i tested a XBR? vs a samsung A850 for movies and gaming

ok i went to futureshop and compare the samsung a850 and sony xbr6. i bring my
PS3 console with games and blu-ray movies and compare them becuase i bought my lcd tv tomorrow.

I choose the Xbr6.

i explain....

First i took 90 minutes with each tv testing them. i calibrated each tv very nicely. i tried several setting. ALL TEST IN HDMI with monster cable.

- For gaming in 1080p with ridge racer 7 , the XBR6 win , because the color are more natural, EVEN 120hz mode cinemotion, work perfectly without too much lag. a lot less blur in gaming. a little little more lag for samsung but a lot less blur too but more artefact even at low. The worst thing is : the samsung look strange with amp on even on LOw compare to sony that look completly normal and natural. The Picture quality has more details and sharpness with the sony xbr6. big difference. i tried so many setting to get the samsung look like the xbr6, but its seem impossible for me. i PLAYED WITH ALL SETTING. i tried different sharpness level. yeah the samsung has more pop, but in ridge racer 7 it look really funny to see that pop effect, i prefer the sony.

- the 120 hz mode is better with sony, less artefact and less blur.

- the color after calibration seem better with the sony too. better natural color effect.

- samsung has more Pop but more cartoon like. not always great for movies, even ice age look strange with that pop effect. But great for walt disney movies. not great for gaming.

- i found the 480p on samsung terrible but didnt test that on the sony. better its worst who know ?

- for 720p gaming samsung seem to have a little little better sharpness. it look more soft than xbr6 but i prefer that, because it look more natural. i understand why some people said said hd tv is not great. i suppose sony is not so great in 1080i.
i tested motorstorm 1 and 2

- In general the samsung has less details than sony and look more soft .

In 1080p movie, ice age has more details in the sony xbr6 and look more natural. cool temp are better with xbr6 than cool 1 and 2 on samsung. ice age look too much cartoon on samsung because the pop effect.

none of the 2 tv impress me in 120 hz mode with movies, look too much cartoon or videolike, but sony look less videolike than samsung. So if you want to see movie in 120 HZ take the xbr6. more natural look and less artefact

SO i take the xbr6 tommorow

i know the pop effect of the samsung is cool to see in store in some previews or with some movies, but in reality its not great for general movies experience and gaming.

i calibrated it for myself ( my taste)
i try to get it the more natural color possible.
i have some knowledge to calibrate television, because of my father job

in canada the samsung a850 is 3699$
and
xbr6 is 3199$

in 52''

so i save 500$ to buy the xbr6.

black are great in xbr6 , the best i have seen in a lcd tv(no led), except for a850 lol.
for me its a tie.
the a850 glossy screen give a impression of better blacks than xbr6. but in reality , its seem a tie.
i dont need a led backlight Lcd with blacks like xbr6 and a850.

i didnt check the off-angle so much, but i think the a850 is better with off angle than xbr6. for me the xbr6 is correct too, but not great like xbr4, thats for sure.

i did some others test today at futureshop with my ps3. because i bought my tv today. after several tests again... i buy the xbr6.

my father, me and 3 sellers guys, and a specialist guy in calibration ( the guy that calibrate all set in the shop) help me and give me their opinion. it was a funny day, all sellers have love to see my ps3 running on the xbr6 and a850. we try some blu-ray movies and playing some games.

my father, the 3 sellers and the specialist guy were all agree to say the xbr6 has a better PQ than A850. forget about the a850 glossy screen. i know its look great, but its doesnt help to compare the PQ.

The sony has definately more sharpness and details. really more details. we try all the possible tog et a great PQ with the A850. i dont say the a850 is bad , its only not as good like xbr6. The color are more natural too with the xbr6, even after calibrated colors in samsung. and the xbr6 colors seem to have more pop than a850 in reality. hard to explain. colors are so impressive with xbr6. if you can remove the glossy screen from the a850 and put a matte screen, im sure the sony would have more pop in store than a850

SINCERELY , i love glossy screen, and i love samsung too, all my friends buy samsung lcd tv because of me But the xbr6 beat a850.


ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING: the xbr6 has a little little lag in gaming in 120 hz mode, its so small that it cant be a problem with any games.
But the samsung a850 has too more controller lag in 120hz mode, its not very playable for me, not in racing game at least.

In Ice age movie and ridge racer 7 game, the colors are more bright and natural in xbr6 than A850. we try all our best to calibrate each tv. the specialist guy and me even try several differents setting with each set.

we took 3 hours to compare each set.

finally, my father and me found the black more black in xbr6 than samsung a850 too. its hard to judge because the a850 is glossy

for all of us, xbr6 is the clear winner. if the samsung was the better set, it would be my pleasure to buy it. i love glossy screen. anyway glossy screen has nothing to do with PQ.

note: i have to say i was impressed with the a950. The blacks are really black, cant imagine more black than that. i was more impress with black of the a950 than xbr8. i tried ice age in blur-ray with the a950, and was great like a850, not much details and sharpness than a850, but the black are really better than a850. i didnt want to pay 5000$ for the a950, but if it was in the same price range than xbr6 at 3199$ in 52'', i dont know if i will buy the xbr6 or a950. for me the xbr6 pq overall is hard to beat, but black in a950 are really impressive.

i will receive my xbr6 tomorrow in evening

hmmm i dont know about your pink thing. sorry. i didnt see that. but the colors of the xbr6 are really better than w4100. if you calibrate each of them you can see the difference. xbr6 is 10 bit panel and processing it makes a difference. use wide color option. but if for you the difference is not worth it go with the w4100. but for me it worth the difference. i know the xbr6 off-angle are not good but i didnt find the w4100 off angle really better. and the xbr6 black are more black than w4100.

im sure that xbr4 off-angle are a lot better than xbr6. very easy to see. xbr4 look near perfect at nearly any off-angle

ok i got my xbr6 and calibrate it.

i have to say that set BEAT ANY SAMSUNG in PQ.

im very impressed. WOW. the picture sharpness and detail beat the samsung easily. im 100% sure about that. i had calibrate the a850 and a950 yesterday, nothing cant beat the xbr6 sharpness and details. a lot more of details in xbr6. 100% sure! very easy to see, if you can compare the set with a a850 or a950. its like real life. the blacks are only beaten by the a950, and not by much

Colors are so great and have a LOT A LOT A LOT OF POP. i really dont need a glossy screen like a samsung. the sony colors Pop so much.
The colors are really impressive and natural.
the xbox 360 games upgraded in 1080p look Wonderful.
i tried some blu-ray movies with my xbr6 and PS3. Pirate carabeen 3 look so nice its hard to believe it.

i will post some pictures tomorrow or in 2-3 days. i already took a picture, but im so dissapoint to see the picture cant show you the real PQ that i see in real life.

i see so many lcd tv and calibrate a lot of them. SINCERELY THE XBR6 beats all of them. no samsung tv cant beat that. you want the best PQ buy the xbr6. and you can play in 120hz mode with no controller lag, samsung cant do that.

WONDERFUL, they have to calibrate their xbr6 in shop and show you some blu-ray movies and youre sold.

i thought the samsung glossy screen beat the sony color in POP effect. but after calibrate the xbr6 .. i can even beat the samsung pop effect in term of rich colors and natural and Brightness.
i think the xbr6 is the brighter set you can buy. even my eyes suffer from it , when i max backlight setting.

now i have a bad news. i have some clouding or flashlight. im not sure if its flashlights or clouds. i have 3 white spot to the left and 2 white spot to the right. what do you think, do i have do exchange it for another xbr6 ? how are the chance to get clouding with a set ? i dont want to exchange my set 5 times. thanks for your opinion, i post my pictures soon. the set is so wonderful i prefer to keep a xbr6 with a few clouds than another set.
but 5 clouds is more than a few isnt?

i love the samsung a850 too. its a wonderful lcd tv. i recommend it for anyone that want a great PQ with a glossy screen. i took 3 hours to play with it and calibrate it. But the xbr6 PQ , sharpness and details is better. and voverall pq too. thats all.
in 120hz mode the controller lag is too bad for me with the samsung. i love playing in 120hz with my xbr6 because it remove a lot of blur. that all. anyway the xbr6 120 hz do have a little lag too but not has much has the samsung. in game mode xbr6 has no lag at all.

sorry guys i didnt want to say that samsung tv are bad, because they are wonderful tv too.

if i have to do a review i would have say 90% xbr6. 85% a850
