Is it normal for the Opus 4 to just sit there when doing a software upgrade, the Melody upgraded and was showing the status, but not the Opus 4. Just curious, it doesn't seem to be normal...

That issue is already reported to Olive. Nice to hear that it is not an issue for the Melody, that is promising.

If you have any questions or problems about the Opus or Melody's please Pm and I can help you as soon as I can.

Glad to see an Olive representative on this board, this is really great!

SFOlive, can you tell us if the digital output of the Opus 4 is made by a direct conversion from FLAC to digital output format (fully digital) or does it go through a Flac to analog, then Analog to digital again before reaching the digital output connector? (I know the latter sounds weird, just asking...)

Thanks for your great help,

Fred.

If I throw a 24 bit 96 KHz flac file through the digital output, my dacmagic tells me its has a 24 bit 96 KHz resolution. It would be real magic if the Olive could deliver that by conversion.

Thanks a lot for your offer.
The question I have in mind is, what the method is that the Opus No.4 uses to rip music from a cd. Some people here tend to do it themselves with EAC, which I regard as the most time consuming, albeit accurate way, to read the music from the cd. I myself like the faster and no hassle way that the Olive provides.

But it leaves the question about the quality unanswered.
Now we can read the backup file, we could make a comparison, but I hope you can shed some light on this matter.

Thanks for your answer, I agree that would be weird... tell me, if you listen to some music using the opus digital output in 24 bits/96Khz, can you still use the Opus remote control to change the volume?

No. The digital output has no control over the volume. I can even put all sound off, and still listen.

I must say that I don't care. I love to touch my amplifiers volume control. My LFD Zero has no remote at all.

Great.... and I guess the remote does not work neither when playing normal 16 bits files. This leads me to think that the digital ouput is indeed purely digital and to assume that the remote works only by changing the level of output signal of the internal Opus DAC.

Hi SF (should I call you Sam Francisco? ). A couple of questions come to mind. First, can you tell us anything about the new GUI that's mentioned in the release notes as being available April 2nd? Second, is there any talk of making the album art a larger image via Maestro? If not, can I start it?

This made me curious. It's 2 april now, but no update is available. But it will:
"Changes in software version O.4.0.1 and M.4.0.1, released April 6, 2009" is now in the release notes.

Did anyone hear something from Mr. SF? Should we not better call him Science Fiction?
I PM'd him, but got no reaction until now.
I don't mean te be mean, but he has made us some promise.

Downloading it to my Opus and Melody as I type this. Let the feedback on the new GUI begin.

zbrett,

Any chance of some screenshots?

I'm still on the fence about upgrading my Musica to an Opus 4 (still considering PS Audio's soon-to-be-released PerfectWave components or building a home brewed cMP / cPlay audiophile music server), but since Olive is now offering a trade-in program for previous Musica / Opus users I'm strongly considering it.

Actually the new navigation screens are already on the Olive site.

http://www.olive.us/products/opus4_features.html

While I haven't had a great deal of time to thoroughly go through all of the new 4.01 GUI, what I have seen so far is another big improvement over version 3.3. It is also being closer to being able to be completely controlled through something like a Nokia tablet or iPhone/iTouch.

Trade in program? Details?

Thanks

Love it!

The trade-in program, which is pretty recent apparently, was described to me as your current unit plus $900 nets you a 1TB Opus 4. There are no other upgrade options (i.e. the smaller HD units). That's a pretty good deal in my mind (essentially a $1000 credit), which is much more than you'll be able to get on the open market for a used model, excepting perhaps an Opus No. 5 which retailed for $3k I believe. My first guess is that Olive wants to encourage users to upgrade so they don't have to support a legacy platform (and one that was, from what I gather, pretty much developed outside the company by the now bankrupt German firm Hifidelio), which makes it odd that they are continuing to sell refurbished early models on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190297588872

Also, it seems as if the Opus No. 6 will be coming in the summer; The Absolute Sound had a blurb about the prototype model being on display in their CES 2009 report.

Hmmmm... sounds like Olive is stealing my ideas!

Didn't have much time today to ponder over the beauty of the new interface. But I like to stress that there is also a new manual and a new recovery cd-image available.

At first glance I didn't notice any changes in the Maestro interface.

Can any of you 4 users who have updated to the latest software inform me of the current status of the Random mode? Can you Random by Library (all),Genre, Artist? Or must you create a Playlist to Random? I would love to get a 1TB 4, but I really only use the Random modes on my Musica, so it's a deal-buster if they haven't added that feature, or never plan to. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks, Ed

I was able to get it to shuffle by artist. Highlight artist and hit play. There is a glitch where you get the circling processing icon until you hit track, but once you hit track, and pick shuffle, it shuffles by artist without issue.

The navigation structure remains Genre -> sub-Genre -> Album (not tracks) so while you can now use the shuffle mode in Genre's, shuffle only works at the Album level under Genre.

Shuffling by tracks doesn't seem to work either. It only shuffles from within the same album of the track you selected.

More info...

I was just informed by Olive that these issues will be addressed in a future update

Its a bit glitchy, but understandable IMO being such a different interface. Its almost like a new device!

-I can only see 64 max tracks in an album in Maestro still. Its actually fine on the Olive.
-Network setup pops up occasionally for no reason even after making the settings and saving????
-Why do I have to hit the search feature twice? When I hit artist and than search, I still have to hit "search Artist". You should only have to hit it once (just a minor issue).
-Please give me my scroll feature back in Maestro.

Z, your right about Rondo being just about there! Someone needs to make an app for the Ipod that locks and resizes screen horizontal, add pause/play and we're there. I'd even buy a separate ipod just to use as a remote!

You might want to try a hard reset (power off reset and reboot), or resetting the unit to the default settings and starting over because I can see all of the album covers in cover art. I still have an "unknown" album at the end, but besides that, it seems to work fine for me.

I haven't noticed anything with network settings popping up. I'm in wired mode.

Search feature twice. Check. I noticed the same thing.

Scrolling in Maestro. I agree (again).

Make sure you mention these things in the survey.

Brett

The 64 thing Im talking about is I have a single album with hundreds of TV theme songs on it (dont laugh) and you can only see 64 tracks in Maestro. You can see them all on the Olive however. Not a big deal to me as I can just make up new albums: part 1, part 2 etc, but I thought it was mentioned before that there are some classical albums that contain over 64 tracks.

Am I going crazy here... I cant seem to see any edit options in Maestro anymore?

Are you using Firefox or Windows Internet Explorer? Internet Explorer, especially the new version 8 butchers the Maestro interface (including the missing edit buttons). Olive has been concentrating on optimizing the Maestro interface for Firefox, so give it a try.

LOL!!! I just downloaded IE8 last night!

I'll give Firefox a try. Thanks!

My problems are not over: indeed, more than 64 tracks in an album or (classical) work are not over yet, and also more than 64 works in any classical genre for a composer are not shown. (In Maestro, not on the Opus).
I can divide the classical genres per composer though. But if I have haydn with his > 100 symphonies, I'm in trouble

Thanks, Z. Any timeframe?
As soon as Olive gets it straightened out, I'll be a customer for a 4. It has puzzled me why Olive didn't carry over the Random/Shuffle mode from the HiFidelio software, but maybe they couldn't due to some licensing issues. The Random/Shuffle mode works so well on the older units, and is so much fun, that I now can't live without it. :-)
