"Altered State Police..meow"
Captain O'Hagen (Brian Cox) tries in vain to control the imaginations and hormones of his bumbling team of five Vermont Highway Patrolmen. But when the opportunity to solve a real crime rolls their way, the formerly inept Super Troopers pounce into action to become highway heroes.
Always looking for action, five over-enthusiastic, but under-stimulated Vermont State Troopers raise hell on the highway, keeping motorists anxiously looking in their rear view mirrors. Between an ongoing feud with the local cops over whose you-know-what is bigger and the state government wanting to shut them down, the Super Troopers find themselves patrolling the boundaries of good taste as they hilariously and unwittingly skid towards solving the crime of their lives.
I think what makes this movie fun for me is that it takes everything that I know to be factual about what goes on both behind the scenes and in front while on the road and turns it inside out. It elevates any remote similarities to the point of absurdity and it does so in good fashion. By that I mean that it never purports to be anything close to genuine which is why it could never be construed as seemingly degrading to police officers or state troopers. Certain aspects such as the comradery, the practical joking, and to some extent the competitive elements that can exist between agencies rings true however not all of them exist at such a level. I absolutely love the opening scene with the three potheads in the car followed by the crazy chase that ends at the bar. There are some funny moments in Super Troopers and depending on who you talk to everyone’s favorite might be different. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t brilliantly written comedy, but its wonderful mindless humor which is something everyone can appreciate from time to time.

Super Troopers comes to Blu-ray Disc featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 30 mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.3 mbps.
This video presentation comes framed in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio that seems perfect matched with the source material. It offers a fair level of high definition detail that at times looks very good. Close ups generally offer plenty of fine rendering so that it is easy to make out the subtle complexional structure in the faces of the actors as well as the texture of clothing and objects within the frame. Resolute clarity and sharpness is inconsistent though and can go from looking very good to just average. The DVD suffers from edge enhancement and it is present here as well but to a lesser degree. Halos around objects in certain scenes are noticeable. It isn’t detectable in every instance, nor wood I describe it as image degrading, but its presence is worth noting. Colors appear natural with sufficient saturation and a satisfying palette. Flesh tones look great with lifelike quality and supple texture. Black levels and shadow detail are above average. The sequences filmed at night don’t offer deep defining blacks or three dimensional depth however they have ample dynamic range with respectable image penetration. The soundtrack delivers clear dialogue and punchy dynamics that a wrapped in a presentation that is essentially front channel oriented. Surround activity is limited to light ambience and occasional discrete sounds that rarely feel immersive. This film doesn’t necessitate an overly active surround mix. I found that this was more than adequate and sounded fine.

Super Troopers is a rather silly, slightly over ambitious comedy that in spite itself, is lots of fun. It has quite a following and many have been looking forward to the chance to own it on Blu-ray Disc. It’s high definition presentation isn’t spectacular but it does offer a clear upgrade over the previous standard DVD release and includes all of its bonus content as well as adding a Blu-ray exclusive. Recommended for fans.
