You will get the delay every time the Moxi has to change the tuner regardless of whether you choose from the guide, entering the channel number, or using the up/down channel button. The only time you won't see the delay is if one of the tuners on the Moxi happens to already be on the channel you are switching to on the Mate.

Thanks bekm, I'm trying to decide between the 3-tuner and a mate vs two 2-tuners and it is driving me crazy!

There is a brief delay when it starts streaming any channel. Any method of selecting a channel or switching channels will have this delay.

For the way I watch TV this hasn't been a problem. When I am looking for something to watch on live TV I use the built in program guide. The guide is quite responsive. Most of my TV watching is recorded programs. You also see a brief delay at the start of recorded program playback.

The delay you get for rewind, fast forward and skip are much shorter than the initial delay to start a program but you can tell you are at a Mate and not the main Moxi when you use these functions.

I would push for the 3-tuner with 1 moxi mate since there is more memory. When Moxi gets more features, you might need that additional memory for a quicker response.

Most of what I will be watching on the Mate would be multiple live sports games, so I'm just worried the delay would become an issue when flipping back and forth.

One thing to keep in mind is the responsiveness of the menus, etc. of both the Moxi and the Mate. For some reason, the Mate is quite a bit more responsive than the Moxi when navigating the menus (with the exception of the occassional delay with the guide on the Mate).

The reason I bring this up is becaues I would assume the best way to switch between multiple live sports games is to have them all being recorded and switch between the recorded programs (albiet slightly delayed). I haven't actually tested it, but I would assume based on my experience that the time it takes to press the 'recorded programs' button, select the program, click watch, and have the program start playing would be about the same between the Moxi and Mate.

Also, since the Moxi's tuners would already be set to the channels, the delay to the Mate is not very bad. It's only when the Moxi has to change the tuner's channel.

FYI

I got it last night.

I hate to disagree too much with other posters, but to me the answer is very clear. If you want to switch between two sporting events, the Mate will only disappoint because of the delay. I also find that when I do too much switching too fast, the Mate locks up for as many as 30 seconds.

I am trying to trade in a Mate for another 2 tuner model. I am very unhappy with the Mates. I can live with one on my office TV, but not on the one my wife watches in the kitchen.

The 3-tuner DVRs are now available on Moxi's website without the bundle...
I am thinking about buying another Moxi to go with my 3 tuner Moxi and 3 Moxi Mates.

What I am hoping is that the reason Moxi hasn't allowed recording on Moxi Mates is that they are working on some kind of distributed recording system. A system that would schedule recordings on whatever DVR has available tuners and drive space.

That would make the decision to buy another DVR easy. Right now I am thinking of doing it because I am over their supported limit for number of Mates connected to one system but I don't really want to have the hassle of scheduling programs across two Moxis.

Maybe if Moxiguy stops by again he can put in a word with the developers!

Well, Tivo Premiere has been officially announced...

and it was less than what most expected....

no dlna, no live streaming, 2 tuners...

in other words, it sucks...

It confirms selling my Tivo and buying a moxi bundle was one of the best things I did in terms of electronic purchases in a while...

If you are on the fence with Tivo or Moxi.. might as well place the order for Moxi now.

I was waiting for the Tivo announcement to make my decision between whatever they were going to announce or the Moxi. It looks like the Moxi wins based on what I have read so far.

Not a great Tivo update but at least they updated the interface.

There are a couple of things which Moxi could borrow in this upgrade. The 1TB storage for $500 is good and the slider keyboard is pretty slick.

No reasons to regret buying a Moxi however.

Once you add in $399.00 for Tivo lifetime service the 3 tuner Moxi is cheaper even after you add in another TB of storage and an analog tuner. A Moxi expanded like that will have 1.5 TB of storage, four tuners, better multi room and still be less expensive.

Right. Be prepared for an influx of new Moxi users on this thread since Moxi is seems to be the better option now.

It should more fun and active on this thread.

Moxi doesn't have Netflix in HD, which is something I'd miss

Hopefully they integrate a native HD netflix client.

That feature along with recording from the Mates are really the only features that I feel like I'm missing right now.

I have blu ray players that can do HD netflix in my two main viewing rooms but eventually I would like to take out the blu ray players and stream all movies from my network server.

Another good suggestion. We are aware of the desire for this, stay tuned.

I have a feeling this will be addressed in a software update in the future.....

I'm not talking about pricing, I talking about upping the hardware specs as standard. Especially for the three tuner. Adding a larger capacity drive would make it look far more impressive to those who can't use the extra tuner.

I just bounced over to the Tivo Community forum and a few users have brought up Moxi.

Of course it doesn't solve the one thing that Tivo users really hate - tuning adapters. It works better on Moxi (no PQ issues) but it's still a flaky device. Mine went out of sync today after the software update reboot but it corrected itself later. The TA seems to have been less problematic in the past couple of weeks. Hard to say why that is. It might just be a lull in TWC's meddling schedule.

Wow, way to fail TiVo. And after not checking in for a few days, I notice the 3-tuner is now available solo. I'm about to switch for sure.

Besides Netflix are there any other desirable media providers that will stream HD? I know that Vudu just changed their model away from the set top box. (Would Arris attempt to negotiate with Vudu for the Moxi?) Is there a good reference out there comparing the HD PQ from streamed content providers? What one man's HD, in reality actually is mid-def or worse yet, just low-def.

Yup. I read that. What comes next. Wal-Mart, the movie production company? Any film so long as its PG? I hear their studio will be in Guangdong.

How much longer will moxi be in business. before tivo sues them? since tivo has almost all the patent now for the dvr.

Not sure but since Tivo Premiere sucked, they might need to sue more DVR makers to keep their own company afloat. Tivo strategy seems to be to survive by suing others ala Dish Network and stifling innovation.

Beside, did you know Moxi is owned by Arris? I think Arris had revenues over a billion dollars last year. I think market cap of 1.4 billion dollars. Not sure what that means.. I will let you decide.

There are some patents on the Moxi side as well.

I too was watching the TIVO announcement to see what was coming. It really looks like what TIVO is becoming is a search machine. They have not shown the new user guide, which to me is the most important part of the interface. Why aren't they showing it? I suspect that it will be nowhere as cool as the moxi's. The new GUI looks like the beta search engine that was already available, with a few tweaks.
