Boy is this thing nice to look at but, for me, hard to set up.
I have a Panasonic Viera 37 inch LCD and the BX500.
The raw cable signal fed directly into the LCD works fine...the LCD's Toslink optical out cable successfully feeds 5.1 to the BX500 and all is well (for the QAM channels).
The premium cable channels are fed to this room via a Linksys media extender and Vista Media Center. The media extender has HDMI out...HDMI from the media extender to the TV's HDMI in...successfully gets video to the TV...and then I presume the Toslink optical audio out from the TV that is connected to optical in on the BX500 moves the 5.1 there.
But I am at a loss to understand it all...from my first Marantz receiver 35 years ago...which I loved setting up...the BX500's manual, combined with the Panny Viera LCD manual...I swear I don't understand what I'm doing...I'm not even certain what questions to ask.
As it stands now, though, I am getting better results from hooking up as much of my gear as I can into the TV (DVD via component, VCR via standard video, Linksys via HDMI) and then asking the TV to send audio only to the BX500 via Toslink.
If I get a BluRay/PS3 and desire lossless audio, thisnew device needs to be connected directly to the BX500, right (to get lossless 7.1), because Toslink is only 5.1 and lossy...correct?
Well, the easiest connections (as in ease of use, as in WAF...hell, as in Me Acceptance Factor...MAF!)...to use with the BX500 involve connecting everything through the TV...then the "TV" setting on the BX500 is simple to work through.
And I am currently having trouble getting audio out of the BX500 that is HDMI in origin...
I am two days into this process now...any and all comments welcome.
