Auto-recognizing a movie? Why does it do this?

HDTV: Samsung LN 32 450
Computer: Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop

I connect my laptop to the PC port on the back of my LCD HDTV via SVGA wire and go to the PC Source on my TV. My desktop shows up and I load a movie using Zoom Player or VLC. When I do this, is automatically recognizes that I am viewing a movie and hides all the controls and makes it full screen. It isn't full screen on my laptop monitor, but it is on the TV. I wouldn't mind this feature, but when does this, it is not centered on the TV.

It is not stretched weird or anything, and it still looks good. This is normally a .mkv file, but also works with any streaming movie/tv show on ninjavideo. The video goes widescreen, but is flush against the top and stops around the center of my TV. In other words, instead of there being equal space on top and bottom of the widescreen movie, there is 0 space on top and a ton of space on the bottom.

Any ideas on how to change this?
