For the horizontal masque on top of the screen, I have used a small board that was turned into black Molton. On the back side of the board, the Molton is connected with some cramps to the board.

This construction with the black Molton was connected with a lot of cramps on a beam. And afterwards the beam was screwed above the screen.

Then I have screwed a beam on a small board. This construction was also covered with black Molton and it was placed between the kitchen plate and the screen. It is the horizontal masque at the bottom.

The curtains:

I am not a tailer and can not handle a sewing machine, so I had to find a simple solution for my curtains.

The Molton has out of factory a clear and sewn ending at the top and the bottom. The solution was to use this for the visible side of the curtains and the unclear endings (invisible in the theater) was capsized.

To connect the curtains with the tracks, I have buyed little clips. The clips was clamped on the capsized side of the curtains and afterwards the curtains was connected with the hooks of the clips to the plastic carriers of the tracks.

With this system I have build all my curtains.

On the curtain track nearest to the screen I have hang up two black Molton curtains on the left and the right side. This is the vertical masque for the screen. To give the room a real cinema atmosphere, I have hang up above and on the left and the right side three Molton curtains in blue color. These Molton curtains have the same color I have used for the walls.

To close the cubes and hide the subwoofer, I have build three little wooden frames.
Two of these frames was covered with black Molton. The frame for hiding the subwoofer was covered with acoustic transparent material.

The three frames was screwed on the cubes... and so... the front was finished!
With the black masque curtains on the left and the right side of the screen, I can realise screen ratios between 4:3 and 21:9. The height of the screen is always the same and when a movie in 21:9 is screening, I will zoom the picture with my beamer to the maximum screen dimension.

The Back:

I have planed two seat rows for my theater. The audience seating on the second row should have free look to the screen. So my theater needed a stage for the second row.

The backstage was build from six pallets. Two are on top of each other and three of this construction are next to each other.





After the pallets buidling have found the final position, I have covered it with wooden plates. The dimension of the stage:
  • Width: 4, 2 feet
  • Length: 9, 0 feet
  • Height: 0, 9 feet





Then the building was covered with dark carpet. The carpet is not glued but connected with a lot of cramps to the stage. I wanted to avoid to glue the carpet, because the deconstruction would be very difficult with glued carpet. To use cramps is a good solution and after one and a half year there are no waves in the carpet.




The edges of the stage are hide behind plastic ledges. The leges are nailed to the stage.

After that, I have build a stair from wooden boards. The iron angles on the left and the right side are there to screw the stair to the stage.

  • Width: 1,0 feet
  • Length: 2,5 feet

The left and the right side:

To hide the cable of the rear speaker, I have build two long canals from two boards. One for the right and one for the left side. The both canals are from the ground to the ceiling of the room. After I have cut the boards to the height of the room, I have drilled a hole in the boards, where later the rear speaker will hang up. Then I have covered the two boards with black molton and a simple wooden carrier for the rear speaker was screwed on the boards. Two small wooden ledges between the wall and the board makes place for the speaker cable behind the board. Before I have screwed the canal on the wall, I took the end of the cable out from the drilled hole.




Then the rear speaker was hang up on the canal.
The two rear speaker are in height of 5,9 feet (like the THX recommendation) and in one axle with the ears of the audience in the first seat row.

The Chairs:

I planed five to six original cinema chairs, for maximum comfort each with two arm rests, for my home theater. It is possible to buy cinema seats new, but their are very expensive. So I looked around for used one. After a short search, I have found very cool chairs for low costs on ebay. The chairs are from the french manufacturer Quninette and their are very comfortable (Long movie nights without pain in the back or the butt are no problem.). The problem was that each seat only have one arm rest, but i wanted to have two arm rests for each seat. So I had to buy twelve one. After the seats was delivered, it was necessary to clean them intensivly. Now their are looking like new.

The seating should be flexible and moveable, so I would not screw the seats to the ground. The solution was to screw each seat on a separate heavy wooden plates.




The dimension of the plates:
  • Width: 1,5 feet
  • Length: 1,5 feet
After I have cut the plates, I have covered them with dark carpet and the edges was hide behind plastic ledges. Then the seats was screwed on the plates.



Finally the six seats was placed in two rows.

Other Details:

To become original cinema atmosphere, I have installed four lights in my theater. Each light was screwed on a short beam. The beam was covered with d-c-fix.




All four lights are connected to a dimmer. The dimmer can be activated by a remote control.




For the projector I have build a wooden table. Bevor I have constructed the table, all parts was covered with black foil. To reduce noise from the beamer, I have glue foamy material inside the case.





The table was closed with thin wooden boards. The boards are also covered with black foil.

For the electronic equipment I have buyed a easy rack.




The place under the beamer is to small for a seating person. I have closed this hole with a small table.




To hide the exit of the theater, I have installed a blue Molton curtain. The installation of the curtain is the same I have done for the front.




A theater is not a really theater without a movie poster. So I have placed a movie poster on the right wall nearest to the exit.

And here the story continues:

Optimizing Room Acoustic:

Optimizing room acoustic is a must do for having best sound performance. To optimize the acoustic of a room is not a easy doing. Every room has other acoustic problems and there is no general rule what is to do. In best case you should be adviced from a profi. I am also a rookie, but I spend a lot of time with many tests to optimize the acoustic of my theater and finally I have installed some do-it-yourself acoustic elements which have done the best results in my tests.

First I have filled the front stage with foamy material around the subwoofer.





To minimize roar from the subwoofer and improve dialog reproduction, I have placed two big rolled foamy mattress in the left and the right corner of the front.





Then I have placed a acoustic element on the left wall nearest to the screen. This element eliminates reflections from the wall. Without this element the tendency of the front sound is to the left side.
The element is build from the same foamy material I have used for the front stage. The material was covered with black Molton.




In the back on the right corner I have installed a big acoustic element that also reduces roar from the subwoofer.

Finish:

End of may 2007, after 4 months of building and spending every free minute on my project, the MovieBox theater was finished. This was a hard time and there was some points I thought I will not arrive the goal. But now, when I am looking back, I must say the hole effort is nothing against the big fun now I have with my theater, The picture quality is very good and the sound performance are better than in the local THX-Cinema. But there is one disadvantage: Every evening friends are in front of my house and want to see the newest blockbuster in my theater. Since opening MovieBox, time to relax is very small for me. ;-)
