Iron Man: What do YOU hear?

Since everyone's probably playing Iron Man scenes as much as I am, I thought I'd ask about what you're hearing from your sub during a specific scene:

During the "escape from captivity" scene, there's a shot of the mouth of the cave/tunnel as our intrepid IM v1.0 makes his way out... there's a bunch of bass through here prior to his emergence from the dark.

So I'm curious what you guys with great subs and well-sorted out setups are hearing during this scene. Personally, I'm getting more loud general rumbling than identifiable concussive footsteps. I wonder if I'm missing out?

And if you have other "sub-heavy" moments in IM that might help me evaluate my current setup, I'd love to hear about them... stuff that has that "hit you in the chest" quality. Thanks in advance,

Rich

There are definitely clearly identifiable concussive footsteps, very foreboding. They do build in resonance until he says, "Now, it's my turn." Then what follows is a bass barrage once the flamethrower gets going.

I'll listen to it again and post back too.

Ill check it out too,

One thing I noticed was some bass tones when the metal dungeon door was opened and closed, its kinda annoying... does anyone else hear that? Maybe I have my sub knob up too high.

I 100% agree. Each and every footstep can be picked out. There is a TON of impact with each step and then it is gone for a second until the next step. Once the flames come out the bass just sounds like a flamethrower.

ps...you want a SUB MOMENT....just play the SONIC BOOM scene when he gets pissed and is flying to the middle east. When that sonic boom hits your face should light up!

Hell yeah! That is one of my favorite moments for sure.

OK... I listened to it again a couple times. What is more noticable is the time space between each footstep, then..... the pause. After the firestorm of the flamethrower, what you really notice is when the .50 cal opens up on him. It 'breathes', for lack of a better word.

Very cool.

Curious as to what kind of sub you are running... and what processor or receiver...

I'm running a PS3 decoding the TRUEHD track. It then streams via HDMI the PCM to my Pioneer 1018 Receiver. From there I have the sub output going into my Subwoofer EQ which just tweeks the frequences a bit to get my response flat (within 3db) in my room. The feed then goes to my AMAZING SVS PB-13 which is corner loaded in the front of my room about 10-12ft away from my listening position.

You know what I hear? The neighbor's dogs barking.

I have a big sub.

Yes, there are footsteps.

I have a Pioneer SC-05 (promptly killed my old Advent sub), and I'm presently starting out near the bottom of the pile and auditioning a Klipsch Synergy Sub-12.

After setup and careful listening, I'd say the Klipsch is pretty good. In the "escape" scene mentioned, there's a rough mix of footsteps with resonant rumble building through IM's emergence. The sonic boom is also good. Loudness is easily there; it's the punch that seems average.

So, with that said, neither of these Iron Man scenes really make me say "holy crap" with the Klipsch.

Watched The Hulk on BR, also, and while the LFE was certainly fun I didn't come away with any moments that really impressed me.

You need a new sub.
The Klipsch is only good down to about 30hz. A lot of the really crazy bass parts have high levels of bass way below this (think octaves). Ironman and The Hulk both being examples.

Yah, that's what I'm thinking. Thought the Klipsch was worth a try; certainly a relatively inexpensive sub and easily available at BB/Magnolia.
Yeah it's not bad at all, but it just won't give you that "HOLY CRAP!" feeling.
I have dual mfw-15's iron man will make you piss yourself the first scene when the humvee blows up always scares the crap out of my unsuspecting audience
post #17 of 62
With one Ultra that scene is phenominal! SOon I will get to experience two Ultas, plus that scene on Blu-Ray.

ok how bout the seen when the jericho missile blows up & the wind hits them in the face is there anything there, cause i feel like there should be some kind of LFE there but, i dont get anything.

yup really strong waves of bass. lol
That should be an outstanding setup... sounds like you are not satisfied totally with its performance? The only possible weak link I could see there would be the Pioneer.... not really familiar with that unit, so I cannot say in reality... but that would be my guess as to any weak link... sounds like you should be telling us what we should be hearing as a reference!

EDIT-- also, placement could be an issue... while corner loading a sub increases SPL, it can have an adverse effect on a sub's articulation... gets a bit "boomier, so to speak... try some different positions and then listen again to see if you get any improvements... good luck and have lots of fun with that beast of a sub!

Yeah, I had family over the other day, and the scene in the opening sequence when the Humvee blew up made my sister spit out her drink it was so loud and clear. The steps in the escape scene are clear, loud, and build up to the gun shots. I have one MFW-15, and I can only imagine that 2 would be ridiculous.

I re-listened to that scene. Prior to the emergence of Iron Man out of the dark, there are distict very heavy, rumbly, footsteps, but with a cave-like reverberence. When he steps into the light, the footsteps become clearer and more metallic, like heavy with bit of heavy clanking.

Thanks for giving me a reason to re-watch that scene. Great bass!

That scene particularly has exclusive LFE.1 track that thunders deeply with shuddering almighty low end. When the LFE.1 track is muted it still has small amount over fronts LCR just a bit underwhelming that’s all. Anyway this wasn’t my cup of tea I was almost board to tears with this film.

The score sucked it wasn’t high octave like it was with Spiderman another one of Stan Lee’s comic book hero creations Danny Elfman hits the notes just right. This one impractically didn’t have an opening title score instead I have to listen to lame load junk music, waste of my time this film was.

£16.00 pounds I could have brought something far better and enjoyable for that.

With the PB13 you get hit with a massive pressure wave, I cannot believe how freaking scary that soundtrack is with the right sub. I watched it the first two times with my Pw-2200 and it was good, but with my spanking new shiny 13 its simply insane.

Try twin 15" TC2K ported subs, front firing, front ported....the pressure wave HITS YOU

and I have side 15" sealed subs slamming the 30Hz to 80Hz range!!!!
simple unreal for my guests one of my favorite scenes to play

so i guess i need a pb13? i still think that my sunfire tg-3 is the reason im not happy with my LFE. i noticed other movies were there is 0 LFE , on other systems. dont get me wrong i have great bass but certain seens something is missing.

Most subs are simply not capable of playing low enough with any serious db output, thats where the really good performing subs shine amongst other things.

Very true unless you spend the big $$$ or DIY!

I'll possibly be testing this scene out with dual PB13s this weekend if my second ultra makes it in to town. One sounds great, but two should really rumble. The scene with some real umph is when Iron Man shoots the missle and the shockwave comes over the mountain!
