i'm having a strange issue, with the latest media browser build (from june).. on windows 7 x64..

For some reason, on my HTPC, if i install this version, the minute it opens, it starts playing an mkv from one of my subfolders.. i have no idea why..

So for now i've reverted back to the previous version and its ok..

Anyone else had this happen?

Hmmm...all I did was select the drive in the config utility.

I did figure out a work around. I edited the xml file and replace the startup location from the folder and put in the drive letter. It works like a champ then.

But, this functionality is broken (bug) in the current version of MB i.e 2.1.1. It will be fixed in the next version due sometime this month.

Thank you! I'll look into that now.

Been using Media Browser for a while and I am currently stumped. I started my first drive of rips using Genre folders and saved my iso images based on my choice of Genre.

I am now on my second hard drive and when I added it to the media browser configuration wizard, it shows two copies for each genre, "action" for example with the first folder for action containing files in drive 1 and the second drive showing in action folder number 2.

Did I assume how to use "genre" wrong? I noticed several screen shots where media browser users were using the same method, which works perfectly with one drive. Is there an easy fix for this or do I have to show all my movies under just a main folder heading?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you take a screenshot of your Configuration page?

Are you using MB just for movies or will you add TV, Podcasts or Music in the future?

There are many different ways to set it up. What do you want your first MediaBrowser page to look like? Do you want it to start with a general Movies Icon and then go to the Genres screen after you click on Movies or do you just want it to show all of the Genres on the first page? Starting off in the Genres is the easiest way to go but you can do it with a main Movie icon too. Starting with a Movie Icon forces you to use virtual shortcuts which can get rather confusing.

Decide what you want your main page to look like first and then we can help you get your files organized.

Can anybody access themoviedb? I was able to get to the website but when I want to search for a movie, it said the server was busy. Can anyone do the search?

Currently, the start page shows three icons--"DVD" "HD-DVD" and "Bluray".

Standard "DVD" is on one drive and will stay that way, HD-DVD is on one drive and will stay that way, Bluray is now on two drives and will be the media that continues to expand to more drives in the future. Each drive has the "genre" folders. I am up for virtual shortcuts, if it explained in "dummies fashion" Thanks.

I think this should do it for you.
For multiple folders making up one section.

That is the way it is configured, shows duplication of genre folders based on which hard drive the files are in. I believe the above method only works if all movies are kept out of genre folders???

OK, here is how I believe it should be set up. One disclaimer though, I haven't used the virtual folder shortcuts myself since they are such a PITA, but I have read about others using it, so it should work. Also, there are multiple ways to set this up to get the same results, this is just one method. If this method doesn't seem right or is too complicated try searching the General Help or Tutorial forums over at Mediabrowser.tv.

http://www.mediabrowser.tv/forum/

To start off, lets assume you have 2 HDDs labeled C and D where your bluray genres and movies will reside. On the configuration page, in the left hand panel, you still have your DVD, HD-DVD and Bluray headings. DVD and HD-DVD stay the same. You would point Bluray to a new folder you have created, let's call it C:/bluray/genres. That's all you have to do in the configuration wizard, so exited out of it when you are finished.

Now you set up your genre folders. Let's start with just 2, Action and Comedy. In C:/bluray/genres create a new Action folder and a new Comedy folder. There will be no movies stored in these 2 folders, just shortcuts pointing to the actual movie folders and a .jpg or .png of the Genre Icons you wish to use. That's all for the genre folders for now.

Now you move on to the actual movie folders. I would use the following format "X:/ActionX", so you would have the following new folders on your C and D drives:

C:/ActionC
C:/ComedyC
and
D:/ActionD
D:/ComedyD

Once those 4 folders are created, you would drag and drop the appropriate movie folders into each of them. You can put an Action movie into either of the 2 ActionX folders and MediaBrowser will still display all of your Action movies in alphabetical order, so don't worry about keeping them grouped together.

The last step is to go back and add the shortcuts to the genre folders. They will each contain the following:

C:/bluray/genres/Action will have 3 items in it
Folder.jpg (The icon you want to see for Action)
Shortcut to C:/ActionC
Shortcut to D:/ActionD

C:/bluray/genres/Comedy would also have 3 items
Folder.jpg (icon for Comedy)
Shortcut to C:/ComedyC
Shortcut to D:/ComedyD

That should be all there is to it. I left out the actual format for the "Shortcut to C:/ComedyC" because I have never actually used it myself and didn't want to give you bad info on it. I'm sure it is located somewhere on the MediaBrowser Wiki or you could ask one of the experts over in the MediaBrowser forums.

As you can see, it is a bit of a pain to get setup, but once you have it done it is painless to add new drives or network shares to you collection. Good luck.

Argh!

Now it's telling me that I need to check to see if something in the Program Data folder exists...

"There was a problem playing the content.
Check Location Exists
C:\\ProgramData\\MediaBrowser\\StartupFolder\\Ripped Movies.vf"

It was working...I swear. Now I get this or some other crash ever time I try.

No problem, I just hope it works the way you want it to work. After looking at some of the MB forum posts about shortcuts, I am beginning to have my doubts. It sounds good in theory, but getting the shortcuts to work properly might be a bit of a chore.

Don't waste too much time trying to troubleshoot this method if it doesn't work on the first or second try. There is a quick and dirty method that works exactly the way you want, but isn't as scalable as the one listed above. It requires a bit more planning and will involve a bit of swapping of files between your 2 hard drives but it definitely works. I use it for my TV archive and am very happy with it. It works well, but it a bit ugly.
FYI,

The reason your genre folders are showing up multiple times is because you are setting the parent folder, "movies", as the one in the configuration. That means every lower folder will be displayed. Since you now have 2 drives with these genre folders, each drive is going to display the genre folder with the movies it contains on its hard drive. MB does not see the genre folder on each HD as the same folder. They are unique and different to it.

If you can't get virtual shortcuts to work, I'd scrap trying to work it that way and setup your genre folders from the main MB screen (so you'd click the genre you want to look at from the main screen instead of 'Movies'). Just create a new series name for each genre and add all the folders for just that genre. This will prevent it from appearing multiple times.

I got the same error until I realized I had a stray ISO image stored in the main folder (in your case "Ripped Movies") instead of it's own.

jrwalte,

Thanks for your help in this.

Can't figure out virtual folders. Are you saying to place my genre ping images in the "images by name folder"? I am not really clear with your suggestion "Just create a new series name for each genre and add all the folders for just that genre"
I'm not sure what your current setup looks like, but lets say your genre folders are under the series named 'Movies'. So when you load MB, you see Movies. You click on Movies and then all your genre icons show up.

Instead, create a series for each Genre in the MB configurator and link that series to the genre folders on each hard drive. So the genres 'Action', 'Drama', etc, would show where 'Movies' used to show from the main MB loading screen. This will have MB load all your seperate 'action' genre folder locations as one and not list the folder on each hard drive.

In addition, if you wanted to create a series that lists all of your movies, you could create 'Movies' and have it link to every genre folder you have created (only add the final folders where the movie folders are - otherwise you'll get a list of folders and not movies). This will cause all movies, regardless of genre, to appear in that series.

Another option is to just do away with creating your own genre folders and let metadata do it for you. Every movie is placed in a genre, albeit many of them, such as action, drama or suspense, thriller. If you don't mind it appearing in multiple genre areas, MB can take the metadata genre info and can do a genre sort for you. This way you only have to place all movies under the same series. Much less configuration and maintaining this way.

That method works, but you loose the ability to have collections such as Standard DVD, HD-DVD, and Bluray along with "genre under each choice". But I guess it is the only way. Tried for several hours to make virtual folders work, but no luck!

If anyone else has an idea please let me know.

If you're willing to use MB's built-in genre filter using the metadata of the movie, then you can keep your DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-ray options. Just set up the DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-ray series just like you just set up your genre series and it will work. You'll have to physically move all the movies from their current genre folder into that genre's parent folder, though.

So if you had movie X under d:\\movies\\Blu-ray\\Action, you'd then have to move it to d:\\movies\\Blu-ray. This will stop the multiple genre folders from appearing when they exist on multiple hard drives.

If you want to keep your current DVD, HD-DVD, and BluRay structure with genres for each you are going to have to split up your Bluray genres over 2 hard drives. This is referred to as spanning and it isn't difficult to setup, but is a bit of a pain to maintain if you outgrow your storage. Here's how you set it up:

First you need to create a new bluray genre folder on each hard drive:

C:/BlurayGenreC
D:/BlurayGenreD

Next you have to do a bit of planning. I believe you previously stated that you had duplicate bluray genre folders on each drive. You need to combine the duplicates together so you only have one folder for each genre. After you are finished, you need to look at the space available on each drive and decide which drive you want to use to store the different genre folders. Let's say your setup looks like this:

C Drive has 200GB available
D Drive has 500GB available

And you genre folders look like this:

Drama 150 GB
Comedy 100 GB
SciFi 80GB
Anime 50 GB
Music Videos 35 GB
Misc. 20 GB

In this example, I would move the Misc. Music and Anime folders to C:/BlurayGenreC and the Drama, Comedy and SciFi folders to D:/BlurayGenreD. When you are happy with the moves and feel like you have sufficient room to expand on each drive, move on to the final step of setting up the Bluray folder in the configuration wizard.

The configuration wizard is a breeze. Just highlight the Bluray folder on the left hand panel. If your old configuration is still listed, delete all of the old entries and add the addresses for the 2 new BlurayGenreX folders you just created. That's it, you're done.

I use this method myself using network shares and haven't run into any problems so far. The only drawback is that it is going to be a bit of extra work if you ever outgrow your current 2 drives. You would need to physically copy some of your existing genre folders to the new drive. And since typical genre folders can run into the hundreds of GB, it can get time consuming. That's why the shortcut method is much better if you could get it working. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. Good luck.

Another option is to go ahead and bite the bullet and setup some sort of NAS or other storage solution that is expandable and doesn't care about physical disks. I use WHS and like it a lot. 5.5TB and growing...

As I currently have 3.75 tb available and half gone, I will probably end up heading towards WHS, once I fell all issues are ironed out with my new system.

Thanks for all the tips and feedback.

So I've got MB pretty much set up the way I want (except for getting genre icons to show which seems to be a bug), and I'm ready to start adding MB to other computers in the house.

Is there a good way to do this? I'm guessing I'll install MB on the other computers (running VMC) and then I need to copy/sync certain folders? Can anyone point me to which folders will be necessary to copy to the other computers?

fwiw, my metadata for TV Shows and Movies is all contained within the respective folder for that Show/Movie. I have an ImagesbyName folder under Mediabrowser as well for Genres, Actors, etc.

I believe I can then use a program like Allwaysync to make sure the ImagesByName and other folders stay synchronized? Can this be done out-of-the-box with any functions on Vista Ultimate? This would save me having to spend $ on Allwaysync.

You shouldn't need to copy/sync any of the folders. Just use the configuration wizard to point to the same folders you are using on your main pc. Just be sure to use the correct network path.

Imagesbyname can be a bit trickier to setup over a network, but there is a MB forum thread that should walk you through it.

All of my movies and TV shows folders on on a network share so that part should be easy, thanks.

I thought I had read somewhere that moving the ImagesByName folder had caused issues with some MB users, so I hadn't messed with it yet. Hopefully the thread above will help out.

On a side note, have you heard of any workaround for getting Genre icons to show up in the latest version of MB? That's the only (main) thing that I'm trying to get working for the wife.

I think most people who had problems moving the imagesbyname folder, screwed up the editing of the config file. Maybe they will add that option to the configuration wizard on of these days.

The Genre icons has been fixed in the trunk and will be ready for the next release. Supposedly, that is scheduled for Oct. 22nd. Haven't heard of a workaround.

I'll read through the original link carefully before messing with the location of the imagesbyname folder.

Good to hear that a fix for the genre icons is planned. I'll probably just set everything up (with the clapperboard icons) as if it works and then hopefully they will magically appear on the next upgrade. Thanks for the help.

I ask at the risk of pitchforks, but here we go:

anyone using this on an extender? I asked about this in the 360 forum, but I'm not sure anyone there knows. MB plays the movie perfectly fine, but menus and such are excruciatingly slow. Thoughts?

Also, on topic, I'm using MetaBrowser to get ALL of my metadata, posters, etc. When you click for details within the movie (you get a menu for details, something else, and zoom), details are blank. How to fill this spot with my already acquired data?

If I missed it discussed already, my apologies.
