PS3 + Sony STR-DG800 = Linear PCM?

Hi Everyone,

I have a PS3 and a (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=STRDG800 and have read that the best way to hear BluRay DVD's is using Linear PCM (as opposed to DD/DTS set-up in the PS3).

The problem I think is that although my receiver has an input for HDMI for the DVD (PS3), it also requires an optical input - the HDMI's are just pass-thru's.

I don't believe I can hear the Dolby True HD with this receiver - is this correct? Sorry is this seems like a novice question and I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for any advice.

You're correct, the receiver that you have is HDMI passthrough, meaning you need to use optical for the audio. Unfortunately, you need HDMI for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA HD. The best you'll get over optical is Dolby Digital or DTS.

Set your PS3 to bitstream.

Thank you for the quick reply and confirming what I thought. Unfortunately I cannot afford a new receiver right now.

Just curious, is there a noticable difference?

Thanks again.

- It depends on your speakers and setup. The lossless codecs usually have better clarity and dynamic range. I think there is a noticeable difference, but I have a lot of friends that have listened to my setup who haven't noticed any difference.

The largest difference I've seen is on the rear channels - they are far more "alive" than on normal tracks.
