24p ... when to use it?

Could someone comment on when is the right circumstance to run 24p?

I have made a few attempts with IronMan and Troy BD titles on the following gear, and staying 1080p60 looks the bast. 1080p24 had various degrees of judder on vertical camera moves.

Equipment:

Sony HW10 SXRD projector
Panasonic 55K with forced 24p mode
DVDO Edge

I tried running the 55k direct to the HW10 and through the DVDO Edge, and never achieved a nice looking 24p.

I assume.. 1) the HW10 does not do 24p properly 2) the 55k does not do 24p properly 3) the title I selected had their original 24p cadence replaced during mastering such that 24p can not be resolved 4) something else entirely.

I welcome any comments and please pardon my ignorance.

Use 24p when it gives you less judder.

Is there any info provided on the BD title box which might let one know 24p is the better frame rate to use?

no matter what resolution/framerate you are doing from your scaler always use 1080/24p 4:2:2 from BD players, it is the output with the least amount of work done to the signal, meaning it is a straight decode from the disc and output, no conversions inside the player

all major film releases are 24p, no exceptions, of course there is 1080i stuff out there like concerts nature etc., if you use a player like the new Pioneers set it to source direct output and it will take care of that perfectly

Hi Gary,

I also have a Sony but a Pearl projector. It also has a problem with 24 Hz. I have a DVDO VP 50 and can set the output to 48 Hz. This works very well. It just shows two frames in 1/24 of a second instead of one. I don't know if the Edge will output 48 Hz or not. If it does and the projector will take 1080P50 48 is close enough to lock.

I just checked the Anchor Bay website and the DVDO edge does not output 48 Hz. The VP50 does 24,48 and 72 Hz. Sorry!

Assuming you are referring to the Sony vpl-vw50, there is absolutely no problem with 1080p24 and this projector. It displays this at p96.
