Closed caption/Subtitles question re DVD players

I asked several questions in a similar thread and learned from you guys that Closed Captions are analog and won't pass through via a HDMI hookup. Anyone know why this has been ignored? A deliberate attempt to force some users over to Blu-Ray? I cannot afford to do that, and anyway a good upscaling solution with my medium sized 1080P screen is satisfactory. But I really miss the closed captions.

Any workaround to this? Some discs have subtitles in different languages but I think it's less than 40-50% of all content, and some of the most difficult to understand stuff doesn't have them. I am viewing dialogue-intense materail, not much action stuff, and it's more critical to know what every nuance is.

My words are not clear: I know that some discs have subtitles and that those will pass through as they are imbedded in the program material somehow, but the captions are what I am asking about. Wondering if there is some kind of workaround or any particular player that will combine these through to the upscaled images.

Hi

Who told you that? I run a HDMI hookup from my Oppo 983 to my projector and I certainely have no problems in showing subtitles over HDMI.

I even use subs for my DivX, fact is, you can even stream them from your computer through Tversity wirelessly to a PS3 which then is also is hooked up via HDMI.

So I have no problems with subs an HDMI.

Cheers

Closed Captioning will only pass over an analog signal at 480i only. This is due to Closed Captioning being an analog signal which is contained on horizontal line 22. This signal is received and processed by your display.

Subtitles, such as Subtitles for the Hearing Impaired, will work over any connection, at any resolution. The reason for this is that Subtitles are decoded by the DVD player and inserted into the film. There is no transmission or decoding required at the receiving end.

The industry just dropped the ball. The CC would have to be reencoded by the player for digital display. It is a shame because all that CC work is now more or less lost.

This topic comes up from time to time and someone claimed there are players that do the reencoding, but I am not familiar with them.

The only workaround I know of is to use a 480i analog connection for those titles.

IIRC, many DVD Recorders are designed with internal Closed Captioning decoding.

I have a Philips DVD/HDD recorder. Have had mixed results with Closed captioning. Have noticed if I use one of my new digital ATSC converters with a VHS (presume also with the DVR unit) recorder that I can overlay the broadcast captions on the tape, this is ok if I'm recording TV material but much of my viewing is done on commercial DVDs and rips and the CCs on those, where applicable, don't seem to pass through as we've already discussed. This is really a shame, and I suspect it is an example of deregulation at gov't level not serving the public very well.
