DLP Experts: have you noticed this before?

I would like to ask all DLP experts in the forum who have used the technology for a long time or who know a lot about the technology to help me understand a issue I noticed only once in my new PJ.

I have posted this in the other forum as well. But since this is more related to the technology I thought of posting it here as well to have a better chance of response.

I have an Infocus IN80 1080p DLP and it is an awesome machine. Absolutely loving it. I have clocked up around 68 hrs so far on it.

Last night, when I turned it on with the Blu Ray player, I saw some short vertical stripes at the lower half of the right hand side of the screen. I thought that there must be a loose connection or sync issue so I pressed the auto image button and then the bands covered the entire right hand of the screen from top to bottom.

I then connected my laptop via HDMI to see if it is there in another source and I saw the same. I looked at the Internet but couldn't see any problem or issue mentioned anywhere. I took a few handheld screenshots to show the issue (see below). I have already emailed Infocus about this but thought of posting here to see if anyone has experienced this before.

I restarted the PJ after resetting all cables and connections and it was all fine from then.

What I would like to know is
1. have anyone seen or experienced this before? or know why it can happen?
2. Is it related to loose connections (i remember the HDMI cable wall pulled by my friend's kid before this and the PJ was off that time)
3. Is it an early indication of any problem?

Appreciate your thoughts on this. probably it is just a connection issue but wanted to clarify if there is something bigger than I am thinking.

That appears to be a processing problem. Sync or timing issue. But I'd say it has nothing to do with DLP per se.

Have you tried unplugging the unit from mains for a little while when it is turned off?

I've never seen that problem myself - glad it cleared itself up !

Thanks to all of you who responded so far. Expecting a call from Infocus soon.

On restarting the problem cleared up. Will check again today.

Meanwhile look forward to what others have to say.

I had this problem on my Benq W10000. It looked just as you have shown in your screen shots, only mine were on the left side of the screen. It was intermittent at first but eventually became a fixed problem after the projector warmed up. It had something to do with processing and the dmd panel. Benq decided to replace the projector.

1080P DLP projectors use 2 controller chips to drive the mirrors on the DMD chip and create the image. One controls the left half, the other the right. In your case it looks like something flaked with one of the controler circuits, thus only effecting half the screen.

Sorry to see that. The screen shots you posted, without the vertical lines of course, look very nice. Hopefully Infocus will replace the unit quick for you, if it is a processing problem like others have mentioned.

That looks to me like somthing went bad with the processor. It could be that when your friends kid pulled on the HDMI cable that was pluged into the unit that it damaged somthing on the motherboard, as the input panel is connected straight to it. Its very unlikely, but definently not impossible. I dont know what infocus will do as I have had just terrible customer service with infocus.

The HDMI cable pulled by the kid was the Blu ray player end and not the PJ end. The player and the Pj is separated 7 mtrs apart and there is some slack as well. I just thought if a improper connection could casue this, But when I saw the same thing on the laptop I was convinced it is not the connection and Georgeb's and f300v10's post are convincing as well. Infocus appears to be very good in this part and they are swapping a new Unit soon

HHHhhhmmmmm, yeeesss I have seen this before... I believe it was in the under $3000 forum.

I concur with others that it is likely in the processing rather than the chip. It could be limited to DLP, but even if it is, it is really rare (I have not seen it).

I've had nothing but outstanding service from IF.

This has been my experience with Infocus Customer service as well. Three years ago their customer service was good. Within the last year it has been terrible.

Unfortunately I really think it depends on who is taking care of you (not uncommon for many companies).

Thanks to all who responded. Infocus did a fantastic service and they just replaced my unit with a brand new one. Great service.

Thanks to GeorgeB whose response is now with Infocus and they will review the fault.

On a whole this is a rare issue and I have noticed it only once. Now I have a new IN80. More movies...

Cheers

Hey, Ani. Glad to hear all worked out well. My BenQ was over a year old but only had 300 hours on it when they replaced it so it's like starting from fresh. Good to see Infocus stand behind their products the way BenQ stands behind theirs.
