Home Theatre Recomendation For a Very Open Apt. Layout - Pic of Layout included

Hey all,

This thread was originally in the HTIB forum about a year ago...But I realized i might be better off building a setup (Speakers/Receiver/Sub)

Now I dont have a huge budget...I'd like to spend under $1000 if possible...I dont need anything out of this world, but I would like something thats quite a bit better than the speakers coming out of my TV.

The problem I am having is I have a very open layout for my apt as you can see here:

Measurements for the main living area:
Living room measurement - 15" x 12"
Dining room - 9" x 7"
Kitchen - 10' x 9'

Do you guys have any suggestions?
I'm thinking about a 5.1 system...
Also, something with small satellite speakers would be great...I'm planning on mounting two onthe front wall where the TV is, throw two on stands for the rears, and the centre speaker I'm planning on mounting on the wall under the TV

On another note, I would even love to mount a single Sound Bar up on the wall under the TV - but from what I've read, I dont think the soundbar would work too well for my room layout - is that right pro's?

Any tips and suggestions would be great!
Thanks

Nick

Oh and I forgot to add the things I'm looking to hook up to the system:
PS3 - HDMI
Motorola HD PVR - HDMI
Wii - Component
All going into a 52" Samsung LNT52 something or rather...i forgot the exact model of my TV but its last years (2 years ago??) 52" 1080P Samsung LCD...

Agreed, don't try to do 7.1 in there.

With about $1000 to work with, I agree with picking out a seperate AVR, sub and speakers rather than a packaged HTIB. Given your equipment and budget, I'd recommend an Onkyo 606 AVR. With the rest of the budget, spend at least $200-250 on a sub (internet direct will be your best bang for the buck), and the remainder on speakers. I ususally recommend spending more on speakers, but since you want satellites, "dont need anything out of this world", and would benefit from HDMI switching, I've biased my recommendation accordingly.

It sounds like you're on the right track with speaker placement, just spread the left/right out enough to get good stereo seperation. I don't have much experience with really small satellite speakers, but the common recommendations on the speaker forum for bose-sized sats with better SQ are Gallo and Orb. Hsu has a package in your price range. I can vouch for their subs, but haven't heard the 'Ventriloquist' system.

Agreed, soundbars like the Yamaha need closed rectangular rooms to work properly. It sounds like you've done your homework; with a litle guidance for equipment selection, you should be good to go.
