Modifying a Polk PSW 505

I saw on amazon that you can buy this sub for $200 now. Do you think that if the driver was replaced that it would make a pretty good sub. I just bought a klipsch rw -12d and I am not that satisfied. It hits hard, but I need something more for my music. Do you think this is a good idea, or should I try having a box built for two alpine type r car subwoofers.

1. What makes you think you need to replace the driver?
2. Why would you buy a sub that you think needs a driver replaced?

If you want to pay $200 for the box and the plate amp? Then add a couple hundred for a new driver, just call Elemental designs and buy a sub from them for $400 and save yourself the hassle

You're also going to be fighting unknown design-specific boost and filter values built into the amp that likely can't be defeated or modified. If you can come across a "for parts" type deal just for the enclosure then maybe, but you're still also going to end up with a pretty small ported box with a relatively high tune.

You're likely to spend an extra $100 on a new driver. That probably won't match the tuning of the box. Which will be too high for serious HT. And, like Stephen said, the amp is most likely modified to improve response.

If you want the sub, buy it. Here's a review to help you out

But instead of replacing the driver, if you want to do something then build a sub from scratch. There are a lot of helpful people around here that can work with you no matter your budget. You just have to be realistic in your expectations. You'd be hard pressed to build something that would equal the output of that sub for $200, but with a somewhat larger budget, you could easily outperform it.

I have the PSW505, and for 200 bucks it's a pretty good sub. It is on the boomy side, but I tried it by plugging the port (not completely) in the back and that helped a bit. Doesn't go crazy low, but it gets the job more than done.
