Why would I be stuck with an LCD? What is wrong with them?

LCD are very nice TV's.
You should be ok.
Just don't ever watch a top-end Plasma and you won't know what you are missing.
LCD's have improved greatly in the past few years.

It really depends on what kind of a viewer you are.

IF Superbrightness is a really big deal for you then LCD might be the better choice.
Just remember, you will be losing alot for that extra brightness (that you probably won't be using anyway if you have your set calibrated or like an accurate picture).
Since LCD was created for text based displays (like computer screens, digital watches, etc) it doesn't perform as well as plasma or CRT with motion. So if you are planning on watching alot of movies or doing alot of gaming or watching alot of sports, then I would say try to steer clear of LCD.
LCD has a way to try to combat the bad motion performance like 120hz (which does not noticably stop motion blurring), and they also use frame interpolation. Frame interpolation is basically adding a fake frame in between the original ones.
The fake frame is a combination of the before and after frame. The important thing to remember is that this frame does not exist in the source/movie. Therefore it will change the content from its original state making the film that a $100,000 movie camera made look like a home movie or soap opera.

Plasma also has better contrast. But some LCD's (the top end ones) are getting very good with blacks by creating add-ons like led backlighting, etc. This helps the LCD's have better blacks while there is a totally black screen or a larger area of the screen with all black.

But when it comes to contrast images with blacks and whites right next to each other ( like with most everything you will be watching), the LED backlighting doesn't do too well. Part of the backlighting for the lighted areas bleeds over into the black areas making them appear grey and unattractive. This is called blooming.

Am I saying that all plasmas are better than all LCD's? no way.
I would rather have a samsung 950 or Sony XBR8 LCD than some of the Plasmas out there.
But when it comes to the High end plasmas, LCD has a ways to go before it will equal, much less outclass a high end plasma.

Do some price searches on the Panasonic 42PZ80. There are some really good deals on this model right now (well below your target price) and it is a very nice TV from a top tier manufacturer.
