Can I use this for cable tv audio output as well?

I'm not clear whether I can use the optical In to connect my cable box to this set...

Samsung HT-A100

even if I'm already using the HDMI output on my cable box to my tv. Safe to assume that the cable box will pass audio through the hdmi and optical cables? And that that the Samung set will play the audio while watch regular tv?

Sorry for the newb questions - I guess I assumed I could only use it for DVD playback

My Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box will output audio over either HDMI or optical but not at the same time. I would connect the cable box to the TV with HDMI and connect the cable box to the Samsung HT-A100 with the optical. Change setting on the cable box to dolby digital or whatever the setting is on your cable box.
