Purchase Advice Needed: Samsung LN52A850 vs. LN55A950

I'm trying to decide between getting the LN55A950 and the LN52A850. Comparing the best prices for each that I've seen, the 55" Series-9 is about $1.3K more expensive than the 52" Series-8.

I was hoping to get some advice and/or information that will help me decide if it's worth the $1.3K extra (or even if it isn't, if there's a compelling reason to spend that much more). Could more knowledgeable people than I give me their take on the differences and their "worth"?

Although I don't claim to know a lot about the Samsung models, insofar as I'm aware, the two primary differences between these sets are that the 950 has a slightly larger screen, and, most importantly, an LED backlight with local dimming capability.

Don't know how much you know about the 950's LED backlight/local dimming capability, but the net result is significantly better black levels than any prior LED tv (only rivaled by Sony's new XBR8, which costs a lot more). Are the improved black level performance and an extra 3" of screen size worth the price difference? Only you can decide that.

If you haven't read CNET's review of the 950, I recommend you do so.

I'm in the same boat, but I think at the 1.3k difference I'll remain in the boat, unless something happens with this pricing. I was excited to read about the new Sharp LED LCDs, but with MSRPs of $9,900 for the 52" and $12,500 for the 60", I quickly ran back to looking at Sammy's.

I just hope to see an overall adjustment on the higher end units this year. I have no clue or idea if this will happen or not.

There is a 950 series thread hear with active conversation about the units. (46" and 55").

LED is the big and major difference and therefore commands a higher price.

I think it is worth the extra cost. I am sure you are hoping to get 5-10 years out of this set and to look at the price difference over the long hull that does not add up to much per year for the superior technology.

No question the 55 is a better set keep in mind the extra 3" makes the 55" 12% bigger, so just the size difference should easilly add 12% in extra costs. (see below)

I own a 52850 and very happy with it, I've yet to see the 950 in person so I can't fairly compare.

I have a 55in rptv in the living room and have the 52850 in the spare room for my games. As far as size comparing the 2, I could barely tell the difference in size from 10ft. Playing transformers in hddvd on the 850 is spectacular with lots of pop and deep blacks, $1.300 is a lot of extra dough for 3in and better blacks.

All in all if I had real deep pockets to spare i would take the 950 in a heart beat, but for under 2,500 what I paid for the 850 I am more than happy with my set.

WOW Chris, you've (as a vendor) been around this board for a while now. I remember Cleveland Plasma when I was in the market for a 42" plasma in august of 2005 ( Which is in my bedroom). I'm sure you can give us a deal that we can't resist on the 950 right?

I am also trying to decide between LN46A860/850 and the 950. Having read both forums and basically understand differences, issues etc. and am willing to pay difference for the 950 but a couple of questions: one is how different are they as far as viewing from an angle? Also have concern about 950 blooming. Is there typically less obvious clouding in 950?
Also wondering about the audio quality in 950 (which might not be an issue esp. since most buyers at this level probabally only use external). I typically don't use external speakers (but will be getting external sound system mostly for movies, but not for everyday viewing). I was ready to get the 860 but was concerned when I read that the sound of the 850/860 is not so good due to thin design and possibly lack of built in subwoofer like the 750 (but don't want 750 due to bezel and halo, although some say this has been fixed). For me, thinness doesn't matter as much as good built-in audio (not wall mounting). So I am wondering how sound quality compares between 850/860 and the 950.

Going today to see if I can find a 950 to test drive and compare to 860 but interested in any input as to how people decided between 850/860 and 950? If cost is not an issue is the obvious choice the 950? Thanks!
