Da Lite Highpower cleaning

Hi guys:

I have been reading this forum for some time and have learned a ton of information. I recently purchased a Highpower screen (mostly due to what I have read here) and absolutely love it. However, my dog licked the bottom of the screen last night leaving a small but seemingly permanent "wet mark". According to Da Lite's cleaning instructions, the spot can be cleaned with water but says that it is very difficult to eliminate streaking. Anyone have any ideas how (or whether) I can remove the spot? Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can remove Spot. Put Spot in the back of your truck, drive him out about 20-30 miles and drop him off at someone's farm.

BTW, we got your question in the other thread. Go view it, and good luck with Spot.

call Dalite directly and ask them how to clean it.

And No dont get rid of spot

I just had an issue somewhat like this with my high power, so I tried using some clean towels and hot tap water [from our well] and I thought I'd totally ruined the screen. Calcium and/or iron streaks [and/or water-heater copper?] all over it.

After a quick run to the store, plain distilled water on a heavy bath towel cleaned it up perfectly.

Instead of creating another thread I will post my related question on this one.

What is the proper method of cleaning Da-Lite's high power screen material?

Manufacturer says that it is not recommendable to try to clean the screen. Has anyone tried the method they are recommending?

My screen has a lot of mildew/mold stains on it. Where I live the weather is quite humid, and that might be the reason. This didn't happen with my previous high power material, but well. I ruined the previous one while cleaning it. I just want to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Does anyone have the link to clean this properly? I have a 5 year old Da-Lite high power and it really needs cleaning. Any movie a white sceen looks streaky and bad. It's really getting to me when I watch movies. any help is really appreciated. I will try calling da-lite next week as well.

I clean my HP 2.8 every year or so. I use Denatured Alcohol and a couple of micro fiber cloths. No smoking or open flame DA is highly flammable. Have your projector on displaying a 100% white pattern, use the AVS disk or if you can set the blank screen to white that is fine. This helps you see what you are doing. Wet one rag well and wipe a 1 -2 ' square at a time. Bugs can be hard to get off, Hydrogen peroxide works well on these, finish it off with the DA.
Do not crease or rub to hard, let the chemical do the work. I have done this 3 times with no issues. The screen will be like new when you are done, take your time and work in small overlapping areas.

Mine is a 133 high power diag perm mount. Just must be years of dust buildup in a closed room as nobody ever touches it. I will try this approach. I will have to find some micro fiber cloths. No water, only the DA right?

I have tried water in the past, it takes a very long time for it to dry in comparison to the DA (minute or 2) so you never know if you are done or not for a couple of days. The screen is covered with billions of micro beads .. so like a window, you do not want to leave anything behind to cloud it up. Many folks have had luck with water and cleaning products like simple green, but I personally prefer DA. There is no reason not to try both, the DA may be to pungent if you do not have good ventilation, just keep in mind that the water will take days to dry completely and will look dark until it is dry. I gota say, you have your work cut out .. 133" is a lot of surface to clean.. GOOD LUCK!

yeah - large area to clean. Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. I hope it just is layers of dust at this point. 5 years ago I did try to clean it with water and it left streaks to this day. As long as the DA doesnt do any worse than the water did years ago to the coating I should be fine. I like the distilled water and large cotton towel approach - seems less potent than DA and I could set up a dehumidifier and a fan to dry it quick. Thinking of that as well.

I posted here about the distilled water + clean white towel more than three years ago, and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.... with normal viewing.

I just now carefully examined my HP again [with a 250-watt utility lamp, front-on and looking edge-to edge [almost completely off-axis, best way to see any faint horizontal issues] and it still looks absolutely perfect.

PS I remember now that I cleaned the back surface, too... it's a retractable model... to prevent any dust/dirt transfer when (infrequently) rolled-up.

Did anyone else try it with the DA? What was the result?

And by the way what would I look for if I would buy DA in Germany? eek.gif

If you are concerned just use water but be forewarned it will not look good for a few days. My comments are for the 2.8 gain. the 2.4 will probably dry faster since there is a lot more room around microbeads for air flow.

I have the 2.8 as well. Will try to get my hands on some DA here in Germany (it is apparently called "Brennspiritus" ) and try it on a tiny part of the screen first.

Microfiber cloths, don't rub to hard, have projector on with all white image to help you see where you have and have not cleaned and for heaven sakes open the windows and DON'T smoke, the stuff is highly flammable!

Taking a while. Got the DA now. Only problem now is I am not able to find white microfiber cloth in the shops around here. Might order some.

Don't have to be white.. I have blue and white there should be no issue but you can test a colored cloth to make sure the it does not run.. Alcohol should not cause dyes to run.

Hi

Is methylated spirit the right thing to use in the Uk? If yes, I see the color of the liquid is either blue or purple.

Is it the same for DA? Just worried about staining screen.

Looks like methylated Sprites is the proper product but should be clear. I guess those manufactures have added die to prevent people from drinking it as water and dieing.

You can see a picture of a product with that name on the wiki site with no die and it look like a bottle of water! In the US it is typically packaged in metal cans you would expect solvents to come in and sold in the paint department next to the paint thinner, acetone and lacquer thinner.

Try and find some that is not died and if not possible, test the died product on a price of white printer paper. if the paper turns purple don't use it on the screen.

Projector is an old HC3000 720p DLP redface.gif that gets put on an accent table about 9' from a Projection King HP 2.8 4:3 portable that is mostly only opened to the 16:9 ratio. However, I have made a few modification to the screen that allows me to open to any ratio if I feel like it.
Unfortunately I don't have room for anything mounted on the wall or ceiling and this is all that will fit in the space I do have. at 16:9 it is only 65" diag. but if we are watching an old 4:3 DVD it will open to 72" Still tiny but it works for us in our living room.

Water wont hurt but will take some time to dry and may not remove the spot.
Denatured Alcohol on a clean soft cloth should remove the make without damage to the surface.. please read this complete thread if you have not.
