Time to ask the pros

Alright I have been fixing up a 1985 Zenith Projection Monitor Pv800p.
It's probably the first projector they made.

At this point the projector is working. I could probably still use a new blue and red tube. But it is working just fine for now.

My question to you guys is.....

How do I go about setting this bad boy up.

I have no service manual. But have an idea of how this projector is adjusted.
I know how to do. Horiz and Vert position
Focus, intesity, and there is one more control....it's sorta like the horizontal position. But it stretches it....from side to side....It's hard to explain.
Also I figured out a way to adjust horiz size.

Theres DEFINATLEY more. But these are small vari resistors often only labelled with a R G or B for determining which tube it is affecting(actually all of the adjustments are labelled like this, but I just won't touch the smaller ones).

But how do I go about adjusting these. As you all know adjusting one single control can fix one problem but then makes 10 other problems apparent.
I know it involves covering one crt as you do the adjustements but I just don't know. I don't even know how far from the screen I should even have the projector for best results.

My hopes are that one of you who actually may have seen one of these working can tell me some general stuff. Like the screen distance!
Any help is greatley appreciated.

Well if what you say about the corners is true then I"ve been very close to having it set up properly. My only issue is the red. It is just not converged properly PERIOD. You can get the vertical straight then the horiz is off. (diagonal) and vice versa

Also the bottom of the screen is stretched. ALmost like it's swollen.
I'm not positive but I think this happened after I changed a capacitor somewhere, I'm not positive though. And if so I don't remember which one. Or even which board.
I'll be shotgunning that problem for the rest of this projectors life I bet.

I'll see how close I can get it then take some pictures and show you.

Oh and by the way I'm using a laptop with an av out to get a picture of a test screen showing.

Oh I wish I knew some one that would be giving one of these away. I'd take it in a second.

But yes I think I will stop fixing and just haul it out to my lake. Where I will play nintendo outside by the fire

For old nintendo games this projector rocks. Movies it's OK at best. 16 bit video games Awsome!.

Alrighty here. I have some questions about what to troubleshoot if any one feels like havin some fun.

The red is off. Green and blue seem to converge fine.
My questions are.
Could the red be off due to something other than the conergence board?

Or would it definatley be the convergence baord stretching or skewing the image?

And the last question is about the crt neck yoke adjustments(I think)
These are the rings on the crt neck. I moved one of these on the red crt just a hair. And I recently read that these control image position. So if I moved just one of these(theres two) just a hair, Maybe thats why I can't get the red converged across the whole screen...?

Another thing is the power supply. It buzzes/ticks. I replaced all the caps in there(the largest cap I replaced with one I had kickin around that may not be much better). And not much changed. I added a ground wire(3 prong plug from 2)And that helped to greatley reduce the sound. Is this normal though? at all?

Any input is greatley appreciated.

Oh and Curt. I think my vert pos pots are OK. The image doesn't seem to wander up or down after running the set, so thanks for the offer, but no Thanks.

P.S. Snap! I just found another lense adjustment for the corners! I can't beleive I didn't find it when I actually looked for them. I'll see how much this helps.

It's interesting in the picture it's much easier to see where the colours are off. Almost makes me not want to look.

I'd like to know where it is you find such good projectors for such a low price.?

I've been to curt palms web site and they are reasonably priced but not that cheap.

Awwww man

I turned it on today to watch a movie and the green was on super bright.
There was also a spot in the center that had no green(Looked like a mark on the wall)
There were some diagnol lines to at first. It still shows picture but it is not right.

I thought for a second it might be heater to cathode short please tell me its not

I still have some control over it's brightness but it get's bright very fast to say the least

Alright. After moving the projector around checking what could of happened the green problem sorted itself out. I was glad this happened.
As for the spot it looks like a peice of dirt in the lense. It wasn't there before. I"m not sure how it slipped in either. I'm gonna try to blow it out or something.

I live in Manitoba Winnipeg

The tube has a burn in the front. Making the black spot. I wanna punch something. All my hard work just gone. It still works but the spot is noticable and right in the middle. And it was a brand new tube.

I can't even beleive...

I wish I could have a projector for free!
I can't find any internet listings here for projectors. No one seems to have them. And those that do probably wont let them go. At least not for cheap.
Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

Ohhh well.

It's still very usable. There is just a small (ALmost like the cursor from a computer..smaller though) spot with no green on the screen. It's right in the middle so it's rather noticible on white screens and what not.


But for my original plan of just playing nintendo. It's still a beauty

General question here. I've heard many bad stories about running projectors too far away from the screen. Causing faster phosphor burning.

So is too close acceptable...? I am wondering because I have a smaller space I would like to set up this projector and I am wondering if anything bad mightl happen other than a generally smaller screen??

Alright No issues with that smaller space thing. It was the same distance as I had it set up before.

I got the projector ceiling mounted now and the convergence for some reason fixed itself right up.

The only thing is the power supply. It buzzes....It buzzes more when the screen has lots of reds or whites.

It buzzes less when there in no red or whites.

Any one ever had a similar issue of any sort.
How was it resolved...? Was it the power supply or something to do with the red tubes electronics.
