Sony HTIB Sub upgrade?

One of my friends has a Sony HTIB with a sub connected via speaker wires and it's not self powered. It's just a sub speaker wire to sub connection. He doesn't have a sub pre out for an RCA connect on the receiver, if he got a powered sub could he send the signal via those two speaker wires for something like a Polk PSW505?

Why do you think he needs a self powered sub? The Sony has the sub preamp built in doesn't it? Does the sub speaker driven by the HTIB sound OK?

You could use the sub out speaker wires but it might introduce noise and there may be too much signal or boost level. You may have to attenuate the signal with a resistor L network.

Yeah his sub is only 4-6" with not much bass to it so he was looking to upgrade to a 10 or 12" self powered since his receiver isn't real powerful.

Yeah, if the powered sub has speaker binding posts (sometimes called "high level inputs"), then you can use it with that type of receiver. That Polk should have it, as do any number of subs.

Thanks, should he be ok with just connecting the wires or does he need any other adapter like above mentioned?
