Blue Ray for me?

I am getting a 1080 TV to replace my 720 but it is 30 feet from my AV Receiver and other components. Current DVD player outputs component 3' to the Receiver, Receiver outputs component 30' to the TV. I cannot easily change the set up and the receiver has no HDMI jacks. Question: To get the max 1080 video from a Blu-ray machine, do I need HDMI or will component do?
I do not want to get nailed by the "weakest link" scenario.

You'll be able to do 1080i for sure; however, you may not be able to do 1080p. I'm not sure if any BD players will output 1080p over component - it's *technically* possible, but most, possibly all, prefer to reserve 1080p mode for HDMI connections only.

You can get 1080i on component with blu-ray discs with most players but not 1080p without HDMI. Also using the blu-ray player with regular commercial DVD title discs won't upconvert on component (only on HDMI) so that will be 480p at most.

So to get full value for the Blu-ray, I will have to simply put the player (temporarily) on the floor by the TV and output HDMI to the TV's HDMI input and then send the sound as at present via the optical out to the receiver, right?

Or are those so called "converters" (HDMI to Component) starting to come into vogue?

Joxer,
Will the new TV (Sony XBR6) be able to upscale the 480 to 1080, thus giving the old DVD's a good PQ boost or is that not how the game works?

HDTVs can usually upconvert to their native display format. But the quality of that upconversion varies greatly, usually the better upconverting DVD players (like Oppo) use a superior chipset for that purpose than used in displays. You would have to be the judge of the difference in upconverting quality yourself.

You will want HDMI - check out www.monoprice.com - they have good prices on long cables.

Juderobert -Joxer,

Thanks, but the Receiver does not have HDMI either and even if it did, I cannot get more than a very skinny cable and connector (coax/RCA plus sizes) into the wall, through it, around the corners, and out again. For me, HDMI is just a killer, so I will probably do a temp hookup Blu-ray to TV via 3' HDMI and then maybe see what happens via component in terms of how good the Sony XBR6 scaling 480 to 1080 is. Welcome any ideas I have not thought of and appreciate much you two sharing with me.
