This panel is very interesting... at a price that makes it compelling. Besides differences in cost, how does it compare to the Sony 52XBR6? Is there an argument to be made for the Sony?

Hd looks really good on my ATT uverse and standard def looks fairly good but I turn up the digital noise to high when I watch standard def.

What are your setting under the "Advanced Menu"? Also, what about under the "Picture Menu" for AV/ Mode and View Mode.

Thanks!

Have any owners used this with a computer (either from and HDMI-out or a DVI-out)? What are your thoughts (overscan, 1:1, different resolutions)?

I use dot by dot for av mode, advanced menu? Are you talking about the digital noise setting, film mode, etc. I provided those with my settings.
I connected my Dell XPS M1730 laptop to the tv by a dvi to hdmi cable and I played Flight Simulator it the tv looked very good. My laptop native refresh rate is 1900X1200 so I had to back the setting to 1900X1080 before connecting to the tv.
The text is really small and hard to read on Firefox on the tv.

Thanks! I will try your settings out as well as CNET and UltAV. I also will try setting it up with my 3M DVD disc and my HD DVD setup disc.

I tried those two online settings and they didn't work for me, the lime green yellows and incredibly dark screen with no life. Everyone's lcd and viewing environment is different though. Sometimes I turn the backlighting up to standard or 1, I geuss it depends on what I'm viewing and what time of day it is.

I have had mine for about a week now and tonight just after we watched a movie from the DVD player I tried to switch my input back to my DVR. But the tv turns its self off after about 15 -25 seconds and the OCC and Power lights just blink at me. Turn it back on and it wont stay on. I unplugged it and have attempted to reset back to default settings but I cant even get to the part to do that since it switchs off so fast. Of course Sharp had just closed its TechSupport 5 min before this happened so I will be calling in the morning to see what is going on with this.
Any one else had issuses like this?

today was tv day for me and a friend. went to 1 local shop and they had the new Sony 46S5100 and after an hr or so of watching that, the w4100 and the sharp he decided on the new Sony. I almost got the 46w4100 but knowing the 5100 isn't far off I held off.

So I focused on trying to see a difference between them and the sharp. we watched espn highlights, movies and a recorded bowl game (all cable). While the W was a tad more impressive the price/size won me on the sharp. 6" for a lil less and I am so happy as I watched a few shows and now going through various games on the 360 (cmp 1080p). So far so good. Some SD doesn't even look that bad. Used a mix of UAVM and bt's settings. ready for march madness and a hopeful PS3 price drop(borrowing bro's right now).

I'm trying to set up my PS3 on the LC52D85U. Using "normal settings" with either component or HDMI, the video looks somewhat choppy/blurred when objects move. I have the same problem with Xbox360, although HD TV channels appear just fine. I never had this problem on an older 1080i Philips LCD TV, anyone know which settings I should tweak to fix this? I turned off 120Hz and it seemed to lessen the effect a bit but it's still there.

I'm thinking of buying one of these for my Xbox360. Have you found a fix for your problem?

Ok, I just purchased this tv and have connected my ps3 via hdmi to it. I am watching a blu-ray movie, the new batman
How come the settings for Fine Tuning are disabled during the movie? I cannot adjust that or I/P. It also does not appear to be displaying in 120hz. What am I doing wrong? I have tried 2 diff brand new hdmi cables?

I am having the same issue. The manual shows how to change the Audio Setup in the Digital Setup menu, problem is there is no Audio Setup in that menu - just Software Update.

Bottom line I have 3 devices (Cable, XBOX 360 and Blu-ray) connected to TV via HDMI, and I am using the Digital Audio Output (Toslink) to go to my reciever. But I can only get 2 channel stereo. If I hook the devices up directly via Toslink ro my receiver they work fine. For some reason TV only outputting 2 channel PCM. Any ideas or help?

Did you get a reply from Sharp bobemmerich?

The only problem I am having is selecting the Optical Audio Output. Unfortunately, I do not have HDMI inputs on my Pioneer VSX-608 A/V receiver.

I have my HD cable box connected via HDMI (Input 5) and have connected a optical cable from the Aquos' Digital Audio Output to Optical Input 1 of my receiver. The Aquos manual says to Press MENU, Digital Setup, Audio Setup and scelect either PCM or Dolby Digital.

But when I go to the Digital Setup menu the only item shown is Software Update.

Anybody have a clue on what I'm doing wrong??

- The reason you can't adjust those settings is because the Sharp 85U actually goes into a 96Hz mode (4:4) when displaying 24fps material like BluRay movies. So you can't adjust the display settings that are only applied to to 30fps and 60fps material.

- The toslink output on the 85U will only pass Dolby Digital from the internal ATSC (OTA) tuner. All other sources will be downmixed to stereo. This is the same thing that happens in 99% of the TV's out there.

If you want true surround (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.) you have to connect the HDMI cable to the receiver or use an optical cable for each device to the receiver. The TV isn't meant to be used as a switching device.

First off, THANK YOU to all for the great information in this thread. I have learned SO much!

This is going to be my first LCD. I have to choose between the LC52D85U and the LC52E77UN. Price is not a factor. My company has a performance recognition program and has offered me my choice of the two. I was JUST about to pull the string on the 85U (much more information available online), but after reading the thread on the 77UN, I'm not sure.

If YOU had the choice and price was no object, what would you do?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, input, etc. I sincerely appreciate it!

BTW, the room (where the TV will be) has a window directly behind the couch that faces the TV. I read that a member noted less glare on the 85U. Input? Thanks!

Guys,

I am considering buying the 52D85U because my wife insists that I not spend the extra money on the Samsung I really want...

Anyway, I am scared to death of this banding issue - I have seen the YouTube videos of different Sharp set's banding issues and I do NOT want to have to deal with that. It would frustrate me beyond all measure.

Are you guys experiencing this? If so, does Sharp do something about it or is it just a Sharp thing?

Concerned,

Dwaine

Have had this set for 2 months now.My first one of these would not turn on so I took it back to BB and got another one.It is a really nice set and the prices are coming down.
I hear you, but there are apparently a lot of people who have this banding issue... I just don't think I can take the chance...

I think I am going to bite the bullet and get the Samsung LN52B530.

Okay, I will ask it this way...

Those of you who have dealt with banding, was it out of box or did it happen over time?
I just got the 85U from best buy over the weekend.
The picture looks ok in SD...waiting for HD cable box.

Meanwhile, I had a issue with fixing the stand to the TV. The holes are not lining up and BB is not interested to helping me out anymore....should have gotten their free delivery...but had to wait atleast 2 weeks for it.

Anyone here ran into that issue of holes in the TV stand not lining up with the TV.

- I don't know of any posters who had the banding happen over time. It's usually evident right away. I've had my set for a few months now and I haven't had any issues.

I bought MY LC52D85U Saturday after putting my receiver through my LC52D64U.
I haven't noticed any banding but have noticed the dark green line on the side, sometimes on the left sometimes on the right, and it comes and goes but only in DOT TO DOT on the high def channels.

Will try calibrating tonight with the CNET settings

- Do you have specific channels that this happens with or is it random? When you use dot-to-dot mode, you do see closed captioning static on SD channels, but you shouldn't have any issues with HD channels. I know that I have a thin white line on Palladia, but it's the only channel I see the line on.

Also check other devices, like BluRay, etc. But my guess would be that it's the channel.

I noticed on TNT this morning and it was on both sides, the other day it was on one side.
Its Random on some HD channels in Dot to Dot but I will take a closer look and track the channels, to look for a pattern.

It does not do it on DVD's or Blu Ray

NOTE: I used the calibration settings from CNET and the picture is extremely accurate in dim light viewing.
My DVD's look so much better now, they looked good before but awesome now. Started watching heroes (Backup copy) and they look fantastic...although I was a bit unimpressed with the quality of the Blu Ray disc (Dark Knight), although that was before the calibration,

I have my HDM's (Direct TV, Blu Ray) running to the TV then an optical to my receiver (no HDMi's on receiver) and it seems fine...how do I know if its down mixing...all speakers seem fine.
I was told to do it this way at Best Buy for my particular receiver.

In case you all haven't seen it, Sharp just released a new firmware update (Version Version U0903061, dated 7/16/09) for the LCxxD85u. Available on Sharp's website (sorry, I can't post the url, since I just joined the forum).
I haven't tried the new firmware yet, but hope to tonight.

Let us know how the firmware goes, I'm also intrigued on updating my 46" but I'm too scared
