Hi Marc,

I see this announcement every time I want to update the o2 from 4.1.9. to 4.2.0. : ‘System has already the latest software installed !‘ - and doesn't 'latest' means the very last ?

We discussed about that issue here and I mailed my questions to olive - but no one from olive gives us an official statement that this will be not the end.

So I have to draw my conclusions ....

Seems to me business as usual.
And the HD-users see the same message. Once in a while you don't see the message when there is a software update. After that the message re-appears. tongue.gif
So I hope you are wrong.

This message has not been changed in years, when you're running the most current version of the SW it will say latest, this does not mean last. I have not seen any message that indicates Olive will no longer support their older machines, you might be the last in line for a fix but they will get to you sooner or later.

I was told by Olive that it required too much labor and is too expensive to update the Olive 4 to the latest software. I hope they change their minds but I'm not holding my breath.

Quod erat expectandum - my hopes deceive more and more :
That would not be a nice way to treat customers 'of the first hour'.

And I think that would not be a successful way to capture a solid market share and to consolidate a companies fortune.

What a pity!

Hi every forum member,

have any of you been able to connect an Olive O3HD with a Cambridge Audio Dac Magic Plus through USB output?

Thans for your input
it works fine with my MYDAC (NuForce) fine without any hassle, but prefare the analogue output from my great toy OPUS No4.

Best, Uwe

Best, Uwe

Do you mean: you have an Opus 03HD, connected via USB with MYDAC, but you also have an Opus No.4 and you prefer the output of that one without external DAC?

Not much action on this thread for awhile, but I am sure that some of you must have your Musica's, Symphony's, or original Opus's in your systems, so I am reaching out here. I've used my modded Musica for five or six years. I've had issues but was able to solve them pretty easily using resources that were more available back in the day. This is a new problem for me, though, and I can't seem to find any evidence online that others have suffered a similar fate.

I was trying to import some files that I converted to FLAC from APE on my computer. I added the files to the import directory over my network, but a couple of them would not import. They played right out of the import directory, so they seemed to be okay, but they wouldn't import and showed as zero bytes in length on the Information screen for the tracks. I therefore decided to delete them, to reconvert the tracks, and then re-upload them. However, I must have been too aggressive in pressing the "delete" button in the import directory because, before I realized it, I not only had deleted the tracks themselves, but, also, the entire "Import" menu item! Now I have no way to import files that are not on CD.

I imagine that I can use the recovery disc to restore to a native state, but I want to avoid that if possible. Is there another way to reenable that menu item of which any of you are aware. It's been awhile since I telnetted into the guts of the OS, but I can follow instructions if that is how one does it.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Mike,

I just made a backup from the partition with the music. There you find a directory import/ in the root.
If a Musica has some resemblance with an Olive 4, than you should check the existence of this directory. I understand that you can telnet to your unit, lucky bastard.
Maybe there is more to it. I never deleted this directory.

Marc, thank you. I think I have figured this out and learned it's an expected behavior. The import menu item always displayed over the years because it always had two files in it, i.e., a config file and maintenance.txt. When I got overaggressive with the delete key, I deleted those two files along with the corrupted FLACs. When the import directory has nothing in it, it apparently does not display the "import" menu item. I added the new versions of the files to the important directory over my network and, once they were there, the "import" option reappeared on the menu. So, everything seems back to normal. I wish all server problems were this easily resolved!

Hi Everyone,

I have owned a 4HD for 2+ years now and have loaded ~ 2,000 CDs on it. I also have three Olive 2 so I can play music in other rooms.

For well over six months now, I have experience a chronic problem that has preventing me from enjoying the unit.

In short, I cannot get the 4HD to boot up. I commonly receive a grey screen with the cursive Olive logo and message "system is starting up - please wait" (see below). However the system never starts up and usually the screen below begins to flash indefinitely.

Until recently, I was able to use the Olive through the iPhone remote or through the Olive 2s. As of a couple days ago, this approach no longer works - I can no longer access the database.

I have had lengthy email conversations with Olive re: the issue. Their basic response has been "hold tight, we have a new version of the firmware" coming out very soon. I have received this message since last May and as recently as a couple weeks ago. Given that I cannot make it to the home screen, I am not quite sure how I will load it if/when it arrives.

Does anyone have suggestions? In the grand scheme of things, booting up the unit wold not seem to be the most complicated task the Olive has to perform ...

Thanks,

Eric

Eric, whenever this happened to my units, it had something to do with partition 5 (not the partition with the music, which is partition 7).
Just fsck this partition, problem gone.

I don't think that any upcoming update will fix your 04HD just by appearing in the cloud.
Didn't they advise yout to recover the unit and to restore the music? It's the most tedious approach, but it should work.
Marc - thanks for you input. I will follow up with them.

I spoke with Olive again and decided to go the recovery route. While it wiped my library clean, I am still having the same boot up issues, among others. I am really at my wits end here. I plan to send the unit back to Olive to have them try to restore/repair it.

The disappointing part of all this is that in addition to the 4HD, I bought three O2 units and had my house wired with ethernet specifically for my Olive set-up. I have burned ~ 2,000 CDs on to the Olive over the past couple years (backed up, so if I ever get this up and running again, I won't lose too much).

Does anyone have any other thoughts/ideas? I really like the concept of the Olive and when it works it is great. When it works ...

Eric,

To me it seems that you have a real hardware issue here. But a real hardware issue is not always difficult to solve. Maybe it's just a loose cable.
If you have still garantee and confidence in Olive's repair unit, send it to them.
Otherwise, try to open the unit, and check the cables, check the hard disk. But that is no easy task, I have once seen a 03HD opened, and that was quite difficult compared with what I'm used with my two Olive 4's. mad.gif So, do that only if you have confidence in your skills.smile.gif

Marc,

Thanks for the ideas. I am actually going to send it back to them. $50 diagnostic fee and then a charge to fix it. I've owned it 2+ years, so I suppose it is out of warranty. Hopefully a simple fix as you suggest. The software has come so far since I bought it in mid-2010 and my issues aside, it is a winner.

Eric, that's a wise decision. I hope all goes well.

Someone here who knows about an upcoming update? It's quite silent here.

For playback purpose what volume levels do most of you use?

I don't understand if the volume control on the Olive gets "noisier" as the volume increase. The lower I set it the louder my amps have to work.

So what do most of you do?

I leave Olive volume at full output

speaking of noisy volume controls: the 06HD headphone out volume control is extremely noisy: for an audiophile unit it seems like they used a cheap potentiometer for headphone volume

When I use my DacMagic (seldom), the output of the Olive is fixed.
Most of the time I use the internal dac, and leave that at maximum output. When I'm lazy, and want it dimmed, I do that in Olive Opus. Some people think that is rubbish, and when I'm influenced enough I ran to the volume knob on the amplifier.
I don't hear any noise.

I had been corresponding with them over the summer. They kept mentioning an upgrade, even asked if I wanted to be part of their beta test. Last I recall it was in the hands of their dealer network. So hopefully something soon. Shipped my 4HD off to them last week, waiting for a response.

Hi everyone,

I am lucky that finally I can find this site to discuss the problem with my HD4.

I am experiencing Eric's problem before. So after I have back up my music, I tried to restore my HD4. I have contacted with Olive and downloaded the zip files from their link. Then I have followed the instruction to restore it. However, I have never succeeded. The process hanged in a few seconds or minutes.

I

I tried to upzip the files I have downloaded and there are two files: ODBInstall.tar.gz and RecoveryCD.img

I am guessing maybe the gz file has a bug so I tried to upzip it with 7zip but I was always told that there is an error

Does anyone have the same problem before?

I just have my Olive HD4 for 14 months and I am now so frustrated that I cannot listen to my music now after work and I am tied to deal with Olive Support, both in my country and US and I guess that I have to fix the problem by myself.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

My HD4 did it too. i did a backup by remote access from my macbook and then did the thing with press the Select and down button on startup. This made it work . It did not go in recovery mode just went back to normal for now.

Hello Eric -
We have an 06HD and an 03HD, both relatively new (2012 purchases). The 03, which we keep in our summer cottage and synched to the 06 database, has worked flawlessly.
The incremental back-up and restore using software 4.20 has worked very well for us.
The 06 from day one had a hard drive vibration issue which I had discussed with Olive. The unit started working erratically after three months. I created an error log file, using the Olive software, and emailed to them. Within a few hours they contacted me and arranged a waranty repair (August). Olive replaced the noisy hard drive and main board (mother board) as well, though not clear there was any issue with that. Had regular updates from them and return shipping notification. All done inside of three weeks, out and back. (Boston area).

So, although the orginal unit had issues that should not have been there, they did stand behind the product and the repair experience for me was very good.

Hope this helps.
Thanks - I hope that I have a similar experience. My first year was pretty much flawless and since then they have a done a decent job with software updates.

I have two Olive Opus 4's, and never ever again Olive will see these back, because one of them has in it the most important invention about music reproduction in more than a century. The second one I bought just to make sure that I could repair a broken Olive myself. That has proven more than rewarding, because I now can do ripping on one and playing music on the other, and i have my own scheme of making incremental backups, without the need for release 4.2.0.

And if something brakes, I have the spare part.
My now 3 years old Olive has had many little problems, mostly regarding a software flaw, that could be mended with chkdsk (fsck in Linux speak), or by restoring a copy of the broken partition. That never was the partition with the music! Lately the on/off button at the front showed erratic behaviour and a weakened light. By just moving the internal plugs a bit, this was repaired.biggrin.gif

Just my luck?rolleyes.gif

Marc - I am sure you have detailed this somewhere in the bowels of this forum, but please do tell more! (or send us back to a post number smile.gif)
