Volume on Onkyo 806 Doesn't Seem Loud?

Hello. I am new to the whole Home Theater scene, so please excuse my ignorance. I just purchased and setup my first receiver (Onkyo 806). For the time being, I am using some speakers from a Sony HTIB (SS-TS500) for the fr, ctr and side surround (5 speakers). I also purchased a polk sub(PSW110). I believe the sony speakers are rated at 50 watts/rms and the sub is 100 watts/rms.

I went through the suggested automated calibration and also changed the volume from Relative to Absolute. When watching a movie or tv, it seems like the audio from people speaking is much lower than everything else and I have to turn the volume up to 73 out of 99 for normal listening. I have also tried adjusting the speaker level calibration so that the default volume of these speakers is higher.

Is it common to need the volume dialed up so high? With my current setup, I am no more than 5 feet from the front and center speakers and about 3 feet from the side surround.

My plan is to eventually change my setup around so that I am sitting about 12 to 15 feet away from the front/center speakers and sub, and I am concerned the system will not be loud enough. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Do you know your speakers' sensitivity ratings?

I know what you mean. 73 for normal listening does sound high. There are many factors that will determine volume however. Normally with me, my cable box's sound is lower than say my Xbox or PS3. For nomal listening I usually have the volume on my 706 set at 50-55. I'll bring it up to 70 if I want it loud.

Have you tried raising the source level for the T.V.?

It could be that the speakers impedance is not a good match for the receiver that you are using.
Do you have an ohm meter?

When you say sensitivity, do you mean Ohm rating? The sony speakers are 6 ohms

I have not modified the source level for the tv. I'll check the manual to see what it says about that.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I have a multimeter that has an ohms setting, but I am not quite sure how to use it. What should I check?

Sensitivity will be stated as 88db/1 watt or something like that.

...and the higher the sensitivity rating, the 'louder' your speakers will play at a said power. (i.e. a speaker at 88dB (measured with 1 watt, 1 meter away) won't play as loudly as a speaker rated at 91dB (1w/1m).

As mentioned in another thread the only drawback to the TX line is it makes you go out and but better speakers.

People often complain about not being able to hear dialog in movies. Bump up your center channel level and see if that helps.
