Are LCD's in Dark Rooms Really That Bad? LG52PG70

I recent got the LP 50PG60 Plasma as a replacement for a broken DLP. I've tried using break in dvd's for over 200 hours of use and the IR on it is still very much present and HORRIBLE. That being said, I have 3 days to decide if I want to stay with it or trade it in for the LG52PG70. My main concern with making this trade though is that this tv will be used in a dim/dark room. If anyone knows anything about the tv, great, but the main purpose of this topic is to get some real feelings on if LCD's are really that bad in dark rooms.

Well, depends on your standards for "bad". Coming from CRTs, I definitely think so (especially with that LG, which uses an IPS-type panel, which has the disadvantage of sub-par black levels), but unfortunately that's one of the things you have to deal with if you don't want to go the high end plasma or local dimming route.

here is my Samsung 650 compared to my old CRT with a long exposure shot: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9759/crtlcdsx6.jpg

Wow, well that helped me a lot dude. I'll deal with a bit of IR if the rest of the two hour movie gives me better levels and PQ.

Backlight controls can really help in a situation like this. Still, it's a "fact of life" with the LCD technology. VA (mostly Samsung) panels do have some advantages with black levels while still being good for colors and viewing angles.

I still hang onto a NEC CRT.

If OLED ever makes it to market at reasonable prices, the LCDs and maybe even the plasmas are going to look like dinosaurs.

To be fair, if you put his LG plasma besides that, it would not look any better.

The biggest issue with LCD's nightime performance is the blue glow, and screen uniformity.

During the day, they look fantastic (Aside from the slight dip in contrast off axis, but this does vary). You could always add a few 6500k ideal lumes to your LCD. While not a concrete solution, it will most certainly help.

EDIT: I honestly think that if the blacks turned gray, instead of blue/purple, that people would be a bit happier.
