I'm an audiovisual newbie who's been researching like crazy -- but I'm still not sure what audio inputs I need where to reach my goals. I'm buying new everything.
Plan to get Samsung LN52A630 52" LCD TV. Goals: decently rich dialogue & sound (I don't care about big crashing bass) & the ability to have the sound system play sound from (a) the FIOS DVR box; (b) a 1080p upconverting multiregion DVD player (Philips DVP 5990 or 5992) ; and ideally (c) a Blu-Ray player now or later (say Sony BDP S 350). I watch mainly TV (lots of talking heads) and TV shows on DVD. I want to be able to watch Region 2 DVDs. I'm not an demanding audio or video consumer, having never had good-quality stuff before. I do want convenience & ease of use.
A 5.1 system is out because of the room's configuration - so I'm looking at 2.1 or 3.1 setups.
For sound, I'm considering
* 2.1 HTIB Samsung HT-X710T -- (Built-in DVD non-multiregion DVD player. No HDMI in. 1 optical digital audio in. 1 stereo audio in.)
or
* 3.1 setup with Yamaha RXV463 receiver - (2 HDMI in. 2 optical digital audio in. 1 coaxial digital audio in.) The BB HT consultant recommended pairing this with 2 Polk TSI100B bookshelf speakers, a Polk CS10B center speaker, and a Polk PSW10 subwoofer.
The Samsung TV has 3 HDMI in.
I definitely want the sound on TV shows to be good. Am I right that if I get the Samsung HTIB, with no HDMI in, and use up the optical digital audio in for the FIOS to the HTIB, I'll have to hook up any extra (non-built-in) DVD player(s) to the HDMI on the TV and will only hear DVDs through the TV's built-in speakers?
How many components (FIOS, multiregion DVD player, Blu-Ray player, etc.) can I get to come through the sound system's speakers if I get the Yamaha? Does each component only use one audio input (among the HDMI, optical digital, coax digital options), or do some use more than one?
The Yamaha setup is more than I want to spend (about $900 compared to $500) . . . but I'm concerned that the Samsung would mean no ability to get good sound from anything other than the TV and the Sammy's built-in DVD. Could I maybe leave out the center speaker with the Yamaha receiver, & just go 2.1? I sit about 10-11' in front of the TV, and the side speakers will be going one on each side right beside the TV.
Many thanks for any advice.
