Need Sub suggestions. Whats the best Sub in the $600-$900 range?

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking for some ideas to replace an 8-year old NHT "SubOne" powered subwoofer that has stopped working. I haven't yet figured out why the NHT has failed. The fuse inside the sub was blown. When I replaced it with a new one and turned on my A/V receiver the sub gave out again after a loud groaning noise, and the new fuse was also blown. I prefer to fix the sub if it can be done cheaply (i don't want to spend a lot money if it can be avoided). Alas since replacing the fuse didn't work, I figure it probably isn't worth having an 8-year old sub repaired professionally. So I am asking for suggestions for a replacement subwoofer for the living room. I want to get the best sub (in terms of the highest quality build and sound available) available under $900. If there is some sub that is slightly more expensive but provides a lot more in features or sound quality then that's ok too. So there is a little leeway. So Here are my requirements for a new sub:

Must work with Brand New Onkyo TX-SR876 Receiver. Link
The sub must be of a high quality build, and it must be better than current Subwoofer.

Budget: $600-$900
Side Limits: No Larger than 16x16x16
Room Dimensions: 4000 cubic feet, not including open to Kitcher/Dining Room and Foyer
Primary Uses: 70% Movies, 15% Music, %15 Gaming (PS3)
Appearance Requirements: Black Case (preferably Glossy)
Time Frame: In the Next Couple of Weeks
Listening Preferences: Volume can get quite loud during some Movies

The specs for my current Sub, the NHT, are as follows:

"Vented subwoofer with built-in amplifier and outboard controller",
"Driver: 10" long-throw polypropylene woofer",
"Power: 250 watts mono into 8 ohms, under licence from Sunfire Corp.",
"Frequency Response: 25Hz - 180Hz +/-3db"
"Distortion: Less than 0.3% at full power"
"Crossover: Low-pass continuously variable between 40-180Hz, 18dB/octave, etc"
I have a 5.1 surround sound system with speakers built into the walls/ceilings. The NHT did a very satisfactory job while it lasted.

I am knowledgeable about video equipment like HDTVs, and Blu-ray players. But I must admit that I know very little about subwoofers or speakers. I don't know how to differentiate between a quality sub and a cheap one, and i dont know which specifications are important for producing good deep, clear sound. I don't even know which companies are respected for making good subwoofers (except for Velodyne). So if anyone suggests a sub, I'd appreciate a reason why they think their recommended sub is a good, high quality one. If you guys need more information just ask me.

I'd like to thank everyone that makes a suggestion.

mostly what i like is the "Risk-free, in-home 45 day trial"

SVS SB12-Plus

I've been researching sub's a lot and the sb12-plus would be way too under powered for a room that size, the pb12 for sure would be ok. I have a room for my HT and it's only 10' by 13' and have decided on velodyne dls 5000r,and it's in your price range but still don't think it would be powerful enough for your room either.According to svs web site the pb12-plus is $1139 and that is a very high quality sub.

Thanks for the suggestions by both of you. I appreciate it. I am still looking at different options. The only problem with the PB12-plus is that I already have built-in wooden cabinets in the living room. The PB12 wouldn't fit into space designated for the subwoofer which has dimentions something like 18 wide x 17 high x 20 deep. This space was designed for my current NHT (16x16x16). So unfortunately any new sub has to fit into the cavity. I'll try to get a picture of the space and my current sub up in the next few days. Again thanks for the suggestions.

Oh I just wanted to add, my old subwoofer before it stopped working was good/loud enough for my needs for what thats worth. I posted the specs for it in the first post. At the minimum I am looking for a sub that performs atleast as well to what i had, and fits in the space that I have. I just need to figure out if the SB-12 Plus is comparable or better than what I had, and if there are better options. =)

There are much better options, but they dont fit your rather radical size requirements at all. I don't know of many subs that do.

I also think the SB12 Plus is a good option. Another might be the Martin Logan Abyss. It's closer to $1000-1100 retail, but you might find a deal on it.
