Is the future of HDTV in VHF or UHF?

When digital broadcasting started, the stations were given a second broadcast frequency, usually UHF, so they could broadcast in digital and keep broadcasting in analog simultaneously.

My understanding is that eventually, the stations will have to give up one of the frequencies - they either keep their original frequency, or they can keep the new UHF frequency, but not both.

Is this correct? When the day comes that there is only digital television broadcasting, will it be on VHF or UHF? I can't believe many stations will give up their original frequency assignments.

What spectrum of bandwidth does the FCC want to reclaim and how is it going to be reallocated?

When analog TV goes away digital TV will be available on channels 2-51 ( VHF & UHF ). Channels 52-69 will be auctioned off by the FCC for various land and land mobile wirless services. Some channels in the 2-51 range will be granted special use licenses for other services if no broadcaster uses a .particular channel. Any broadcasters using 52-69 will have no choice but to use alower channel assignment.

Broadcasters will have the choice to stay with whichever channel they want.

Our local Fox affiliate, WSJV, has been allocated ATSC channel 58. The only problem is our local ABC affiliate, WBND, is currently broadcasting low-power NTSC on channel 58. I don't even know if WBND has any plans for digital operation. From what is being said here, channel 58 is not a final solution.
