Need help on a set up for my 5.1?

I am pretty new to home audio. I am looking at two different setups for my living room. It is 18x18x15 cathedral. I am about 50/50 listening to music and movies. I have a limited budget but am looking at the two following systems:

System 1:

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K
Front: Polk Audio Monitor 50
Center: Polk CS1
Rear: Polk Audio Monitor 40
Sub: Polk PSW10

System 2:

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K
Front: Polk Audio Monitor 40
Center: Polk CS1
Rear: Polk Audio Monitor 40
Sub: Polk PSW110

Also, what would be comparable speakers that I might need to consider. I only kind of know the Polk brand but am open to suggestions. All of your help is much appreciated.

Two things first:

1) Give us an actual dollar amount for the budget you're wanting to work with;

2) Go and actually listen to other speakers.

Polk isn't bad, per se, but there are many as good or better offerings for the money out there. Quick off the top of my head that you can find in a lot of big box stores are Klipsch, Martin Logan, and Definitive Technology. Also, especially for subs but also speakers, take a look at internet direct, such as SVS, HSU, Outlaw Audio, AV123, and eD, as most of them allow 30-day in-home trials, which can tell you much more about a speaker than listening in a store.

schroedk - Thanks for your reply. My total Budget is $1150 or less for head unit and 5.1 surround speakers with a sub. I have HD Cable, Playstation 3, and DVD Burner/VCR that has HDMI output and a Nintendo Wii, so 3 HDMI and 1 Component for hook up. Also have an Apple Ipod. I am going this Saturday to Best Buy and Circuit City to listen to what they have. All of the brands you mentioned I am not familiar with, but would love some comparisons.

I will give you a little about my listening tastes. I used to work at a car audio store back in the late 90s and have a stereo in my car now. Describing this may help with what I am looking for in my house. I currently have a Samsung HT-X70 HTIB and served its purpose for a while. It is decently loud, but just does not have the sound quality I am looking for.

In my car I have a Kenwood Excelon Head unit. In the front I have Soundstream SPL 5-1/4" components with 1" silk tweeters in the dash. In the back I have Soundstream SPL 4-1/2" coaxials. I have 3 Soundstream Exact 10" subwoofers. I have a Memphis Amp pushing 125 watts by 4 on the midrange and highs, and I have a Memphis Amp pushing 1100 watts bridged at 1 ohm to the subwoofers. The subwoofers are in a sealed box. I used to be into SPL competions, but now I just want high quality sound. I have my Fronts crossed over to 80hrz, the rear at 100hrz and the subs at 80hrz. My car pretty much sounds like you are at a concert and you can feel the music in your chest. I really want that in my house.

Also, In car stereo I was used to certain brands made good amps and certain brands made good speakers. All my speakers in my car are from the same brand. Is this similar in Home Audio?

Also, how does the Pioneer 1018 compare to the ONKYO SR606? And how does the system below compare to the ONKYO HTS9100THX for $900?

Thanks again for your help.

All systems are free shipping and no tax.

System 1 (total = $1080):

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K = $420
Front: Polk Audio Monitor 50 = $240 (pair)
Center: Polk CS1 = $100
Rear: Polk Audio Monitor 40 = $170
Sub: Polk PSW10 = $150

System 2 (total = $1110):

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K = $420
Front: Polk Audio Monitor 40 = $170
Center: Polk CS1 = $100
Rear: Polk Audio Monitor 40 = $170
Sub: Polk PSW110 = $250

You've made a good choice with the Vsx receiver. You've got a pretty large room and music is a big concern here so i suggest you start out with a pair of quality front speakers and a sub for now. Properly placed, a pair of fronts can create an excellent 'phantom' center without the actual speaker. Both subs you've chosen won't be enough in that size room... the cathedral ceilings will soak up a lot of low end. For fronts i suggest these towers from Athena on clearance...see link
http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ATLS500
For Subs, you're gonna need two...that's right two subs. There's a great deal on Amazon on Velodyne vp1200s ...
http://www.amazon.com/VELODYNE-ACOUS...5328487&sr=1-3
At that price they're given em away. I can tell you from listening experience that these are great subs and you can't do better at that price...period. Hurry though, i'm sure they'll sell out in no time.
That just about covers your budget...FOR NOW. You can always add a center and surrounds later. A package like this is the foundation of an HT/Music system anyone could be proud of. Hope this helps

For your budget, I think you are looking at some good gear. I have the Monitor 50 speakers, the CS2 center and monitor 30 speakers for my side surrounds. I also have the Onkyo 605 receiver. If I had your budget and was spending the money right now, I would make some adjustments.

First, the receiver. I think you're making a great choice. While I like my Onkyo, I would probably get the 1018 if I had it to do over, and had the extra money.

For the front speakers, if you have a Circuit City nearby, check there. I got my CS2 center for $90 on close out. For the Monitor 50's, checkout the official eBay store for Polk (you can find it on the Polk Audio website). I got my 50's delivered for $180 for the pair. I would also recommend maybe stepping down a bit to the Monitor 30's for the surrounds to save a few bucks. With some diligent shopping on your speakers, you can probably free up an extra $100 or so. Why? For the sub. I like Polk speakers, but I don't think they bring the same value to their subs, so I'd look else where for that. Take a look at the subwoofer forum, but I'll pitch a recommendation for the Elemental Designs A2-300 for $350 shipped. While two subs would be nice, you don't need two subs and at $300/each, a pair of those Velodynes will blow out your budget. That way, you'll have a complete 5.1 system now and you could always add a 2nd ED A2-300 later.

You've gotten good advice, but I would have to agree with griz_fan; One Polk PSW10 is not going to cut it and for $600, a good ID sub will be better than two of those Velodynes.

If that's really important to you, then you need to up the sub budget. How much did you spend on the drivers, enclosure and amp for your car sub? You say you want that impact in your house, which is a much larger volume. If that's the case, you have to spend more. If you stick to a $250 budget for the sub, you will be dissapointed. Head over to the sub forum for more recommendations. The ed mentioned is reportedly good bang for the buck; if you can spend more, consider an Epik or MFW-15. Something of that caliber will give you the 'kick in the chest' you want.

The Velodynes are on sale...$188.00!!!!!! OOOPs too late they're off sale already.
If you go to the vendors site direct exponj.com, they're still $188.00. You cannot beat this sub at that price.

I think the Monitor 50's at around $200-250 a pair is a GREAT value. You can get refurb from polk audio ebay store for under $200 a pair.

I can probably up my budget to about $1300 max. Which would give some more room for a sub. I have been reading the subwoofer thread and am thinking about an eD A-300, a Cadence CSX-15, or at the max an Epik Valor. What does anyone know about their matched speakers compared to Polk?

wleehendrick - I get what you are saying. I got the 10's for $250 a piece, they are usually $500 a piece, and I paid about $700 for the amp. So, yeah it makes a lot more sense now. I think that I am getting that I can spend a little less on the rear fill with smaller speakers and use that extra for the sub.

if you have a fry's near you, check them out for deals on the monitor 50's
they constantly have them in maple for either $79.99 or $99.99 a speaker, and will sometimes put the cs1 center for $49.99(it was this past week i believe)

I picked up my monitor 50's in black on closeout from them for $60 a piece, and a velodyne vrp1200 subwoofer for $90 on closeout as well.

I have been very happy with the monitor 50's and cs1 though, but stay away from the psw10 sub. I was looking into that for a while, and ended up picking it up from circuit city to take home and try, and I was not impressed in the least bit, and that was even comparing it to an old sony htib powered sub, which isnt saying much at all.

but like other peope have mentioned, check out the polk direct ebay store, always some good deals on there

How are eD's A3-5TC and A6-5T5 speakers?

Also how do these three packages compare? and is each one worth the increase in price? Not much difference from SVS to HSU, but a bigger jump from eD up to those two.

Any help on the above?

So I went yesterday to Circuit City and listened to the Polk Monitor 40's and the Polk CS1 and really enjoyed the sound. I really liked the mid bass, but the highs sounded a bit hissy, but that might have been the way the receiver was set up. They also had a pair of Klipsch B-3 hooked up and I found the the highs sounded more appealing to me, a little more warm and not as sharp on the hissy side, but their was a lot less mid bass. This should help with pointing me in the right direction. I was wondering how the Polk and Klipsch I listened to at CC compared to the systems listed above. I am really leaning towards the eD because of the price, but could go for one of the others if there was enough of an increase in quality to justify the price increase. Thanks for any help.

I also have a question about mounting. Based on the wight of the Polk CS1 I would guess that all of the other center channels of the above listed speaker companies would weight about the same. I have to mount the center above the TV, with that weight what would be the best way to mount them? The TV is in a cut out above our fireplace so there are studs in the roof of the cut out that I can access. Are there mounting brackets that could be attached to the back of the speaker? Just looking for options.

i mounted my cs1 under my tv with a simple wooden shelf i picked up at lowes for about $20. it has metal on the backside of the shelf thats against the wall. the shelf pulls way, and you drill it into two studs, slide the shelf back on, and your good to go. i got mine in black to match the tv and speakers, but i have seen them in a few colors.

there is probably a more specific speaker only mount, but i havent had any problems with this, and the price was right.
