LG BH200 - Known Disc Issues - Page 6

Tried traitor again...an now it plays without a problem.
Something weird about that. I wonder if the disks just don't seat properly sometimes. Or maybe the laser(s) is a little off. Weird.
My player plays all of the disc except for "for your eyes only". Now that I can't play it i want to see it.

Good news
- The last "new" HD DVD that has come out is Death Proof (German Steelbook) and it works just fine in my LG 200's

And Madagascar is definitely on the list. It's definitely frustrating when these disks don't play. But otherwise, it's a great player.

Please drop a review in the Software forum. Do you have the Peter & the Wolf HD DVD, by chance?

AVS does not allow anyone to post reviews...can't.

And No on Peter and the Wolf.

ummmm... no?
My copy of Terminator 2 Premium Edition Steelbook from Japan works as well but beware there are issues with freezing on the discs and they are replacing the discs so if you have that one and it is freezing it is not the BH 200 at fault this time.

Strange; the Forum Rules in the HD DVD Software section says nothing about a ban on doing title reviews. Oh well....

There is a formal BD title review forum, and essentially only one particular reviewer is authorized to post, AFAIK. Discussing the technical merits and the quality of the transfer is allowed/encouraged for both BD and HD DVD in their respective software forums - just not detailed Siskel and Ebert style film reviews that discuss the film itself rather than the BD/HD transfer. What AVS is trying to avoid are pseudo- or actual professional film/DVD reviewers from using AVS as a free springboard.

AFAIK, IMHO,

Bingo.

Which is why I no longer bother. I got a nasty PM from a mod for posting a link to my review (which someone asked about) several months back (yet others can post all the live long day to other website) so I no longer even bother.

Intellectual property, money and advertising income. *Always* follow the money.

It might just the the trait of the rental disc, but The Dark Knight goes directly into the movie (skips menu) on my player. I'll have to rent some more movies to make sure it's not on all discs, but it's still weird. When I press the menu button, I get the "no" symbol in the top right corner.
That's normal for Dark Knight. Matter of fact I believe most Warner Blu-rays do that. I actually prefer that then being forced to go through all of Disney's garbage before you even get to the movie.

Also, don't hit "menu" hit "title/popup"

There's no difference with rental discs vs. purchased discs which is why I generally avoid Disney discs. I'm not in the mood to pay $25+ for forced trailers.

Warner (and Paramount?) discs tend to go right to the movie. Universal and Sony discs stop at the menu. Of course, Warner discs go right to the movie in DD/DD+ rather than Dolby TrueHD.
Paramounts also goto the menu first. And are there any Warner discs with both DD+ and TrueHD on board?

AFAIK, you are correct. I think Warner was either DD+ or TrueHD, but not both. But, I think his point was the disk defaults to a lossy format instead of TrueHD or uncompressed PCM. That's one of my gripes, too. Initially, I thought it was nice skipping the menu and going right to the film before I realized I always had to access it anyway to choose a lossless or uncompressed audio format. Seems silly to me. Why wouldn't the studio want the default choice to be the best audio the format has to offer? But, then again, Warner has a pretty miserable track record when it comes to supporting HD audio.

Fortunately, the 5000 has an audio button that will bring up the audio choices in a small opaque menu immediately (the BH200 may also, I just haven't played with it much)...still a hassle but helps to cut back on the frustration a tad.

I hate to say it guys ,but if a HD disc won't work I'm just going to go with SD upconvert. I know this do not matter with loading ,but I do use a scaler out to my display.

This pertains to the region A BD with the April firmware.

The movie played fine, but the BD-exclusive special feature, "The X-Files: The Complete Timeline" doesn't work. After the animated X-Files logo, the disc freezes on the static background.

Has this feature worked for anyone else? Does it require the June firmware? I had been keeping the April firmware around for the AVCHD support...

IIRC 300, Blade Runner, Superman Returns (on HD DVD) have both THD & DD+ tracks.

I'm running June firmware and was able to use the timeline feature without lock up.

In general, hit the pop-up button, will get you to all the menu options maybe not same look and feel - depends on authoring, but you can change audio, subtitles, access extras, etc. Many new BDs are like this, and I like it (no more ad crap).

I had it rented and I remember working fine other than the crappy gamma/contrast authored for the extras; sorry, can't check again more specifically...
Running April FW for AVCHD too.

You are correct. Warner did, in fact, put DD+ and TrueHD on all three of those HD DVD titles (boy, they really threw everything at that 300 disk, didn't they?!). Seems odd they'd do that; if your equipment could deal with DD+ then it should handle TrueHD as well. Oh, well. Of course, the Blu-ray version of Superman Returns only had plain, old DD. Way to go, Warner!

Update. I loaded the June firmware and "The X-Files: The Complete Timeline" special feature from "I Want to Believe" is now working!

Awesome extra by the way for fans of the show.
