Today I got my replacement CD/DVD-writer. It should have been a CW-8124-B SLIMLINE PANASONIC, but due to some misunderstanding the package consisted of a TEAC drive (model DW-224SL -R83), and when I phoned the company they explained that it also had a SUN number, which must have been used for both types and was the source of the error.
I was not sure, to say the least, that this TEAC drive would work, but the man at the phone told me that I might try it, and if it did not function, I could send it back for the real thing.

So I sat down with my 2nd Olive, which has a working drive, but which is always open and easy to tackle. My music making Olive was left doing what it should do, music making.
Gosh, the operation affected 10 screws, and some special bits, which luckily belong to my standard equipment. rolleyes.gif
Without much hope I switched the Olive on, and heard the usual purr purr from the TEAC, and much to my relief and amazement, it could read a CD and show what is on it. biggrin.gif

So, for all ye poor Olive 4 users, it has a CW-8124-B SLIMLINE PANASONIC, but it also works with a TEAC DW-224SL -R83.

That can be useful information.

I don't think I posted this right before but if it shows up twice I apologize.

What is the "iTunes Support" feature in the settings of the Olive 4HD. Mine is turned off. Should it be turned on. I read the manual but didn't see anything about it. what does it do.

Maybe you should have a look here: http://www.olive.us/support/software/releasenotes.html
And search for iTunes.
In short: if you don't have iTunes, you won't need it.

Today I succeeded to replace the 1tb disk with a 2TB disk, but my first try went teribly wrong. For some time now I had 2 hard disks lying around, both with a failed recovery of the software. I copied the missing 5th and 7th partitions which took a considerable amount of time, and booted. This failed, although I gave it a lot of time before resetting it. Anyway, it did not boot. My assumption was that the recovery had not been able to initialize the missing partitions, and that copying them from my backup should suffice.
Well, in some way it did, because now the software got busy with exactly that: initialize. It had wiped out all the music.:-(
The second try went well, after copying also partition 2 and 3 from the backup. I should have done that in fhe first place.
For me, the recovery procedure is useful for producing a disk with a correct starting mechanism only.

While my Olive did not work properly, I also noticed that touching the touch screen did not function. I could not relate that to the absence of music, or an old version (4.1.6) of the software, so I was not amused. Before I finally closed the lid, I also removed and reattached every electrical plug on the lid, and (that?) did it.
I had noticed such degradation in function before in my other Olive, and the same solution had helped in that case too.

Hi Marc - you might consider a good electrical contact grease. (NOT a dielectric grease for automobiles, which is insulating). In the US, there is something called No-oxid, 'A-special' meant for electrical contacts. Been used for decades and by the Bell Labs/Bell telephone. We used it in our boats, and I still have a small container from my father. Also, MG Chemicals 847 Carbon Conductive Assembly paste.

Thanks for the suggestion. If it becomes a nuissance, I will try something like that. The carbon stuff looks promising.
