SACD 5.1 and DVD changer w/HDMI?

I'd like to have a 5-disc changer for SACD 5.1 primarily, but also DVD. I want to use an HDMI connection to my Pioneer SC-05. I've read similar topic threads, but I'm still a bit unsure of a few details.

I'm still unclear about which HDMI standard on the player is required. I assume that SACD 5.1 sent via HDMI is decoded in the AVR... right?

Any recommendations for changers that fit my specs are most welcome; I'd like to keep the cost at or below $400. Let me know if that's an unreasonable cost, too... I don't want to ruin the hi-res audio with a poor player.

SACD requires HDMI 1.2 (or above) and no SACD changer currently has that capability. Your receiver will also need to be HDMI 1.2 (or above) capable and able to decode DSD in order for this to work.

Hey, you're in Castro Valley too! Small world.

So I guess I'll need to either go with a single disc player for HDMI, or go with a changer and connect to the SC-05 using multichannel inputs. I would so much rather plug in one HDMI than six RCAs.

It looks like a good single-disc player for HDMI (1.2a) connection might be the Oppo DV-980h... anyone use this for SACD 5.1 via HDMI?

Kal, do you have a preference for either PCM or DSD output when playing SACDs from the 980h?

kal's review of the 980h... kal points out in his review that he preferred pcm in the setup that he was using, and i personally trust his ears...

i have a 980h and a sc-05 like you do... to be honest, i really can't tell a difference between passing dsd or pcm to the sc-05, but i can't claim any scientific validity to my opinion, since it was done sighted, and i honestly didn't spend a lot of time playing with it... i just set it to pcm and have since forgotten about it...

Thanks, all... just ordered the 980h. What a bargain this player is! Made it easy to order some SACD and DVD-A discs while I was shopping. Considerate of Oppo to provide you with the HDMI cable, too.

Amazon shipped the Oppo seven seconds after I ordered it, I think. BadaBing, had it in two days with free shipping. And my first batch of discs arrived three days early, too.

Sting, Nothing Like The Sun (DVD-A)
Roxy Music, Avalon (SACD)
Pink Floyd, DSOTM (SACD)
I will also admit that I bought Aerosmith/Toys on SACD just for the wonder that is Sweet Emotion

All I can say is, wow. Just wow. Especially Avalon. As for the Oppo, it's ideal for audio; easy HDMI into my Pioneer SC-05, great setup menu that more companies should emulate. Options that matter!

Brothers in Arms (SACD) is on its way to me, too. Really enjoying the rediscovery of some of my favorite "audiophile pop" from back in the day.

Glad you are happy with the 980.

For others looking for a player over HDMI, the Pioneer uses the same mediatek processor, has all the same functions, including DSD over HDMI, and a more solid build quality. It's priced well below the Oppo now:

This looks like a good place to ask. Do I need this Pioneer for DVD-Audio if I have the Toshiba A3?

I have a Denon 987 with HDMI hookups. But is there any reason to buy into DVD-Audio if my receiver doesn't have a decoder and it's hooked up with the HDMI cable? Or will the fiber optic cable be okay for now?
