Need recommendation for a budget 2 channel setup

I need help adding better sound to my living room setup. Sources are a HD TiVo, a PS3 for blu-ray and MP4s, and music from an iPod or streamed via AirTunes. The space is an asymmetrical 600 sq ft modern loft with 11 ft ceilings.

I have a HK DPR 1001 with mid-level Polk 5.1 speakers sitting in my garage because my wife didn't like the speakers everywhere and the complexity of the A/V receiver. I also have some Athena AS-B1 bookshelf speakers in my garage.

Currently I use my Panasonic plasma's built-in speakers for TV/movies and a Klipsch iGroove HG for iPod/AirTunes.

I have a small budget and would like to stay under $500 but may be willing to spend a little more.

I have a mounted 50" flat screen over two of the entertainment shelves pictured below. I need to have the speakers sit on top of the shelves. Soundbars won't work as they are too long and the shelves are stacked with books.

I am looking for the best 2 channel sound I can afford and I don't need an upgrade path to 5.1 or better. A 2.1 speaker setup could work but the sub would have to be flat enough to fit under the shelves. My options seem to be:

1. A simple, slim integrated amplifier or receiver and use my Athenas. I'd like something under 3" tall that doesn't generate too much heat. I found the Rotel RA-04 online but I don't think they offer this in the US. This way I could also upgrade my speakers later on.

2. A high end ipod powered speaker/dock setup

3. Powered studio monitors

4. Also, if I add a sub it has to be slim enough to fit under the shelves.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I think your 3" requirement is a deal-killer. (And looking at the picture, I don't see why it's a requirement.) 5-6" would be closer to the norm, and you'd need another couple of inches of airspace above that.

Why not bring the HK receiver back in and put the $500 into some decent 3 way bookshelf speakers. Add a center speaker and you have decent enough sound for HT. It looks as if you may have room for a center speaker. There are many good sounding bookshelf speakers on the market, you just need to figure out how much volume you want for the space you need to fill and then start there.

As for the 'complexity' of the HK receiver, I think all thats required to operate it is knowing how to find the power button, volume control and on occasion, the source buttons.
This holds true on just about all receivers.

As mcnarus said, that 3" requirement is a tough one.
You say you want small, good sound, and not too much heat. How about you get one out of three? Thats about how it'll work.

As for heat, I have a 80mm 12v computer cooling fan that operates off an AC converter with a control circuit to slow it down, makes it less noisy, plugs into my HK AVR520 on the switched AC plug. That keeps it very cool. It is easy to set up and is quiet unless there is nothing playing. I've mounted it to suck the hot air out of the entertainment center compartment where the 520 is kept. Works very well. You just need air space the fan can draw from, in my case there is a glass door that does not fit tight allowing cool air to pass over the receiver.

YMMV.

Thanks for the suggestions. I set up my HK receiver with my Athena's and solved the complexity issue by routing the sound through my TV. This way my wife can use the TV speakers without having to turn on the receiver if she wants.

My wife is ok with the setup but she hates the boxy speakes sitting on top of the shelf. The original pic was from a catalog. I took a pic of our actual place to help you visulalize (below). So now I have a couple of more questions.

1. I can put the Athenas on the floor on a small stand that tilts them up but doesn't add much height.

2. I can look at upgrading to a more modern looking bookshelf like the minipods and put them on the shelf.

3. I can look at some small/narrow floor standing speakers but I'm guessing the bass output won't be much better than bookshelf speakers.

Also, where might I find a freestanding spacer shelf so my TiVo can sit over my receiver. I'm looking for something simple - like a thin metal shelf that looks like a U bolt from the front.

And where can a get the cooling fan with an AC plug?

Thanks!

I don't know of a place that sells a fan with an AC plug. You'll have to wire up your own setup. I use an 80mm fan, but if you have the room a 120mm fan running very slow may be quieter than the 80mm. I can't hear it at all unless there is nothing playing when the receiver is on.

You can get an AC adapter from Radio Shack that has an adjustable voltage control. One like this:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2552560

This will negate your needing the control circuitry separately. Just wire the fan to the DC output line of the adapter, plug the adapter to the back of your HK receiver in the switched plug and figure out how to mount the fan in such a manner so it pulls the hot air off the top of the receiver. Next adjust the voltage to make the fan quiet. It doesn't need to move much air to be effective.
It does a great job of keeping my HK AVR520 nice and cool and may prolong its life by a few years. It puts out quite a bit of heat.

Take your wife speaker shopping with you. You might find something you both like. Or she might say get whatever you want. Either way you win.

If you do decide to upgrade to a nicer book self speaker you may want to look at the Usher S-520. Very well reviewed for their sound and finish. The pair I bought are gloss white and would look quite good with your shelving. I had also been using Athenas (B2.2) in my two channel system. All I can say is these were a huge upgrade.
