Cheap ~$200 2.0/2.1 setup

Here is the situation:

I am in an apartment ("technically" a condo hah) and happen to like my neighbors so the sub can/will be happily sacrificed for a boost in speaker quality (can always get a sub later). The living room isn't big (~700 sqft apartment) and the arrangement would be somewhat difficult for 5.1.
I currently have a very old and crappy aiwa (sigh...) 2.1 setup. So anything will be an upgrade.
This is just for TV, music, and occasional games. However, music would be my biggest concern.

Budget: ~200 if possible. I would consider a ~100 dollar boost for a good reason, but honestly I just want something to sound "ok". I got my dt770 headphones for when I need great sound.

Currently I am thinking bookshelf speakers are my best option, looking at some Diamond 9.1's which I can get off ebay for ~250. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

You can get a pair of Polk RTi8's for $300. I would definitely do that for $100 over your price. If you don't want to go that high, then RTi6's would definitely make you happy as well for a little under $200.

Sounds like you're the prime candidate for ID (internet direct) speakers like those from ********** or axiom.com. These tend to be decent sounding without breaking the bank. Although what you gain in value, you give up in instant gratification.

A sale on a discontinued speaker system which should work very well in a 2.0 setup.
The speakers are specifically a left and right model because of the side mounted woofer

Did you need a receiver as well ?

Whoops, ya I need a receiver as well. Guess I am going to have to raise my budget to over $300 to include a receiver.

Though that receiver (http://www.accessories4less.com/make...eceiver/1.html) is a good price on sale, I will be paying that price again just in shipping. However, even for ~$140 am I going to find a better deal?

And, can't find any Polk RTi8 for under ~200 a piece. That's out of my budget.

The acoustic research speakers (http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/58-12545) seem better (at least from reviews) than the Behringer B2030P. After shipping the acoustic research speakers would be ~$50 more. Thinking it might be worth it....

Thanks for the quick replies btw.

EDIT: Nevermind on the Onkyo price. Ground shipping is only $28 so the final price would be $107.50. Seems like a great deal. That leaves still leaves the speaker choice. Anyone got something better to offer or a comment between spending $50 more on the "acoustic research" over the Behringers?

www.frys.com has the Polk RTi8 speakers for $150 each, but their site has server problems (Sunday afternoon) so you may not be able to confirm the price until they clear it up.

Amazon.com has the Polk Monitor 50's on sale for $145 each (with free shipping), the price seems to change almost daily, they were $130

For bookshelfs in your price range, I would also look at the Acculine A1 or A1R. They appear to be poor cousins to the BG Z-1. Not too shabby.

For a receiver, I would be considering an Onkyo SR505 from Amazon.

Polks Rti8 are sold out from Fry's. But they have the R50 in cherry for $59 each. If you don't mind the color this is a steal. But you should hurry because they sell out fast. In person the cherry looks better than the black.

athena LS-300 is $99 each shipped on Amazon.
