Where to buy Panny AX200U or Epson HC720 or Optoma HD65 in Toronto, Canada?

Hi everyone!

I've been doing research on a low-cost 720p PJ to act as a 2nd TV in my home.
Will only be throwing less than 15feet onto a wall, so ..

I've come down to these three: (in order of preference)

Epson HC720
Panny AX200U
Optoma HD65

Hoping to find one on sale during boxing day for like $799?
That would be fantastic!
(just got married, not much $$ floating around)

However, I cannot find anywhere in the Toronto area that sells any of them.
Mind you, I've only searched the FutureShop, BestBuy, Costco.ca, some computer online stores ...

Really blind as to where else to look ..
Could someone give me some pointers, please?
Even online retailers that will ship to Toronto?
Or anywhere around that GTA that might have them in store, but doesn't have a online store, i won't mind driving over and taking a peek.

Oh, and of course, any comments as to my 3 choices above is greatly appreciated also!

Thank you in advance for your time.

Are you a C*stc0 member? They carry both HC720 and HD65 (HD640). Sometimes - as in now - they are out of stock on both.

Oh! is the HD640 = HD65?
I know that the C-store usually have funny model# for the same items.

Good to know that they carry it!
will have to keep peeking at their inventory!

Thx!

Yea, go pick it up at the store. No wait time. Plus, you get a 92" Panoview screen for free. If you watch during the day time, I recommend getting the Greywolf 2 screen. Not all stores carry it. If you're in the GTA, then the Heartland store in Missisauga has Greywolf II, all other stores I know of has the matte white.

Najeeb Kahn, a memeber here, carries all 3 I think. He's located in Scarborough. I have had many dealings with him and he's a great guy to work with. One advantage is you can pick up your pj from his Scarborough location, so no shipping charge.

http://www.spectreaudio.com

Richard at Quebec Acoustics is highly thought of here, and also carries all 3 brands. I haven't purchased from him myself, but many here have reported that he's great to deal with. The advantage here is no PST.

http://www.quebecacoustic.com

I doubt you'd find any of those three below $1k CDN, even on Boxing Day, however, the new Epson HC700 is listed on the QA site for MSRP $899.

No self respecting projector lover should buy that crap. It's backup at best. For a bit more money, there are far better alternatives.
eightninesuited ... did you read the original post? The OP is using it as a 2nd TV, he's not setting up a dedicated theatre. The HC700 may fit his purpose as well or better than any of the others.

Hehe, it is true, it is my 2nd TV.

If you are curious, it is mostly for my wife, so i can project her "Lipstick Jungle" onto the wall beside our plasma TV, so she can watch her own stuff, while I go crazy on the Xbox360.

I am very curious about the HC700 as well.
How "sub-par" would it be?

as this is a 2nd TV, and a less perceptive individual (aka wife) watching,
the cheaper the better.

I've already missed a Black-Friday sale on a HD70 for $700Cdn at NC*X,
simply because I didn't have enough time to do "research" before the sale.
Would that HD70 at $700Cdn be a good price?
(it's not a refurb!)

Also, what do you think of a refurb Optoma HD65?
with a free screen, it's $699 ...

Thx for all your inputs!!

The HD65/70 would give you better contrast / blacks in a lights out enviornment for watching movies. The HC700 would be better in a low or medium ambient light enviornment where higher contrast is negated by ambient light because it is considerably brighter.

All 3 would work well on a wall with some ambient light if you kept the image to around 80 - 90".

The HD65/70 are DLP, so they would probably appear slightly 'sharper' than the HC700's LCD panels ( In my experience, I have both low end DLP and LCD projectors ). Being DLP, there's also a possibility you or your wife might see the Rainbow Effect on the two Optomas. I have a Mits HD1000 ( similar to the HD70 ) that I can easily see rainbows on. Some don't see them at all, others see them and it doesn't bother them ( like me ), and some get headaches ( smallest percentage ).

The HC700 is a cross-over business / entertainment projector. The HD70/65 are home theatre projectors.

The HC700 is shorter throw, meaning a bigger picture from the same lens to wall distance.

I don't think there are any reviews for the HC700 out yet, as it's brand new. There are plenty for the HD70/65.

All 3 have about the same placement flexibility ( 1.2x zoom, no lens shift ).

OH! I went to my nearby C0$tc0 today, and indeedly saw the HD640 with a 92" screen!
Alas, no Grey screen, will have to make a trip to Heartland.

I'm going to throw the image about 10' max to a wall ..
not even sure if it will fill the full 92"!
So, eight* mentioned that Grey color screen is better, huh? is that like a "silver" color?
more reflective?
Daytime viewing? I guess .. during weekends or in summer when it stays bright well into the 8-9PM...
Otherwise, Matte white is OK?
I usually have the window blinds closed, so i guess "low" ambient light environment.

Did someone say that they also suppose to have the Epson HC720 in stock also?
Does it come with a 92" screen, too?

Reason: my wife thinks the HC720 looks sexier.
:P

Thx for all your suggestions!

A new HD70 at $699can would be a good price. Is NCIX still offering that deal?

Yes, unfortunately, that deal is gone.
It was a Black-Friday deal, and only 5 units were available!

Mmm .. just got a quote from Spectre ..
he is recommending the Mitsubishi HC1600 ...
would this be a better choice than the HD65 and HC720?

Price is around the same as the HD65, but w/o the 92" screen...

Thx!

I bought a Epson HC720 from Richard at Quebec Acoustics (I live in Ontario), and the process went painlessly. I believe I bought it in March 2008, I installed it last Sunday

Carpet went in tonight... can't wait to get home.

I would pick the HD65 anyday over the HC1600. The HC1600 will be a lot quieter though.

Yeah, they have a Refurbed HD65 + (refurbed) 92" screen for $599!!!

What are the general opinions on Refurbed PJ's?? ...

I guess I won't mind if the refurbed PJ's have a *new* bulb at least ...
Wonder if they do ..

Kor770...I am not sure if I'd feel comfortable buying a refurb item....what do they offer for warranty? Sometime trying to save a few dollars can end up being a real pain in the a$$.

I have bought various gears from Quebec Acoustic and I highly encourage anyone to give them a shout and see what they can offer you. Richard is EXTREMELY professional, quick to reply to messages and provide quote and the goods are delivered very fast. I never buy unless I can walk into the store and pick the item in my hand...touchy kind of guy...but I tried Quebec Acoustic and I will buy everything I need from him from now on!

Hi everyone!

Thx for all your advices!

I ended up grabbing the Optoma HD65 from Costco with a GreyWolf II screen!
it's a great little projector indeed!

However, I'm seeing Rainbows ....
not that it causes me headaches, but it bugs me ...

Sooo .. now I'm in search for a Epson HC720.
Actually got a Epson EX70 (HC700 clone?) and is trying it at home.
color is not bad, but black level ..
i definitely can see a "dark grey" boarder where the light being projected.

Well, 2 weeks till boxing day .. here's hoping that I can find an Epson HC720 for less than $1000 :P

Do you still have the HD65? If so, go to Henry's, Blacks or any photo store. Pick up a ND2 filter and put it on the lens. Your rainbows will be nearly eliminated, and black levels will be Dark Chip 3 territory.

thanks for the tip... anyone else try this out yet? I wandered down to their store and bit the bullet figurin' that at that price, even if bulb last for only a year or two, the difference will pay for a replacement. Didn't get unit yet as they have to "order in" the rest of the package deal (screen and hdmi cable) but from the looks of the projector boxes that were on display, they don't look abused. The "sales guy says"... "refurbished" means that they weren't necessarily sold / used other than for displays or shelf stock.... but he didn't think that they did anything special in terms of bulb replacement... basically, checkout to see if they function and cosmetically, weren't beat up. Other "refurbished" components (ie. computers and such) on display seemed to be in good condition. Anyways, I will post more once I get everything and / or if no one else posts any other "followup".

Due to recommendations on the forum I just did the same thing. Although their price was the same as at avdeals.ca but without the free mount, HDMI cable and shipping, they were a bit more helpful on the phone, they threw in a mount because I asked and shipping was only $30. Plus it will ship tomorrow instead of a 2/3 week wait at the other place, and I need to get it by the end of the yr to get the rebate for $100 and free bulb.
well, did the comp canada deal... just hung the projector (replacement for a "gave away x1"). The deal seems to be pretty good. The projector doesn't look like it was ever use in terms of case, lens is clean like a new projector (no dust / smudges / etc). Of course, the bulb says 0 but that can be reset by "anyone". Anyways, hopefully it will work out... couldn't beat the price that was posted. The screen in the deal is a matt white and they throw in a 6 ft hdmi cable. I would say that the system might have been a "return" from the big "C" box store (I know our local store "switched" out their stock of HD65's for HD640's) as the manual although multilingual doesn't have any french and I suspect that perhaps the "nice people" with our "culture police" might have "suggested" that the package does meet our "high standards".

I'm very interested in the HD80. Does anyone know any retailer in Toronto who has it setup so I can see it and hear it for myself? The rainbows and fan noise is my concern.

honestly I wouldn't worry about it...rainbows are less of an issue because it has a 6x color wheel and as for noise...hard to say but on low lamp mode it won't be an issue...read some reviews....hard to pass up this projector when its way below cost of other 1080p projectors....

I saw rainbows on a LED DLP tv. I've never seen a 6x projector so I really can't say it eliminates it. Art from Projector Reviews says he saw it a few times on the HD80, and I'm probably more sensitive than him.
