Which speakers would you buy?

A quick preface: I'm currently running Dalhquist QX8's up front, a Dalhquist QX60C center and 2 Dalhquist QX6's as rears powered by a Marantz SR6300 receiver and paired with a Paradigm PW2200 sub. 95% HT/5% music. I'm looking to upgrade my speakers, preferably to all matching bookshelves. I don't yet have a Blu-Ray or an HDMI compatible receiver... I've heard this could make a huge difference in the current sound of my system???

I want to make a decision right away on some speakers as the deals are awesome right now. Which of the speakers in my shortlist would you choose?...

KEF iQ3's
Polk RTiA3's
PSB Alpha C's - 5 centers (I can get a deal on 5 of these used for $375)
Energy RC-10's (currently $400/pr [CND prices])
M&K S125 5.1 system (I can get a deal on this used as well for $1,050 - would the sub in this replace my Paradigm PW2200 if I traded it in?)
SVS SBS-01's
Epos - ELS3's
Acculine A2r's

I demo'd some Paradigm Studio 20's and Polk LSi9's that sounded amazing, but at around $1k a pair they're out of my budget. Of the above speakers I've also heard the KEF's. The KEF's sounded pretty close to the Paradigm's and LSi9's actually, they were very impressive little speakers.

Would the Energy RC-10's be comparable, or possibly even better than the Studio 20's and LSi9's?

I'd also love to hear thoughts on the PSB and M&K deals. I've read some amazing things about both speakers, especially the M&K theater system.

Lastly, any opinions on the order of upgrading my system... I was going to do speakers first, then probably receiver and Blu-Ray at the same time. Or is there merit in doing receiver and Blu-Ray first?

Would love to hear some feedback - this forum rocks (no pun intended).

EDIT: Forgot to mention I don't like bright speakers very much (would prefer something uncolored and non-fatiguing) and I'd really like something that still sounds good when played at lower volumes.

It is hard to beat a M&K system for HT.

Personally, out of the ones you listed, I'd go with;
1- M&K S125
2- PSB Alpha C
3- ??? eh, take your pick of the rest

Those Ascends definitely seem like great speakers, but they're quite a bit more expensive than the others I'm looking at. Also, I've read some reviews that put the Epos ELS3 right there with them, or better them for less money.

These look good, too... designed by Vance Dickason: http://emotiva.com/erm1.shtm

And I keep hearing things about the speakers at http://www.thespeakercompany.com . Anyone have any experience with these? I'm not sure these would be an upgrade over what I already have though -- they're so inexpensive.

Anyone else?

Are you looking for the best deal? or the best price? or both?
IMO that M&K deal is going to be far superior to any of the others.
For the price, that PBS deal can't be beat by any of the others.
Of course, that's just my opinion,...I could be wrong

I guess I'm what you'd call a value shopper. I hunt for the best value in products, whether it's speakers, cars or houses. Value rules in my book. So if I can get excellent value on the lower end of the price spectrum, great, but I'm willing to pay a bit more for better value as well.

Hope that makes sense

A note on the M&K system; that system would have cost some $5k plus here in Canada a few years ago, and the reviews I've read put it above everything for under $4-5k for home theater applications. It does seem like smoking good value.

"We guarantee you, there is no movie theater on the face of this Earth that sounds as good as the M&K S-125 system driven by a good front end..."

The Emotiva speakers you listed are quite good. I actually own a set of the ERD-1's (the surrounds) and they are just flat out incredible. Can not be beat for the money. They will also be releasing the 6.2's which are a larger version of the ERM-1's.

I might eventually get some ERM-1s and the future UPA-2 to run a computer setup.

I dunno,... a set of M&K S125 for ~$1000 vs. a set of Emotiva ERM-1 for ~$1000,.... I think the M&K win hands down,... not even a contest. ????

Right now there is also a great deal on the ELT system at AV123:

Great price as well considering. Up to you

matter of opinion.....

i assume you have not heard the emotiva so dont be judgemental. But your probably right. Just for the size, i know the ERM-1's are an excellent HT and musical speaker designed by a famous man.

From a SQ position, i don't think any of your choices are going to better your Dalquists, a very capable speaker with a flat frequency response. For HT use, i'd go with the M&K system.

Make sure that Marantz receiver of yours will handle 4 Ohm loads. The Emotiva speakers are 4 Ohm. I don't know about the M&K you're looking at.

You are absolutely right,... I have not had a chance to hear the Emotiva's,... yet. I did not mean to come across as being judgmental, I was just expressing my opinion.

The 'future UPA-2' is here.

Looks to be one sweet deal. I just bought a UPA-7 and listen to it in 2 channel most of the time (music).

A note on the Dahlquists that mayhem13 brought up...

I've found the Dahlquists to be great musical speakers (especially paired with the Marantz), but for HT use they leave a lot to be desired compared to other speakers I've heard -- including the ones in my above list.

I wanted to post quick update since I've listed to more speakers, and ask for some advice to make a decision here...

So I've now listened to the Energy's (sort of, to the best of my ability in a box store) and the PSB Alpha C set as well as the M&K S125 5.1 set. I wasn't that impressed with the Energy's---damn listening environment was very bad---so that leads me to the PSB's and M&K's.

Both of these speakers were amazing, but I'd definitely give the edge to the M&K system for theater. The PSB's were great with theater and music. I was/am very impressed with both.

The M&K's are 4ohm speakers though, so if I was to go this way I'd need either another receiver (not in the budget right now at all), or possibly find a decent 5 channel amp for a good deal--perhaps even used.

What do you guys think of this latter idea? Will it work to power them combined with my Marantz SR6300?

This system cost $7k in Canada when it was new, and it's being offered to me for $1,050 with a few cosmetic blemishes.

The PSB's are the deal of the year though at $375 for all 5 C's, so I may end up going this route depending on my options to drive those M&K's.

I also listened to a Wharfdale system comprised of Diamond 9 series speakers with 9.6 towers up front. The audio shop has a deal going for $1k for the 5 speaker set, so I gave it a listen comparing it directly to the M&K. While this system sounded good, especially the mid-range, I exponentially liked the sound of the M&K system more. Hands down, no contest. Those Diamond towers in cherry wood finish were sure pretty for the price though.

Ya gotta be careful, beautiful speakers are like beautiful women, they look good, but you never know what you got until you seal the deal.

The Acculines would be considered bright but matched with a sub they are excellent for HT and the prices right now are outstanding. I doubt any speaker right now can match the value to price ratio. I have 3 A2's across the front a A1's for rears and older JBL 12in sub. You can get a 5.1 system for $733 plus shipping. A little more if you 5 A2's ($119 each).
