the ones I was looking at was a plus...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found some useful info shopping for carpet today.

Just in case anyone is looking for this carpet Shaw makes one that is exactly the same. The taller diamonds are actually a little softer material but the difference is very small. The Shaw carpet is called Cross Street and the code is Q1792 and they have a ton of different colors including black.

The Lees carpet would cost me about $35 per yard plus pad and install.

The Shaw carpet at a local carpet store was $27.95. I was able to find it for $20 per yard at a distributing center, which is almost 1/2 the price of the Lees carpet. Pad is about $2.50 a yard and install would cost me $4 per yard. My room needs 27 2/3 yards (11'8" x 20' estimate) plus 5 yards of black plush for the stage. My room will cost me about $800 or less which im very happy with. The Lees carpet would have put me over $1,100. I will use the savings toward me theater chairs.

I noticed a lot of stores are selling carpet at the per square foot price now. Take the yard measurements and divide by 9 to get the square foot price if needed. Some people think you divide by three.

Yeah... I have the Lee's version and the carpet store we went through had the Shaw's as well. If it had only been about the feel/texture, we probably would not have paid extra for the Lee's (we preferred the texture of the Lee's). On the flip side, the Lee's version had a more extensive warranty and what seemed to be a much more durable backing.

I don't think Lees Unanimous is available anymore. That was near the top of my list and all I can find after web searches is what seems to be dated pictures. Has anybody tried to get that lately?

Its time to resurrect this thread anyway--I need to make some choices, and I'm pretty torn between some of the options here. I want a pattern but probably basic, and I want it to be soft.

I'm also very partial to some of the Joy Carpet offerings.

Shaw has the large dimond pattern.

Let me add a new consideration,

Something from Lowe's (Bacon Race thread) similar to Masland Quadrate but considerably cheaper.

Big, that is hilarious. The Bacon Race theater is exactly the theater I got my trim inspiration from (although not as nice as his), and I was just trying to find out what that carpet was in his theater.

I was looking hard at Quadrate II also, is that new or just different since you did your theater? In the description, they even say it is good for media rooms.

I know the Shaw is an option, but everybody kept saying it wasn't as nice, so it wasn't going to be my first choice.

Just tried to search lowes.com and they show a whole 3 (THREE) carpet styles, not sure what is up with that. Hopefully I can find more details through searches here if you don't know the brand/style on the Lowe's option...

Ask Damelon in his thread. I looked quickly and didn't spot it.

Here is another picture Damelon posted in the thread, I know he grabbed it online. It shows the texture detail of the carpet. If you print this off and walk in the store, there really is only one style with this pattern.
