DVR external hard drive problem

I recently switched cable TV providers and got a new DVR in the process. My old DVR was a Pace TDC779X. I had a LaCie 500G hard drive hooked up to it with a SATA cable to store movies. My new unit is a Motorola DCT6416 III.

Before I hooked the drive up to my Motorola, I figured I'd reformat it. But when I tried to connect the LaCie to my Windows XP computer via USB or firewire, my computer wouldn't recognize or mount the drive. What's up ... how can I re-use this hard drive with the new box?

You can't. The Motorolas won't use any external hard disk. Their eSATA ports aren't active, and (at least with the firmware they're running at present) they don't use more than 160 GB of storage. Motorola's been promising a firmware update that will enable external storage, but haven't delivered, and at this point there's no way to know when it'll actually occur.

Geez ... that sucks. Guess I'm stuck with 160GB ... thanks for the quick response. As to the LaCie hard drive, any idea why my computer won't recognize it? Did the Pace box somehow reformat it to make the drive unrecognizable ... hate to throw it out if I could reformat it and use it with the computer ...

Most probably it repartitioned it with a partition type Windows doesn't like/know. Look for the "Disk Management" panel; you should be able to delete the partition(s) on the disk and make a new FAT32 or NTFS partition, which you can then format and use for data storage again. (Don't know exactly where it is in XP; I use Mac and Linux. )

Thanks again, demonfoo ... I'll see what I can see. I think I need to use some sort of disk utility, though, 'cause Windows won't even mount the thing so that I can look at it ... appreciate the help.

Try right-clicking on my computer and selecting "manage" then select disk management. You should see all drives there, even if they aren't formatted in a partition style that windows will see. Then you fix it from there. I have done this numerous times when a harddrive was erased by a data-clearing utility, and then I wanted to use it in an external enclosure for backup purposes.

Great little free program that will do the trick.

Hang in there. Motorola demo'd external storage capability at the May 08 cable show....so it makes sense to think they have it out before the next show
