'Legend of the Seeker' - First run syndication in HD - Page 5

I have a friend who lives in the U.K. who is currently down under visiting family and playing tourist. He has visited the Hercules/Xena sets quite often.

He went to the stream that you see at the beginning of the first episode. Here is the remainder of his report:

Quote:

The first set of photos we took were of them building some new sets on Hugh Green's land down at the former Lion Park site down on Red Hills Road in Massey. Yup, RenPics are building a new vintage village where the Xena and Herc sets stood from season four onwards.

Then later on we headed to Muriwai where we crossed the bridge "Richard Cypher built" at the start of the first episode. Just next to it was a generator truck, which despite being whisper quiet was running - so we followed the seriously heavy duty cables which trailed over the next couple of hillsides and valleys away from it and found the main production crew. I had a very short chat to the director of photography who was at the catering truck at the time. He confirmed to me that they were shooting episodes for Legend Of The Seeker and was VERY SURPRISED that someone in New Zealand had seen it already.

We could hear Bridget Regan screaming a battle cry across the valley and as we walked out we were passed by a horsebox with just one horse in it. So I can confirm that today, Friday 16th January, Pac Ren Pics were filming a new episode of Legend Of The Seeker on Cable Road at Muriwai. I would imagine that if you see her with horse in a solo battle in a future episode set in a steeply wooded valley, that was what they were shooting while we were there.

I'll have photos up on my website whenever I can manage to get them.

Another SD airing on WGN America. Wake up, guys!

If anybody else is watching on that channel, did you have lip-sync problems with the last two episodes, or is it just me?

They have to be having trouble with their SD/HD server.

Tribune headquarters receives the HD feed and then sends it to each of the Tribune owned stations via satellite IP delivery. AFAIK, no other Tribune station aired it in SD, which would indicate to me a local issue with the server.

There was nothing wrong with the feed.

I finally got a chance to do a comparison between the premiere movie version
and the two separate episodes. The time differences are based solely on
program content, no closing credits or previews.

The break in the feed for the premiere matches the break between episode 1 and
2. That made it real easy to compare.

For the times given below, the first value is the premiere, the 2nd the repeat.

LG101:
46:41.28
42:45.10

LG102:
40:59.07
40:58.11

I attempt to always edit on an I-frame, so the time for the 2nd episode is
a wash, meaning that the two parts are equal.

Part 1, OTOH, is just shy of a 4 minute difference. That means they cut out
quite a bit for the single episode. If you are keeping this program, you
definately want to keep the 2hr movie.

Sync is off on the HD feed but was OK on the analog channel. Since I edit everything (VideoReDo), adjusting the sync is pretty simple.

I'm about ready to give up on WGN America for HD. I'm starting to think it's intentional rather than accidental. Random checks seem to show 4:3 every time I tune it in.

I don't have any other broadcast source for it in HD. It just showed up on the "local" CW station (mid-season? huh?) but I can't get it OTA and neither cable nor satellite carries it in HD.

HD right now on WNUV.
It's a shame you can't get this in HD Jim. I'm getting it OTA from WPIX NY, part of Tribune. Show looks gorgeous in HD. They really do a good job. This weeks episode featured a lot of interiors/ castle shots/ low light stuff that held up really well. Very film like.

The show is fed to the stations at a fixed 37 Mbps, more than double the standard for re-encoding at the lower ATSC bitrate. And yes, the show does indeed look great.

Hopefully they'll release it in 1080p Blu-ray.

I really liked how we got to see Rachel. Even though they are changing the books somewhat, it is nice to see characters from it. Good episode.
Yea, definately getting a little better.

Although they lost the whole effect of hiding the box in the bread. In the book, when Richard and Kahlen finally find Rachel she's starving to death but hasn't eaten the bread, so they know that something is strange going on.

I think they're really limiting themselves to much too short of time periods for each episode. If they would just let a couple of weeks of time roll by rather than just a day or two of action, then they could cover a lot more interesting points like the one above.

I'm not familiar with the books and probably won't read them right now since posters have stated that they have made many changes, but do they have enough material to sustain a multi season show if it gets renewed?

Oh yes, once the Darken Rahl thing is taken care of, there is the whole issue of the massive invasion from the south from the dreamwalker. TONS of material to keep this going for many seasons.
Yeah 11 books, all of which are larger than the normal 300-350 pgs, some of which are about 600 pgs. Plus a novella. So lots and lots of material.

Tonight the lip sync wasn't blatantly bad as it was the past two weeks, but it still didn't feel right for some reason. Maybe I was just expecting it to be bad?

But I'm peeved at WGN because not only was it in SD again, but I happened to see the end of the re-run of last week's episode (which was in SD then) and it was in HD now! Since WGN America is a national channel, I wonder if this is some perverse attempt to placate the syndicated-exclusivity folks?

We've got two locals that show in SD, I understand what you're talking about with the sync, one of the stations, the Fox affiliate seemed to be perfectly in sync, the other a CW affiliate had what looked like lip/sync problems, it wasn't really off, but the audio didn't seem to match quite right, it is very difficult to explain, it seems like they start talking and the sounds come out right, but then the lips and words seem out of sync before they finish the sentence, it is hard to explain, like the frame rate was variable or something, it just seems out of whack at times.
Yes, that's exactly what I was seeing! It seemed to be in sync at some times and out of sync at others, even over a span of one sentence! Very weird.

'Legend of the Seeker' Renewed For Season Two

Tribune stations extend commitment

By Paige Albiniak -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/25/2009 10:04:00 PM MT

Disney-ABC Domestic Television has renewed its fantasy action hour, Legend of the Seeker, on Tribune Broadcasting’s owned stations for next fall, according to Disney-ABC Domestic Television Distribution President Janice Marinelli.

Tribune, which has operated as partner to Disney-ABC on the show from the beginning, owns stations in seven of the top ten markets and representing 35% of the country.

Legend of the Seeker, starring Craig Horner and Bridget Regan, has averaged between a 1.6 and 1.9 live plus same day national household rating since its Nov. 1 premiere. The show is produced by ABC Studios. Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Spider- Man 2, Spider-Man 3 and The Evil Dead), Rob Tapert (The Grudge, Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Cleopatra 2525), Joshua Donen (The Quick and the Dead), Ned Nalle (production executive for Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) and Ken Biller (Star Trek: Voyager and Six Degrees) serve as executive producers.

Sweet on the renewal.

Wow, talking about breaking away from the books. geez, this whole episode seemed to be un-related to the books. Oh well, still enjoyed it. Loving Zedd's use of magic, really a highlight in the show.
IM just enjoying the ride.

Now it was scary what Zed did when confessed. How could he NOT see that coming. Im surpised he had not spell up to prevent it.

Yeah the only connection to the book was the concept that all male confessor children are supposed to be killed at birth. They seemed to take that one concept and run with it.

I'm guessing that they were introducing the concept now because it comes up again later when Richard and Kahlen finally hook up.

It was a bit better than the other non-book based episodes, but I fear they screwed up a bunch of the book's world view and now there's a bunch of stories they won't be able to tell.

BTW, Bridget was SMOKING HOT in the mord sith leathers.
They can pull that ruse as many times as possible in this series afaic.
Glad to see it got renewed and ditto to Bridget as Mord Sith.
Am I not remembering this correclty, but in the books, wasn't Khalan the last Confessor and already the Mother Confessor?
^^^^ Yep. They're doing some major screwing around with major parts of Goodkind's world. Which is why I'm afraid that their mucking about is going to make it impossible to tell some of the stories from the books.

The sad part about it is that it's unnecessary. Even if they want to tell their own stories, they could still stick to the original worldview.

Did anyone else find it weird when Kahlan kissed her sister on the lips near the end of the episode? Not that I'm complaining...

Also, I have to agree with everyone else that the last 3 episodes (starting with the episode where Richard is captured by Dena) are way better than the episodes they were showing before the winter break.

Now that the show is renewed for a second season, I realy hope Time Warner adds WGN HD soon to my area.

And they did it twice!! But I thought the same thing, that it was kind of weird for a kiss.
