Yet Another Receiver Recommendation Thread

I've currently got a Denon AVR-1906 and would like to upgrade to HDMI.

I will be running:

-Xbox 360
-Philips 5960 DVD player
-Motorola QIP6416-2 cable box

and will be powering:

-Revel F12s
-Revel C12

.edit My display is a Samsung A950.

I would like for the receiver to last me a number of years and for my budget to not exceed $750 unless absolutely necessary (~$500 would be the sweet spot).

I now leave myself at the mercy of the AVS gods

Thanks!!

,edit forgot to mention that I'll be making this a 5.1 or 7.1 eventually

I've asked a similar question and based on responses and research I'm not looking at either the Denon 1909 or Onkyo 706. I'm mostly looking at the Denon due to Audyssey Multi-EQ and Audyssey Dynamic Volume features.

These receivers are right at or slightly below $500 if you look around.

thx for the reply - anyone else have any opinions?

I'm going through the same process myself. I have an old Yamaha receiver that I want to replace for HDMI and advanced codec support.
Right now, I'm bouncing between the Yamaha 663 and the Denon 1909/789 with me leaning towards the Denon. Although I really like Yamaha gear, I find myself being called by the Audyssey sirens. That said, I'm having trouble pulling the $500 trigger on the Denon when the Yamaha can be had for $350.
So, I'm still in research mode and hoping for a super deal on the Denon.

Mitch

going to bump this for people in similar situations.. the denon 1909 for ~$500 is looking like the frontrunner so far.

would it make more sense in terms of future proofing to go with something like the AVR-2809CI for the ability to throw an amp in the mix down the road?

think it'd be worth the extra ~$350 or so?

thanks!

Too many factors, I think, to offer advice -

* How rich are you
* How large is your room and how far are speakers from you
* How loud do you like it
* What speakers do you have, or are planning on buying

* Not rich at all, but not living paycheck to paycheck
* Room is roughly 11x17, speakers ~10ft away
* I like it loud, but not CRAZY loud
* Will have a pair of Revel F12s and a Revel C12 center - plan on making it at least 5.1 later on

I'm in the same situation also. I have a pairs of Polk M70 speakers coming this week. I live in a 1 bedroom condo currently, but will be moving to a house in a couple months. I have 40" XBR and 60GB PS3. I'm trying to decide if I should go with Denon 1909, 2309, 2809, or a Pioneer Elite VSX-01TXH or VSX-03.

What's the sensitivity on those Revels?

90 is pretty good. They may not need a lot of amp power.

so would you go with the 1909?

The 1909 seems nice. Just make sure it has enough HDMI inputs.

3 HDMI inputs, 1 output.

So that'd let me use the cable box, dvd player and xbox without any issues.

the only thing that concerns me for now is the inabillity to add an amp down the road should i need it.

otherwise i think i might just pull the trigger on the 1909.

can anyone push me one way or the other between the denon 1909 and 2809?

after everything described in this thread, would the extra $300 for the 2809 give me any discernible advantages over the 1909?

just trying not to make an impulse purchase here

thanks!

guess you guys are sick of this thread by now(), so i'm just going to ask a simple question:

can the 1909 power a pair of Revel F12s, C12 center and M12 rears at a somewhat loud volume?

i can pull any specs you guys would need, but i can't make proper use of them as i am still learning.

thankkks

Define somewhat loud? 90 dB? 100 dB?

90 dB, no worries. Even 95 dB is not out of the question.

Not sure how I can put it in normal terms.. loud enough to be immersed but not too loud as to where my ears bleed?

I guess the important question would be why I might need any amp down the road in order get the most out of my setup?

If I can skirt by with the cheaper receiver now and be able to get 5.1 up to a decent clean volume then I think I'll be ok!

Buy the 1909 or 2309. When you move and get ready to buy an amp down the road then you'll have a reason to upgrade to the latest and greatest receiver as well.

do you know the main differences between the 1909 and 2309 off the top of your head?
Denon has a compare feature on their site.

90w Vs 100w per ch
3HDMI Vs 4

I'm sure there is probably a few more differences.

I too am currently looking to upgrade and am looking at a few of the receivers in this thread. Here is some info I have gathered. Does anyone have any suggestions or is any of my data incorrect?

I think I need to rule out the Yamaha due to only 2 HDMI inputs. I would like to only use one cable for my components, which means I need one that is a repeater and not a switcher...correct? Also, how important is it to have the Audyssey features?

Denon AVR-1909: 90w*7, Faroudja DCDi(1080P), Audyssey MultEQ, Audyssey Dynamic Volume, Audyssey Dynamic EQ, HDMI switcher (3/1, 1080p)

HK 254: 50w*7, Faroudja DCDi(1080P), HDMI repeater (3/1, 1080p)

Onkyo 606: 90w*7, Faroujda DCDi Edge(1080i), Audyssey 2EQ, Audyssey Dynamic EQ, HDMI repeater (4/1, 1080p)

Sony DG920: 110w*7, HDMI repeater (4/1, 1080p), upscale to 1080p

Yamaha 663: 95w*7, Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit DACs, HDMI switcher (2/1, 1080P)

Pioneer 1018: 130w*7, upscale to 1080p, HDMI (3/1) Switcher or Repeater???

What is the difference between a switcher and a repeater?
There is a good chance that I am wrong. But doesn't a HDMI switcher send the audio and video to the HDMI output and bypass the receiver, as in, you need to run a seperate audio cable to your receiver. If it says repeater, then you can decode the audio on your receiver and then send the video to your TV, thus only needing to use a HDMI cable for your equipment. I saw a few post regarding the Denon that said you need to run a seperate audio cable to it from your DVD player, PS3, etc.

Even with that, I think I am starting to lean towards to Denon even with the extra wiring. The audyssey functions just sound too cool.

Let me help you out on that one. This is a direct copy and paste from the 1018 brochure on Pioneer's website:

HDMI A/V Repeater (3 Assignable in/1 out)
