Lucky me . . . in Oregon there's no sales tax. Although I've made many purchases from J&R over the years, I'm willing to miss out on the $15 from live.com in order to avoid hassle/cost of return shipping on the chance of getting a defective one.

Thanks for the reply. On Onkyos, the default setting for this is off--that is, the unit powers back on with volume where it was, just like your Panasonic does now. I guess I'll read the manual very carefully to see if Panasonic has a similar feature to turn on. If not, this one little detail could kill it for me. Anyone who has heard a tweeter figuratively explode at power-up will find Onkyo's smart-volume feature hard to live without.
