SD dvd PQ: PS3 vs. Samsung 2550 vs. Panasonic BD35/55 vs. Oppo 983/981 vs. Tosh7990

Three sections/questions I'm hoping to get some help with...

All in regards to playing on a hidef display...

1. I'd love to get ratings on these players when it comes to SD dvd PQ:

(Scale of 1 to 10)

PS3:
Samsung 2550:
Panasonic BD35/55:
Oppo 983:
Oppo 981:

(And if anyone can provide screen captures or images or something of any/all of the above displaying the same SD dvd, that would be awesome!)

I will most likely be getting a Panasonic 50PZ800U hidef display...

2. Please also rate the first three above in regards to bluray PQ (if you know -- I also posted in the Bluray forum to ask about this though...).

3. I have a Toshiba SD-7990 SD dvd player (specs, which says it does 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p HDMI upscaling -- and also says it has the DCDi by Faroudja -- I don't know if that's just for deinterlacing or if that's actually the chipset?).

How will this rate in comparison to upscaling SD dvd to the players listed above? The Oppo 981's deinterlacing is listed as being done by the DCDi by Faroudja (but I don't know if the Toshiba actually has the Faroudja chipset).

Any help is appreciated? Thanks!

Well, the Oppo 983 is the best player availble to date. You can try Oppo players and return them for a refund if you don't like them. If you don't need Bluray, get the 983. Seems Samsung implementations of Reon are just so-so, but I have never used one of their Reon equipped players. The PS3 is a nice player for SD DVD.

My first decision would be do I need Bluray or not. If not, get a Oppo 983. If so, that narrows things down alot. Actually, all thre of those (PS3, Sammy, Panasonics) are supposed to be better than average for upconversion. Just cause Sammy's history, I'd remove them myself. The PS3 is a great machine and those new Panasonics seem to be excellent also. I'd probably remove the 981 and Sammy right away. The 981 is very good, but for a regular DVD player, the 983 is the better choice.

If your not in a hurry, perhaps wait for the Oppo Blu player. Should have the same SD DVD performance as the 983. If I was shopping, it would be at the top of my list, depending on price, which is just rumors right now.

So now you have the PS3, Samsung, Panasonic and soon to be released Oppo perhaps. (Probably will be a little expensive though.)

The Oppo will have the best upconverting on a Blu player to date, but it should also be a bit more than the others you have listed. If your willing to spend the $500-700 (my guess) than perhaps wait for the Oppo. ALso, for my own personal reasons I'd throw out the Samsung player. I just don't trust their reliability. They have been great for many however and use a very good processing chip which means excellent upconversion. Again if this were me, it is now down to the PS3 and Panasonic players. Do you want a game machine or a stand alone Blu player? Both are very highly regarded players and both have better than average upconversion.

Hope that helped any...

Hmm, I am interested in how people feel about this. Specifically, since the Samsung can be bought new for about $200 cheaper than the Oppo now.

How do people feel about the Standard Def quality of the upconversion on the Oppo vs the Samsung? ABT vs. Reon?

And is the Oppo worth $200.00 more?

Hi.

I have the XE-1 (XA-2 equivalent) which has the Reon chip and I also own the Oppo 983 with the ABT chip.

The Oppo is the better machine for SD PQ.

The Oppo 981 would be similar to the Toshiba, I would think, as it also uses the Faroudja chip.

If you care about money, no it is not worth $200 more. If money is no concern, I say get the Oppo. I thought my Reon player (Onkyo HD805) was about 95% as good as the Oppo.

Plus you get Bluray with the Samsung.

Since I own both a BD-P2500 and an DV983H I can comment on sd playback-the 983 has a very clean image while the 2500 has slightly better noise reduction+it can do bluray-don't belive the crap about the 2500 having an inferior implementation of the Reon HQV chip-it doesn't-the ABT chip in the 983 also does an excellent job-I think in the end it comes down to personnel preferences-I like both.

Many have stated the earlier Sammy's weren't as good as other Reon equipped players for SD DVD. I haven't heard that is the case with the last batch of Sammy units. I wish I had a 1200/1400 to compare myself, but I don't and there's no way I'm going to track one down just to know how well they implement Reon. People say the same with some of Onkyo's earlier Reon equipped AVR's. I'm not about to buy one just to try it out, I'm sure a less that perfect Reon implementation is still alot better than most other average chips out there.

The name on the chip doesn't matter if the implementation is poor.

I did have both a BD-P1200 and a BD-UP5000 (both Reon HQV equipped) at different times and the BD-P2550/2500's pq upconverting dvds is as good as either of the other 2 units.
