Need advice re mounting projector in difficult room

I'm in the (early) stages of designing a front-projection video setup for my family room. However, I have a cathedral ceiling (peak at 11.5 ft), and virtually NO rear wall on which to mount the projector (fam room backs up into kitchen). My wife isn't keen on having a front projector permanently hanging down from the ceiling in the middle of the room (behind the fan), so I was thinking I could mount it on a drop-down swing arm from the small upper wall at the rear of our family room (see pic, "X" on small wall). Of note, the rear upper wall is ~18 ft from where the screen will be, so I need a mount that brings it both down and forward a bit, to clear the fan, and give better placement for the proposed ~7 ft screen height (sketched in front pic). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a swing-arm type mount. If I just mount it on a shelf on that small wall, that would put it ~10 ft high, which I think would require too much keystone adjustment. Thought I'd pick your collective brains for other suggestions. Of note, I'm having custom bookcases built around my front console cabinet, and the top cross-piece will have a hidden recess for the drop-down screen (to hang in front of my 52" HDTV).

Drats, looks like it won't be worth the effort after all. I'd only have 70" max width for the screen, possibly only 68" (due to the bookshelves), which only allows me ~78" diag screen with 16:9 aspect ratio. Wish I'd looked at those screen calculators first!

You know you could build a pocket in the ceiling above the kitchen and have the projector shining out that wall so it is basically out of sight.

A projector like the New Panasonic would have the right throw range and lens shift to pull it off.

But dude a 68 inch screen? what were you thinking?

I have a friend with a beautiful home with very high ceilings and his ceiling mounted projector is hardly noticed by anyone entering the room and when his giant screen lights up everyone just goes WOW!!

In the X spot in second photo in front of the kitchen why can't you attach a simple wall projector mount? Our projector sits on a shelf and it much more visible that the space shown in your pictures and, take my word, true Cinema in the Home it!

So far as your screen size you simply need, IMO and no offense intended, review and rethink your priorities. You have plenty of wall space to allow for a giant screen. Again, take my word that you won't get a lot of WOW from some static cabinets sitting there but you and your family and friends will get a ton of WOW and pleasure from Theater in the Home if you (God, I hate this expression) start thinking out of the box your thoughts have put you in.

You have a nice, big and grand room that seems perfect for viewing and without the need to make it a "dedicated" theater - you simply won't be sorry. Pull down screens are practically invisible when retracted - imagine selling your spouse on a giant gray fixed wall screen like the one I screwed into our living area wall almost two years ago - even after that amount of time I still sit in awe of the near Commercial Theater experience we have that no television on the market today can deliver.

Get creative and good luck!!!

I think Sleepy has pulled the trigger on his custom wall cabinets and is now stuck with the ramifications of that decision

I would say just do a retractable screen and place it on your wall with a spacer to clear your existing tv. Then build a cornice around the screen that way it not noticeable when not in use. When it's being used your eyes will be glued to the screen so the cornice wont have any effects on your viewing.
