How to measure gain?

Normally the concept of unity gain would mean 100% of the light hitting the screen is reflected, and thus no measurement could be >1..

But in the HT world it seems unity gain is defined as the amount of light reflected by a matte white screen. (which white?) And what effect does a gloss sheen have on gain?

And how can a screen have a gain of 4?! Is it coated with triangular street reflectors?

Is there an objective way to measure gain?

OT: Is Video Essentials the best way to tweak a system? Does it require a light meter? Is there a better way to get color balance?

And this is exactly why gain should be re-labelled directivity. This would be in agreement with conceptually similar phenomena in acoustics, antennae etc. Unfortunately, gain seems to be an established term that is hard to get rid of.
