Good point. My favorite SD Sony player was the 999ES. I loved the picture memory feature. That was cool. I so far am happy about the S5000ES and have no plans to sell it. Especially since pic Q is top notch. I am liking the HD Reality Enhancer the more I play with it. And the load times are second to none. Some titles are actually loading within 6 to 10 seconds...

6-10 Seconds....wow.

It figures that Sony would be the first to get it right with speed in a stand alone. I know Pioneer OEM'd their previous BR players, is this 5000ES an in house build?

Maybe Sony has a conspiracy to have the only fast players on the market...

Just OOC Joe, have you been able to check and see that DTS HDMA is decoded and sent as LPCM via HDMI, and also through the 7.1 analogs?

Joe, you saying the 51FD is better than the Panny 35 for SD DVD? I have both players and I have to disagree with you there. Just my opinion there, but even 2 pro reviews that are currently out say the same re: SD.

Anyway, have you looked at how the player handles Bluray live material if you decode inside the unit?

Also, have you looked at how the unit handles DTS MA and DD True if you internal decode. The Panny ups DD to 7.1 if it is 5.1. Hopefully the Sony keeps 5.1 as is?

Also, have you tried any 7.1 PCM stuff yet. I know you have onkyo gear and there are some things the Panny also does if secondary audio is on vs off.

Joe, I love the memory feature the 999ES and 9100ES have. I can't tell you how many times I've relied on that, and have used no other player that has this feature. If the 5000ES has it, I may have to reconsider waiting! Does it have a disc memory, at least for SD titles? I know that may be tricky for Blu-ray depending on how the disc was authored.

I will do more tonite. SD dvd is very hard to tell. Are you using 1.12 firmware on the 51? The Panny BD35 is no slouch. Actually finally all the newer Blu-ray players are starting to finally do decent SD dvd performace. I will double check more tonite and do some direct comparisons with the BD35 and the 51FD. I admit I could have missed. I have been mainly concentrating on the S5000ES.

And yes to the internal decoding questions. It works fine. Also, it has kept the couple of 5.1 titles at 5.1. I can make adjustments in my receiver still to make it 7.1...

Some detailed tests re: the 3 players would be awesome!

Also good to know about the DDTrue HD re: 5.1 and 7.1

How are settings for blueray live handled? Is there a setting to turn it on and off like in the panny?

People were saying about this player being the same as the 550 in this and that, but obviously they have to be VERY diff cause then why the 1500 price diff? One thing that comes to mind is the decoding chip? Someone mentioned they might be the same? Do you know anything on this? Bluray.com has the 550 and 5000 as the same chips, but logic would tell me there is no way they can be the same?

Hi Jimi,

even IF (and they're not) they are 100% identical, by changing firmware optimization alone different results can be produced. Add differences in power supply, signal path, other minute differences in materials used. the sum of its total is potentially huge.

My point? just because two units are using the same chipset, the image quality may not necessarily be the same.

David hit it right on the head. The HD Reality Enhancer makes the S5000ES next level. Even if they do have the same exact chip (which for some reason I doubt) they are being implemented differently.

For now I just did some SD dvd checks. I will say the Panny BD35 is very good as well. I would retract my comparison statement that the 51FD is definitely better by saying they are more similar than different. I could not say one is clearly better than the other. I will say the 51FD sending source direct (480i) into my Edge (when I used it) did give a superior image. Upconverting both to 1080p or 1080i had very similar results. I can't post one is superior. Maybe the Pro reviewers can figure it out better than me. I used my Sony VPL VW200, Panasonic 50" 1080p plasma (new 850 series), Toshiba 32 REV 1080p LCD), Viewsonic 26" LCD and for fun a Sanyo Z5 720p pj. On all my displays the differences were negligible. When the Pros review components I am not sure how many players they can compare at once or how many different displays they use. I have been using a total of 8 different Blu-ray players and 5 different displays. I also tweak the picture on each to squeeze out every last drop. And I also test them with VPs as well as without VPs. I just want to be clear here and let everyone know I am not just sticking in a movie and posting. I take notes on each title which coincides with each player and of course each display. Yes, I am sick! TheBland is right. So finally, I will say the 3800 and S5000ES are at the top for SD dvd performance and the 51FD, BD35 are right behind them. Then even not much further is the rest of the newer generations. I am currently BETA testing a Blu-ray player (which I can't say what model it is) that will make things very interesting one day.

So now I am heading back to the lab... More results on the test discs to come in Part 3! As well as other questions...

Great feedback Joe...would you say the Denon 3800 and sony is a coin flip in quality with each other? Cost wise the Denon is a better value, but can't beat the sony in load time.

The Sony will probably soon be available from online merchants (ebay especially) for about $1500. Sony honors the warranty from any merchant, and it's a 5 year warranty. The Sony could be considered a better value.

Jerrod has done a good job narrowing the players down to this. For $1500.00, I'd take the Sony as I'm sure the crossover on the Sony is at the optimum frequency.

no sacd les, for that sony would want you to buy the matching sony sacd player ! which looks a beauty none the less ! but it might get a little confusing in your setup with two similar looking players for different duties hehe

Before I get into Part 3 I wanted to answer a couple of questions here and from PMs.

This player is made in Japan. I was asked that by 3 or 4 people.

And as far as my display chain being calibrated... What I mean is each display is calibrated to its best ability in a movie mode. More importantly though, each Blu-ray player that allows picture adjusting is also calibrated. I squeeze every last drop out of each player. I will also look at them without doing anything to make it fair to the players that do not have picture adjusting. You definitely can separate the men from the boys when you have a player that will allow you to tweak the picture enough to get it next level. I checked in here late Saturday and read some members asking where have I been. I had to laugh some since they may not realize how thorough I have been. I have decided to never again put a new player on just one display, throw in a few titles and then post about it. The only way to be accurate as possible is to take a weekend and work. Saturday was a 14 hour day!

Sounds like the Sony is the best "value" with the extra warranty... It seems as stable as the PS3 but with a picture quality and sound quality that is right on with the Denon 3800.

5 year warranty tells you that the manufacturer believes in their product

I agree that this is probably as close as we're gonna get (at this time) to PS3 speed and performance

Once I'm satisfied that there are no "freeze" issues - I'll order it
