Samsung BD-UP5000 Firmware 1.4 Released Report BUGS\FIXES

I have one of those Paramount BD released in the summer that will freeze on 1.3 firmware when access menu. However, I can't remember which one it is

Did a brief session of setup and was disappointed to see that Samsung didn't include the 4:3 pillarbox mode (16x9 compressed) in the new firmware that was available for 1500/2500/2550 for a long time.

So I'd assume this firmware will fix the known issue with Paramount BD menu freeze and a few titles that can't be played, i.e. Made of Honor and the latest 007 BD. To be tested will be if it also fixes the Paramount title playback issues in 24p mode.

While Samsung has send out words promise DTS-HD HR and MA decoding updates to BD-P2500/2550 by the end of the year, we can only hope we get some of those features tricle down to us poor 5K owners.

hunt for red october, top gun, any tom clancy movie

I believe all of their July 29th titles were affected, which would include the 4 Jack Ryan films, Beowulf, Top Gun and Shine a Light.

Hunt For Red October works perfectly, all of the menus and the fast-forwarding. In addition, the Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix HD DVD can now play the PIP, which always froze my player up.

The "Bonus View" still comes up on my Universal BD's, including Leatherheads.

What a relief to see that some of my discs are working properly!

I meant to say I forgot which one in my pile of BDs is the Paramount problem disc. Now you mentioned, I remember it is one of the Jack Ryan films.

Transformers HD-DVD at 24 frames is even worse with the top part of the video flickering. Before updating just now, I confirmed that I still see the flickering at 1.3. After updating to 1.4, it's really bad -- much more frequent flickering and over a larger area down from the top.

If I recall, this was a problem with initial firmware (I saw the flickering then), was fixed at 1.1 (no flicker), then broken again at 1.3, and is now really broken at 1.4. As before, 24 frames off = no flicker; 24 frames on = bad flicker.

Band of Brothers Japaneese import even worse now. On firmware v1.3, there was studdering at 1080p/24 and on 720P, there was occasional green flicker on screen. Audio was previously flawless. Now on firmware v1.4, the flickering is even worse and there are now audio dropouts on bitstream audiophile and pcm modes.

Just to clarify - this is the Japanese import HD-DVD 5-disk set of Band of Brothers and I'm running a Yamaha HTR-6160

If anyone has the NIN HD DVD can you give it a shot to see if they fixed it. I still don't understand how they continue to mess up HD DVD playback when nothing has changed on the format at all.

I also just upgraded my BD-UP5000 to v1.4 and now I'm getting audio drop-outs and some stuttering on my HD DVD videos (The Eagles, etc) with DTS audio. The player is set to 1080i, Bitstream (Audiophile), using HDMI and I'm running optical out to my receiver.

I never had this problem before so just to make sure, I reverted back to Firmware 1.3 and all is fine. I even tried 1.4 again and the problem returned so I'm just going to stick with 1.3 until the next one comes out. (If ever)

Why can't Samsung get things right without mucking something else up?

They could learn a few things about firmware upgrades from other manufacturers!

I simply inserted the v1.3 firmware disc. This downgraded the player from v1.4 to v1.3.

The Samsung apparently has this ability to revert back to earlier firmwares if you have the disc. That's why i always download the ISO file from Samsung when a new firmware comes out and burn it to CD.

polkyscroll - Thanks! I reverted back to v1.3 and things are now back to usual. v1.4 is a mess. I just can't beleive they can't get it right...

Reading this thread (and others)...I can't help but think how anti-climactic these DF players have become. I am pissed to no end to hear that 24fps flickering is worse. That was the FIRST thing I complained about when 1.3 arrived...I guess I should've called them weekly on the topic.

And "Bonus View" is still present? Get out!

Darn, I was hoping they broke-out the option for that message into a distinct setting. You either turn off *all* on-screen UI, or none. I turned it off completely (thus never see "bonus view"), so I need to use the "info" screen to know where I am on a disc, or look at the front panel.

That's still my only gripe at this point. Wish they had fixed that with an option to turn it off during viewing.
Everything else seems to work just fine, but have not tried to see if the 'affected' movies now play just fine.
No audio, etc. problems.
Make sure you redo the setup menu after the update. I don't even bother with 24fps. 60Hz playback is just fine with my Sam. plasma.

So if I currently have this player hooked up to a TV that is not 1080P/24 is this firmware OK? It seems it has fixed a lot of the new blu ray disc issues.

I believe the 60Hz is still the default. The specific display is certainly a variable as to the success of using 24Hz, as may be the specific program material.

NIN: Beside You in Time - Does "not" fully load the beginning menu (it just freezes). Samsung is taking their sweet @ss time fixing issues and I'm losing my cool.

Yes, playback of Universal Blu-rays with Bonus View features (i.e. Incredible Hulk) results in the "Bonus View" icon to show when screen messages are enabled. Annoying but at least there is a workaround. Is this more intended behavior?

Pan's Labyrinth HD DVD: I loaded this 4 times. I didn't notice any pops (bitstreamed) within the first 5 minutes of the movie (a place where they usually appear). However, I did have one session with dropouts galore. I'm going to attribute that to a random glitch (stream initialization failure during the HDMI handshake perhaps). If others with the title can confirm, I'll drop this one off the disc problem list.

La Haine HD DVD : This one plays and navigates without locking the player finally. Color me shocked since it's an import and fewer people own it in the NA market. I'm still unable to access scene selection, so this will likely never see a fix. Not a big deal thanks to navigation finally working!

The Kingdom HD DVD : The U-Control menus are still slow as molasses, sometimes taking 10 seconds or more to load or switch between the various fact/trivia columns. Since many HDi menus are similarly sluggish on the disc menu screens themselves, this is just a matter of poorly optimized HDi code as previously stated and I don't see it getting any better than this unfortunately.

Transformers, Disturbia and Beowulf HD DVDs in 24fps : Serious upper screen flickering in scenes with movement and yes, perhaps worse than firmware 1.3. Totally unacceptable. Things We Lost in the Fire was another I checked and I only saw a single flicker in the first 5 minutes, so likely a more intermittent issue on this title.

At least it's not all negative with 1.4...but I was expecting more (my first mistake ).

'Still'? I never had a problem with HIT MAN (BD), even before the update.

That's all I've checked...give it a little time for others to verify and report their findings.

Txstick, you either have a bad disc or a defective player (there are hardware batches that have been unable to play Fox discs and were required to be sent in to Samsung to repair).
