So how do we get it to start backing up and move up from the "0%" ?

THey instructed me to do as you said but also hold down the power button while the machine reboots but when the black screen comes back on with just the Olive logo, release the power button but hold the Eject button down. Problem is when you release the power button, the machine recycles itself again. I tried it like you said but that did not work. They also had me press the eject button 5-7 times quickly. That too did not work.

I really don't want to ship this thing out AGAIN! Had this machine since April and already it was back for a bad hard drive. Grrrrrr!

Nalod,

Sorry that this didn't work, you might try one additional trick, it shouldn't make any difference, but sometimes it does- after you shut down the machine also unplug it and let it sit for five minutes, then plug it back in and begin the start up procedure.

Best,

Hmm, I rebooted the machine, swithed it off at the back, waited a minuted, turned back on and plugged the external hardrive in...but yet when backing still stuck at 0%

yeah, that has been my experience, tried it three time with no luck ...

Something to report to Olive?
Just wait for 4.2.0?

Maybe that's why it shows a message about 4.2.0. without providing a real new version?
Be patient?

Just emailed olive regarding this problem. With my past experience and luck if I try to be patient and wait it is now when my olive's hard drive fails and I loose all my music library

Don't tell me that you only have one backup, that you just ruined with he last try!
Always use two backups (in the least).

Maybe it's an option to go back to 4.1.8? I 'm not sure if the Olive will accept an older version, but it's worth a try.

I don't understand that this new version has such a bad "feature", after so many months of testing (although they did not gave me that opportunity).

Oh, please forgive my bad english. I didn't mean that my olive's hard drive failed but more that I wouldn't be surprised if it did taken my bad experience with all electronics. But somehow I never seem to learn, and leave everything (including backing up comouters etc.) to the last moment, or untill it's too late

Best,

They told me to unplug it and let it sit over nite. Which I did but to no avail.

They were hoping the disc would be read then kick it the phuck out!

The disc spins upon start up then becomes unreponsive.

All functions work besides. Thank you for your advice!

When closed, the button can still be seen:

Sorry, it's a bit vague, but I'm sure you can see it shimmering.
This one is sharper, albeit not much better.

So, try to find it in your Olive, and try te push it, with a match or so.

good luck
Marc

I have an 4HD. I think the opus is the old "musica" chassis. I'll hit that area with a bright LED light and see if it peaks thru. Your photo is excellent and description is very clear.

Nice post and nice pics.

I've read through a fair bit of this thread, and HDD failure seems to happen with some frequency.

I also downloaded Olive's .pdf files for both the 4HD and 6HD units.

Am I correct that neither of these boxes has a fan?

So the HDD failures is likely due to overheating of the HDD?

Also why don't more of you rip your CDs on a PC and then transfer the files from the PC to the Olive unit?

I suppose its not a bad idea. All new music bought of late is mostly thru downloads and its is backed up.

I back up the Olive, back up my computer and I suppose I could keep an external hard drive just for music. Maybe in my mind the Olive is NOT a disposable unit.

I might be wrong!

I recently got my 1st external 2.5" HDD (USB2/3, 500GB, 7200rpm), but I don't back up my stereo .flac music files on it.

Am I correct that neither of these Olive boxes (the 4HD and 6HD units) has a fan?

That's correct.
But the Olive, at least mine, does not get warm enough to be harmful for the internal drive.
Keep in mind that, if one's drive fails, it will be published here. And if someone is happy with his unit, he keeps silent.
It's a bit of a doctors waiting room here.

I rip my music on the olive and not computer simply because I don't like using computers that much. Don't want to wait for it to start up each time I bring a cd I want to rip and that is partly the reason why I bought the olive as that is supoose to be one of it's main futures to be able to quickly rip cd's right in it. Otherwise I could've just use a computer for everyrhing and not bothed with the olive at all. Would've been much cheaper also.
I bought the Olive for it's ability to deal with classical music *). And I wanted some equivalent of a cd-player, and not a bunch of pc's, nas'ses, cables and so on. Then I discovered that it is much more easy to get real good music out of one -almost empty- box, than it is to get it from any PC or NAS-combo.
Now it sounds so sweet, deep, involving and revealing, and life-like, even with the humble internal DAC, that I fell in love with it.

*) I could rip cd's on my pc, import them, but they would always need some refinement with Maestro. So, I don't bother.

I doubt the drive fails because of heat. I agree, the unit does not get that hot.

My unit is well ventilated as well.

I also agree that loading up the music on a pc then moving over does defeat the purpose of the machine. As a back up its a valid strategy and can't find fault with it.

Its backed up to on a hard drive and I suppose if the Olive drive fails, and it will, its going to be a minor repair to get a new one and a "Restore" puts me back in sound soon enough.

I think the problem I have is related to the disc that is in the drive. Its not being read and the machine should recognize that failure and move to the next process should be a menu offering "eject" option.

I'll ship it out next week and update all on the verdict.

I upgraded my Olive 03hd
I work on my Ipad with "Opus.php". If i click the Olive background, then the Olive hd turn on and the "opus" is waiting (see the clock is raotating). If i turn off the Olive HD, then work is the opus on Ipad!
SW: 4.1.9
Somebody know what happened?

Hello, I have been following this thread for a long time and learning a lot. this is my first post. I have an opus 6HD. the system locked up while ripping a cd. then the disc was not seen and would not eject on reboot. after rebooting several times i received "system warning sda i/o error message. shut system off ,turned back on and got 404 not found. then after unplugging system for 30 minutes and rebooting received 500 internal server error, turned off and restarted and got "no input file". called olive and they gave instructions to get disc out, which i did. then they said unplug all connections for 1 hour, which i am doing now. olive said if issue is still there they want me to do a system restore.(yes i have a back up only 2 weeks old.). has anyone had this happen and if so what was the outcome. confidence is not high at this point and am assuming i will have to send to olive to repair.

I have seen such messages, when I had a not-so-reliable hard disk in my humble Olive Opus 4. When it frooze, maestro gives this unfamous 404 not found message. The sda is the hard disk, not the cd drive.
So, I think you have a bad hard disk, or a not so thight cable between the motherboard and the hard disk. (When I had this fault, it helped to refit the cable).
You could try to restore, but I think that would not help, maybe even do more harm, in case of a loose cable.

This morning I had the same problems with a non-responsive cd as is recently reported here. I have 4.1.9. now for several weeks, and I have ripped many cd's with it, without any problem. But today I started with a cd, that ripped fine, but the next cd did not show up in the screen, nor was I able to eject it. I tried my own trick with a stick to push the internal button, and eventually succeeded to eject it. But trying again gave the same miserable result. Again I managed to get it out, and tried the first cd that I had ripped. Again no response. (So, it has nothing to do with this particular cd)
Shutting the Olive off, and rebooting did not help. the trick with the stick was not always helpful, so I had to lift the lid, and push the internal button with my finger.
After several unsuccesfull injects I had to remove the internal powercable for the cd-drive, and by accident, the cable for the on-off-reset button was released. I re-attached it, and had to reboot.
After this my Olive behaved normally again. I have ripped several cd's since, with no problem.

So, something went wrong when I started ripping.
I remember that I had put in the cd , and the screen showed the Olive logo, so I had to push the on-off-reset button while it loaded the cd.

Just FYI

An update to my situation. Unplugging 6hd did not fix problem. olive had me do a system restore. everything seems to be working ok. i am in the process of restoring my files to the opus. never done it before but if back up is any indication then the restore should take approx 3 days (41000 songs in flac). i'll let you know if all is well when restore is complete.

I am seeing a disc recognition issue since upgrading to 4.1.9 on my 06HD:

disc is either not recognized or the wrong title comes up: when it does I have to manually enter correct data, then the correct cover art comes up: a PIA

anyone else see this?
Is that with every cd you insert?
I don't have that.

I bought an Olive 03HD recently in the UK. Yes, I took a gamble, not thinking that I would require warranty service. Over there it seemed to work OK. Since I've been back in Australia I've had a few problems with it. 2 days ago it imported approx. 15 CD's without a problem. Yesterday it did a software update (to 4.1.9) and it imported 1 CD, then the CD wouldn't eject. I have fixed this problem but now the unit won't read a CD, therefore I can't do further imports. I have tried using the Sleep/Wake button on the front and the power switch on the back, but to no avail.
I have a reasonably new laptop PC (running Windows 7) on the same network. The 03HD will playback albums already loaded onto its hard disc. I can operate the 03HD via maestro.
I know that I can import from the PC, but I don't have software to convert the CD's to FLAC.
Any suggestions?
Suggestions:
1. report this to Olive. Too many users with the same issue, this must be a software issue with version 4.1.9.
2. wait for 4.2.0, but after 1.
3. import cd's in wav-format
4. use dbPoweramp for ripping.
Someone else for a better solution/suggestion?

Marc
