Need light suggestion for Canon HF100

Hi Everyone.

So I just ordered a Canon Hf100 videocamera and I am very excited.

I need some help however. I will be recording a family birthday party quite soon. It will take place in a restaurant and will also have a live band...

I understand the low-light performance is not great on this camera so I would like to get a light that I can mount on top of it. I have seen people record weddings and such and always use an on camera light which is a great idea...

The problem is I am clueless when it comes to these things, and since the camera is quite small dont want to end up getting a HUGE light that will make filming very awkward. But at the same time I need to be able to mount it on this camera...

I would really appreciate some help and advice on this matter. The budget is around $100 I guess. Thanks.

Who told you that the Low Light performance on the HF100 is bad. The low Light performance on the HF/Hg models is one of their strong points.
I have a Sony MiniDv Sd camcorder, which at the time of purchase was a good low light performer and I compare my low light videos to those on vimeo.com and even the web-based 720P video on vimeo.com are 10X better than my best low light video on SD WITH a light.
I say make a lot of practice videos and see if you really need a light, you WILL havwe to pay more than usual because of the proprietary hotshoe

to OP...this is partly correct. The hf has good low light performance. But if you want to reduce grain I recommend using the cinemode setting. the colors are a little less vibrant but you wont get as much grain as in other shooting modes.

Now, you can buy an adapter to make your cameras hot shoe compatible with any aftermarket light. Canon does make one which is good because it runs off your cameras power supply. But you will pay a little more for the convenience.

Also try using 30p mode for low light shot instead of 60i, you gain one whole stop and it really makes a difference.

go to circuit city, and get the sunpak combo light kit. $30
