Upgrade Optoma H79 to Sony HW10???

I'm also trying to draw very similar comparisons as you. I have the H78. I sit close to the screen and after upgrading my older tvs in other rooms to 1080p I now notice the screendoor...it isn't bad but its there.

I've seen the higher models of the Sony on display at Best Buy Magnolia and another local chain..but it's nearly impossible to draw good conclusions. I know these new SXRD projectors are vastly superior but they are so poorly setup (a lot of ambient light, some using a split component signal, etc) that they don't look any better than my Optoma at home in the dark.

I'm in similar place, for me its Sony or JVC HD1.
Quietness of Sony is a big plus, as most others compared to H79 are louder.

Why not buy a HW10 from a online seller with an excellent return policy? All you would risk is shipping to have your own in home comparison.

That's what I did. I bought a HW10 and AE3000. Gave them both some screen time and I will be keeping the HW10.

While both projectors needed a final calibration, the AE3000 more so than the HW10, their factory setup was good enough to judge their performance capabilities.

I had been using a Sony HS51A for the past 2 years and 9 months. I always missed the DLP look of the HT1000 I owned previously. The HW10 restores everything I was missing and more.

The Sony HW10 is available at some Best Buy stores. You might inquire if they would wave the restocking fee and let you test the HW10. That's what my Best Buy did, let me have the HW10 to test. I ended up returning the HW10 so I could buy it from Jason here at AVS.

It depends on how much tolerance you have for panel uniformity or convergence errors.

I have little tolerance for either, so the HW10 represents the best value for me. The new Epson Pro LCDs may be different since someone posted they will cherry pick the panels for the Pro line. It's not clear what criteria they use when segregating panels, so we will have to see how the Cinema Pro 7100 and 7500UB compare to their non-Pro siblings.

That being the case, you might also check out the Panasonic AE3000 and Epson 6500.

Have you thought about the Benq 20000. Same DLP look but better blacks than the H79. Not sure about the noise though

The HW10 is on my short list. I prefer the look of LCOS projectors over LCD ones. But I haven't gotten a chance to see the newer LCD projectors. Byte has a really good suggestion about "kicking the tires" with a local BB Magnolia unit.

Your English is just fine. Please keep us updated on your upgrade experience. Also...900 Euros for your H79 (in its US dollar equivalency) would be a great selling price here. I don't think I could get US $900 for my H78 with a spare new lamp.

That price for the HW10 is a LOT cheaper than what you can get it for in the US. If you do get it I'd be very interested in your comparisons since you and I have the same projector.

Do they want a second one? That's way more than I could sell mine for here. I'd upgrade in a flash if I could get that much for mine.

I upgraded from my H79 to a JVC RS1 some time back. What a difference, especially in color and contrast. I actually like the smoothness of the JVC machine vs. the "pop" that the DLP H79 had. Even better options available now. You will appreciate the difference. Needless to say, bulb life is fastly improved.... SJ

SJHT - my worry on HD1 is its a lot louder than H79.

I don't notice notice any noise from where my RS1 is positioned. In fact, I added an extra fan to try and improve the bulb life when I had my H79. Therefore, it is a LOT quieter! The blacks on the RS1 are like black ink. Contrast is 15,000:1. There is a more smoothness to the picture vs. the "pop" of a 1 chip DLP, but I actually prefer it. Good luck! SJ
